[Meakan Onsen in Ashoro] Day Trip Bath and Lake Onneto Can Be Enjoyed

August 31st, 2014

Meakan Onsen

Meakan Onsen (雌阿寒温泉) is a hot spring place in Ashoro town located in the northwestern part of Kushiro city, and is well-knonw as a secter onsen in a mountain at around 720 m above sea level in Akan Mashu National Park (阿寒摩周国立公園). Only Nonaka Onsen (野中温泉), Nonaka Onsen Annex Building (野中温泉別館), Kiefuku (景福), a public parking lot and a public restroom are built at an entrance of Lake Onneto (オンネトー). A lot of hikers come to go up Mt. Meakandake (雌阿寒岳) or Mt. Akanfuji (阿寒富士), and here is popular for the Lake Oneneto and rare type of hot springs. The distance is around 50 km away from the center of the Ashoro, and the distance is around 20 km away from Akako Onsen Resort (阿寒湖温泉街), so a convenience store is not built. But Onneto-Chaya (オンネトー茶屋) is a little away from here, and tourists can have a lunch there.

The Meakan Onsen have been well-known as a hot spring gushing place since Ainu period. It is the origin of the Meakan Onsen that Mr. Masujiro Nonaka (野中増次郎) built an onsen hut in 1914. The Meakan Onsen passed a rigorous screening in 1973, and has been appointed by Minister for the Environment, and is one of 15 nation insurance hot spring resorts in Hokkaido. There are the Mt. Meakandake, the Mt. Akanfuji, the Lake Onento, Onneto Observation Deck (オンネトー展望デッキ), Onneto Hot Falls (オンネトー湯の滝), Onneto Campsite (オンネトー野営場), Onneto Observatory (オンネトー展望台) and Rawanbuki Field (ラワンブキ観賞ほ場) around here, and trails are built, too. As for the Lake Onento, Cherry blossoms can be enjoyed in a spring, fresh green can be enjoyed in a summer, fall foliage can be enjoyed in an autumn, especially, the lake is famous as one of best places to see the fall foliage in Hokkaido.

Lake Onneto

Lake Onneto (オンネトー) is a dammed lake born by an eruption of Mt. Meakandake (雌阿寒岳) in Ashoro town located in the southwestern of Lake Akan (阿寒湖). The perimeter of the lake is about 4 km. The Lake Onneto is one of the three major secret lakes together with Lake Ocotanpe (オコタンペ湖), Lake Shinonome (東雲湖) in Hokkaido. Because colors of water look azure blue and emerald green depending on seasons, places, directions of wind and weather, it is called "Goshikinuma (五色沼 * Marshes with 5 Colors)" and is said that the colors of the water is the most beautiful in Hokkaido. It seems to look beautiful if weather in particular is bad. The water turning into 5 colors is acid with ph 6, and fishes can not inhabit, but Uchida Crawfish (内田ザリガニ) and Yezo Salamander (エゾサンショウウオ) inhabit. Creatures seem to be able to adapt to harsh environment. Wooden paths are built around the Lake Onneto and tourists can make a round trip for about 60 minutes. In an autumn, a lot of visitors come to see fall foliage. There is the lake on the foot of Mt. Meakandake and are Onneto Observation Deck (オンネトー展望デッキ), Onneto Hot Falls (オンネトー湯の滝), Onneto Campsite (オンネトー野営場), Onneto Observatory (オンネトー展望台) and Meakan Onsen (雌阿寒温泉) near the Lake Onneto. Yama-no-Yado Nonaka Onsen Annex Building

Nonaka Onsen is a long-established hot spring ryokan, and has opened a business since 1914. They have a main building, former youth hostel, and an annex building. It is well-known that Mr. Shozo Nonaka (野中正造), World's Oldest Man, lives, too. It could probably say long living hot springs because he says "thanks to Onsen, I live long". High quality hot springs have a good reputation for onsen experts, too. An entrance fee to the bath facility is JPY 350. A building of the annex building is larger than the main building, and visitors can stay only at the annex currently. By the way, their cats and a dog are cute, too.

