[Lake Shikotsu in Chitose] Tourist Attractions, Onsen and Rich Nature Can Be enjoyed in Beautiful Lake

Lake Shikotsu

Lake Shikotsu (支笏湖) in Chitose city is the 2nd largest caldera lake after Lake Kussharo in Japan, and was born by large-scale eruptions 40,000 years ago. In Shikotsu-Toya National Park, the perimeter of the lake is about 40 km, and the maximum depth is 360 m, and is the 2nd deepest lake after Lake Tazawa in Akita prefecture in Japan. It is said that the Lake Shikotsu is an unfrozen lake in the northernmost of Japan, but it sometimes is frozen actually. It is famous for clear water of the lake, too, and has transparency as well as Lake Mashu and Lake Baikal. Because the lake is close to New Chitose Airport, Sapporo city and Tomakomai city, it is a popular tourist attraction that a lot of tourists visit. Around the Lake Shikotsu, there are Shikotsuko Onsen Resort (支笏湖温泉街), Marukoma Onsen (丸駒温泉), Former Poropinai Camping Ground (ポロピナイ元キャンプ場), Bifue Camping Ground (美笛キャンプ場), Okotan Camping Ground (オコタン野営場), Lake Okotanpe (オコタンペ湖), Morappu Camping Ground (モラップキャンプ場), Mt Eniwadake (恵庭岳), Mt. Fushidake (風不死岳), Mt. Tarumae (樽前山) and Mt. Monbetsudake (紋別岳).

The Shikotsu means "Large valley" in Ainu language, and was named because of the source of Chitose River. The Lake Shikotsu is well-known for farm-raised Kokanee (ヒメマス), and it is a noted product eaten at various restaurants in the Shikotsuko Onsen Resort. The Kokanee season opens from June to August, and popular fishing can be ejoyed if you pay recreational fishing fee. In the Lake Shikotsu, something can be enjoyed in all seasons. Cherry blossoms can be enjoyed in a spring, Fresh green, hiking, the fishing, camping, a canoe, a kayak, diving, a bicycle, a boat and a sightseeing boat can be enjoyed in a summer, Fall foliage can be enjoyed in an autumn, and a snow scenery can be enjoyed in a winter.

As for events, Chitose Lake Shikotsu Ice Festival (支笏湖氷濤まつり) is held from late January to mid February, Opening Ceremony (支笏湖湖水開き) is held in mid April, Lake Shikotsu Festival (支笏湖湖水まつり) is held in late July, and Fall Foliage Festival (支笏湖紅葉まつり) is held in early October. In addition, the lake is a shooting place for Japanese movie "Otoko wa Tsurai yo (男はつらいよ)" that Mr. Kiyoshi Atsumi (渥美清) played as Torajiro Kuruma (車寅次郎), and a song "Flowering in Water, Go to Lake Shikotsu (水に咲く花・支笏湖へ)" sung by Ms Kaori Mizumori (水森かおり), a Japanese enka singer, uses here as a motif. By the way, a guided tour of Moss Cave closed by cliff collapse is reheld in 2018, and a blocked road to the Lake Okotanpe, one of secret lakes together with Lake Onneto and Lake Shinonome in Hokkaido, is removed in 2018, too. In addition, a tour of Moss Corridor (苔の回廊) is popular, too.

Move of "Flowering in Water, Go to Lake Shikotsu"

A parking lot in the center of the Shikotsuko Onsen is charged from April to November. Parking fee is JPY 410. The parking lot in front of Kyukamura Shikotsu on a hill is free of charge. By the way, nonstop buses do not run. But pick-up service bus "Meito Liner (名湯ライナー)" for hotel guests run between Sapporo and the Shikotsuko Onsen from November to April. * You need to make a reservation in advance.

