The Kushiro became incorporated with Akan town (阿寒) and Onbetsu (音別) in 2005, and has became the 3rd largest city by area in the Hokkaido. In Japan, it is the 7th latgest city by the area. The Kushiro is also well-known as a tourist city with rich nature, and has 2 very famous national parks, Kushiro-Shitsugen wetland (釧路湿原), the largest wetland in the Japan, and Lake Akan (阿寒湖) consisted by primeval forests and lava. As for a climate, it is chilly even in a summer because a sea breeze blows from the Pacific Ocean. In the summer, temperature rarely exceeds 20 degrees, and if temperature exceeds 20 degrees over one week, it is an unusual hot summer. Because the Kushiro has a lot of foggy days in the summer, it is called foggy town, too. I used to live in the Kushiro for 4 years, thick fog (ジリ) often came down, and it was real problem fog for natural curly hair. On the other hand, there is little snow in a winter, but the temperature is below the freezing point. The surface of a road freezes, and an attention is necessary because people are easy to slip and fall down. Thanks to this climate, skating is popular. The Kushiro produces a lot of the skating and ice hockey players.

The Nusamai Bridge is famous as a scenery with Flower Clock near a rotary intersection, and is well-known for four seasons women statues on the bridge. The 4 statues of four seasons were produced by Mr. Yasutake Funakoshi (舟越保武), Mr. Tadayoshi Sato (佐藤忠良), Mr. Yoshitatsu Yanagihara (柳原義達) and Mr. Shin Hongo (本郷新), and each statues express a spring, a summer, a autumn and a winter. It is said that the bridge is one of three major bridges in Hokkaido together with Toyohira bridge (豊平橋) in Sapporo and Asahi bridge (旭橋) in Asahikawa. The bridge become popular the sunset spot recently.

Sekineppu Lookout Open Space

Sekineppu Lookout Open Space (セキネップ展望広場) is a scenic place in Kushiro town located in the eastern part of Kushiro city, and is also located Senboushi that is famous as a producing center for oysters between the Kushiro city and Akkeshi town. The Sekineppu means "A mountain with a few trees, and a place that stones fall" in Ainu language. The Sekineppu Lookout Open Space is built along Hokkaido Road 142 called "Northern Pacific Ocean Seaside Line (北太平洋シーサイドライン)", and the road is not often crowded with cars, so I think that drivers can enjoy driving while seeing a good scenery. A few visitors come here, so here is a little-known tourist spot. Only a parking lot and a temporary restroom are built at the site. Admission free. The parking lot is free of charge.