There are 1 open-air bath and 1 indoor bath at a public bathroom. The bathroom is not so large, and its walls, floor and bathtub are made of woods, so those remind me of historical onsen in Honshu. In addition, the floor is slippery. The wooden indoor bath is the size that about 10 people can take a bath, and uses 100% natural free flowing hot springs, and its yielding is large, so bathers can enjoy the overflowing hot springs. Those have slightly thickened touch. Showers and faucets are not provided, so please wash your body with pouring hot water on yourself with a wash basin before entering the bathtub. By the way, Do not take a long bath to prevent from hydrogen sulfide toxication at the bathroom.

The open-air baths for men or women are different. I know only the open-air bath for men. The open-air bath surrounded by rocks is the size that about 4 poeple can take a bath. I think that the bathers can feel a sense of openness without a roof. Fresh green can be enjoyed in a summer, Fall foliage can be enjoyed in an autumn, and snow can be enjoyed in a winter while taking a bath. In addition, stary sky seems to be beautiful in the evening.

The hot springs are sulfur and calcium and sodium chloride sulfate spring, and are milky white and have harsh taste and hydrogen sulfide odor, and are drinkable. A drinking hot spring facility is provided. It tasted the harsh taste like a medicine when I drinked it. It seems to be effective for Chronic digestive diseases, Chronic constipation, Diabetes, Gout, Chronic gallbladder flame, Cholelithiasis, Obesity disease. But the bathers might not drink the hot springs very much because a lot of the sulfur seem to dissolve their stomaches. The sum total of the hot spring ingredients are 4.022 g/kg. The meta-silicic acid content is 236.7 mg/kg. It is said that the hot springs including the meta-silicic acid with over 200 mg/kg is effective for beautiful skin. Shampoos and body soaps are not provided at the bathroom. Because a restroom is not installed at a dressing room, you should get a wash beforehand at the restroom along a corridor.

[Shut Down] Onneto Onsen Keifuku

Keifuku is a small-sized hot spring ryokan founded in 1987. An entrance fee to a bath facility is JPY 300. A lot of hikers stay here, so a staying is possible. They close a business from December to April. Unfortunately, they have closed a business since 2015.

They have 4 baths on the 1st basement floor in total. Each gender segregated public bathrooms have a bathroom with 1 indoor bath and a bathroom with 1 open-air bath, and the bathrooms are away from each other, so bathers must move from each bathrooms in wearing their clothes. By the way, a wash place is provided only at the bathrrom with the indoor bath, so the bathers should take a bath there first.

Indoor Bath

The bathrrom with the indoor bath is small but cozy. Wooden bathroom is unusual bathroom in Hokkaido. The indoor bath surrounded by rocks is the size that about 3 people can take a bath. Gravels spread over the bottom of the bath, and 100% natural fresh hot springs are gushing out from the bottom. The bathtub connected directly with the hot spring source is very rare bathtub in Japane. In addition, the clear hot springs like a pond is very beautiful. A shower is not installed at the bathroom, so you must pour the hot springs on yourself with a wash basin to rinse off your surface dirt and sweat before entering the bath.

As for the open-air bath, the bath surrounded by rocks is the size that about 10 people can take a bath. It formerly noted for a large mixed bathing open-air bath, but a partition divides the open-air bath into the open-air baths for men or women at present. Except the partition, there is not an obstruction in my view, so the bathers can enjoy a sense of openness very much. In addition, emerald green hot springs are very beautiful. Each hot springs are the same types, but I am surprised at the difference of colors. When the hot springs are oxidized on exposure to air, those seem to turn into the color. Besides, rocks around the bath are turned into white color by the hot spring ingredients. A large quantity of the hot springs have flowed to an outlet, so the bathers can enjoy the free-flowing hot springs.

The hot springs are sulfur and magnesium and calcium and sodium chloride sulfate spring, and are clear and colorless and have bitter taste and a little sulfur smell, and seem to be drinkable. It tasted like a bitter medicine when I drank the hot springs that gushed out from a pipe with my hands. But the bathers might not drink the hot springs very much because a lot of the sulfur seem to dissolve their stomaches. The sum total of the hot spring ingredients are 3.798 g/kg. The meta-silicic acid content is 233.8 mg/kg. It is said that the hot springs including the meta-silicic acid with over 200 mg/kg is effective for beautiful skin. Shampoos and body soaps are not provided at the bathroom, so the bathers must bring those. Because there are not restrooms at both dressing rooms, you should get a wash beforehand at the restroom at a corridor.