Shikotsuko Onsen (支笏湖温泉) is a hot-spring resort surrounded by forests and the lake in the east side of Lake Shikotsu (支笏湖) located in the western part of Chitose city. It succeeded in drilling hot springs in 1974, and is close to New Chitose Airport, Sapporo and Tomakomai, and 0.95 million people visit here annually. It features a few large buildings due to building restrictions. The hot-spring resort is not large, and there are 7 accommodations, a ferry port, Shikotsuko Visitor Center (支笏湖ビジターセンター), restaurants and souvenir shops. Sweets Shop Patissier Labo (スイーツショップ パティシエ・ラボ), Healthy Buffet Amamu (ヘルシービュッフェ アマム), Shokujidokoro Kotobuki (食事処 寿), Shikotsuko Daiichihotel Suizantei Taian (支笏湖第一寶亭留 翠山亭 苔庵) and azzurro (アズーロ) are popular in particular. Marukoma Onsen (丸駒温泉) is a hot spring place surrounded by forests and the lake at the foot of Mt. Eniwadake (恵庭岳) in the east side of Lake Shikotsu (支笏湖) located in the western part of Chitose city, and is famous for easy access to a secret onsen close to New Chitose Airport, Sapporo and Tomakomai. Except Marukoma Onsen Ryokan, Unfortunately, restraunts, cafes, cafes, souvenir shops and convenience stores are not built. Article is here

The Shikotsuko Onsen Resort is a sightseein base for the Lake Shikotsu. At the Shikotsuko Visitor Center, they offer hiking information or road informaion, and give an explanation about nature of the lake using pictures and movies. Of course, a restroom is built, too. A boarding point is built on the shore, and an underwater sightseeing boat is operated to observe the underwater. A trail named "Shikotsuko Onsen Course" is set to take a walk from the Shikotsuko Onsen Resort to the Kyukamura Shikotsuko. Red Yamasen Rail Bridge (山線鉄橋) and the Blue Chitose River are cool.

Poropinai

Poropinai is a former camping ground in the north side of the Lake Shikotsu, and is called "Poropinai Park (ポロピナイ園地)", Shikotsuko Sightseeing Center (支笏湖観光センター) is built. It opens from late April to late October. Ageimo (あげいも * deep fried boiled potato) is popular. A conbination of the Mt. Fushidake, the Mt. Tarumae and the lake can be seen here, and it is one of beautiful views in the Lake Shikotsu. After going up a little, Shikotsuko Lookout (支笏湖展望台) is built to see the lake along National Route 453. But a view is not good because of obstructing people's view by branches of trees. A public restroom is built. Although the camping ground was took away, people can park to sleep in their cars. Admission free. A parking lot is free of charge.

Morappu Camping Ground

Morappu Camping Ground is in the southeastern side of the Lake Shikotsu. Mt. Morappu (モラップ山) separates here from the Shikotsuko Onsen Resort. A conbination of the Mt. Eniwadake and the lake can be seen. Visitors can enjoy nature fully. This place is popular for beautiful views and pitching a tent on sandy beach of the lake. There are facilities such as an administration house, a restroom, a boat pier, a restraunt and a shop. Admission is charged. A parking lot is free of charge.

Mt. Tarumae

Mt. Tarumae (樽前山) is an active volcano at an altitude of 1,041 m in the northwestern part of Tomakomai city, and is well-known as a symbol of the Tomakomai. In Shikotsu-Toya National Park, the mountain adjoins Mt. Fushidake in the southwestern part of Lake Shikotsu, and is one of 3 major mountain around the Lake Shikotsu together with the Mt. Fushidake and Mt. Eniwadake. Volcanic activity has begined since about 9,000 years ago, and a lave dome called Tarumae Lave Dome (樽前ドーム) was born on the mountaintop when it erupted in 1909. The lave dome has been designed as the Hokkaido Natural Monument since 1967 because of new lave dome. The mountain is well-known for a triple volcano together with Mt. Hakone and Mt. The Lake Shikotsu has clear water lake, so some activities are served to enjoy the water lake, for example, Canoe, Kayak, Snorkelling, Diving, Stand Up Paddleboard and Ice Walk. Except those, the guided tour of the Moss Corridor is held, too, and a bicycle is rented for JPY 500 per a day at the Shikotsuko Visitor Center.
