Maruyama

Maruyama (円山) is a mountain at an altitude of 226 m in the westrn part of Chuo Ward, Sapporo city, and used to be called "Mt. Moiwa (モイワ山)". It means "A small mountain" in Ainu language. Mr. Michitoshi Iwamura (岩村通俊), a chief of Hokkaido Development Commission, named this neighborhood as Maruyama Village after Maruyama in Kyoto in 1872, and the mountain has been called "Mt. Maruyama" before people knows it. Around the foot of the Mt. Mauyama is called "Maruyama Park" at present, and it is a place of recreation and relaxation for Sapporo citizen. The large area is about 70 ha, and Hokkaido-jingu Shrine (北海道神宮), Maruyama Athletic Field (円山総合運動場) and Maruyama Zoo (円山動物園) are built on the site, and Maruyama Virgin Forest (円山原始林) grows, too, and this park has rich nature. It is well-known for a place famous for cherry blossoms and fall foliage, and a lot of tourists come. In addition, the Mt. Maruyama can be hiked, too, and trails are built for about 3 km in total length, and the time it takes to hike the mountain is around 1 hour.

Around the Maruyama is well-known as an affluent neighborhood in the Sappro, and a lot of classy restaurants are built there. Popular restaurants such as Sushi Miyagawa (すし宮川), Sushisai Wakichi (鮨菜 和喜智), Restaurant Moliere (レストラン モリエール), Sushizen Head Office (すし善 本店) and Auberge de Lill Sapporo (オーベルジュ・ド・リル サッポロ) are near here. In addition, around the Maruyama is well-known as a hop place by Sapporo people, cafes and variety goods shops open along the back approach to the Hokkaido-jingu Shrine, and its atmosphere is like Aoyama or Omotesando in Tokyo. When I came here with my acquaintance from Tokyo, and I said so, he said "I do not think so". People seem to feel differently. By the way, I ate sweets at Sally's Cup Cake and Maruyama Pancake, and those were tasty.

Maruyama Pancake

Maruyama Pancake (円山ぱんけーき) is a store specializing in pancake in Chuo ward, Sapporo city. I heard from my niece that pancakes were tasty, so I visited here. They had parking lots for 4 cars, and 2 cars had been already filled up when I arrived around 10:30. Because 4 cars were filled up at 10:40, it was a correct answer for visiting here early. For opening a business at 11:00, I begun to line up at 10:50. Preceding visitors were 2 groups. Around 10 people lined up at opening time. I heard a high reputation, the store was really popular. Maruyama Zoo

Maruyama Zoo (円山動物園) is one of only 4 zoos in Hokkaido. 177 kinds of 924 animals are bred in February 28, 2014. There are 20 animal houses in the Maruyama Zoo, and it takes one hour 30 minutes even if tourists look around roughly. I thought that the zoo for children was very interesting. At the zoo for children, animals such as sheeps or chickens, ducks are bred, and tourists can observe those closely. It is very nice that the tourists are able to come in contact with animals.
