May 21st, 2014

Neighborhood of Lake Shikotsu

Lake Shikotsu (支笏湖) in Chitose city is the second largest caldera lake in Japan and was born 40,000 years ago. The perimeter of the lake is abhout 40 km, and the average depth is 265 m and has the second deepest in Japan. The Lake Shikotsu is an unfrozen lake in the northernmost of Japan, and it does not freeze even in a winter. It is famous that water of the lake is clear, too. It has transparency like Lake Mashu and Lake Baikal. Because the lake is close to New Chitose Airport, it is a popular sightseeing spot that many tourists visit.

Mt. Tarumae with 1,041 m in height is an active volcano in the northwestern part of Tomakomai city and is near Lake Shikotsu. Volcanic activity seemed to begin about 9,000 years ago. There is Triplex Lava Domes called Tarumae Dome on the mountaintop, and it was born when it erupted in 1909. The Triplex Lava Domes are very rare in the world and have designed as the Hokkaido Natural Monument. The climbing season is from late May to mid November. Marukoma Onsen Ryokan is a long-established hot-spring hotel in the northern side of Lake Shikotsu and was founded in 1915. There is a building near New Chitose Airport, so a lot of tourists come. Full of many visitors were crowded when I visited. There are 2 bathhouses. The former has only open-air bath. As for the latter, there are 1 open-air bath and 3 indoor baths that are different in temperature. Though those are same types of hot springs, the hot springs have 2 types of colors, clear-colorless and clouds-reddish brown. Why? I wonder about that. Article is this
