Kushiro (釧路) that about 170,000 people live is the 5th largest fisheries city in Hokkaido, and is one of regional hub cities of the Eastern Hokkaido area. The Kushiro became incorporated with Akan town (阿寒) and Onbetsu (音別) in 2005, and has became the 3rd largest city by area in the Hokkaido. In Japan, it is the 7th latgest city by the area. The Kushiro is also well-known as a tourist city with rich nature, and has 2 very famous national parks, Kushiro-Shitsugen wetland (釧路湿原), the largest wetland in the Japan, and Lake Akan (阿寒湖) consisted by primeval forests and lava. In addition, the beautiful sunset can be seen, too, and the Kushiro is one of the three great places to see the beautiful setting sun in the world together with Manila in Philippines and Bali in Indonesia.
As for a climate, it is chilly even in a summer because a sea breeze blows from the Pacific Ocean. In the summer, temperature rarely exceeds 20 degrees, and if temperature exceeds 20 degrees over one week, it is an unusual hot summer. Because the Kushiro has a lot of foggy days in the summer, it is called foggy town, too. I used to live in the Kushiro for 4 years, thick fog (ジリ) often came down, and it was real problem fog for natural curly hair. On the other hand, there is little snow in a winter, but the temperature is below the freezing point. The surface of a road freezes, and an attention is necessary because people are easy to slip and fall down. Thanks to this climate, skating is popular. The Kushiro produces a lot of the skating and ice hockey players.
The Kushiro is one of the largest fishing bases landing cod, saury or cuttlefish in the Japan, and accounts for 13 % fish haul in the Japan, and tasty seafood are famous. Unique restaurants such as Shakebanya (鮭番屋), Katte-don (勝手丼 * seafood rice bowl) in Washo market (和商市場), a store specializing in whelk (つぶ貝専門店) and Japanese-style barbecue (Robata (炉端) * seafood cooked on a grill in front of customers) open their businesses. In addition, it is well-known as a birthplace of a local sprciality dish "Hokkaido-style Deep-fried Chicken (ザンギ)", and only dishes of the Kushiro such as Kushiro Ramen, Spaghetti and Cutlett (スパカツ) and Sugar-coated Corn Dog have a lot of fans. Red Paper Bystreet (赤ちょうちん横丁) is famous with people for drinking, and the history of the Kushiro can be felt. Speaking of highly reputed restaurants in the Kushiro, Kishin (紀伸) is given 1-star by Michelin Hokkaido, and est di Zuppa (エスト ディ ズッパ), Kita-odori Azumaya (北大通 東屋), Tamagawaan (玉川庵) and Robata Nusamai (炉端 ぬさまい) are given bib gourmand by the Michelin Hokkaido.
Except the nature, the Kushiro does not have famous tourist attractions. But facilities related to cranes and animals such as Akan International Crane Centre (阿寒国際ツルセンター), Red-crowned Crane Natural Park (丹頂鶴自然公園) and Kushiro Zoo (釧路動物園) are popular. In addition, there are Kushiro-shitsugen Art Museum (釧路湿原美術館), Kushiro City Museum (釧路市立博物館), Yonemachi Furusato Museum (米町ふるさと舘), Kobunkan Museum (港文館) and Kushiro Art Museum, Hokkaido (北海道立釧路芸術館) in the Kushiro, too. By the way, the Kushiro is famous as the settings of We Were There (僕等がいた), a popular manga, and Terminal (起終点駅 ターミナル), a famous novel, too, and Anime and Japanese movie were produced as a motif. Visiting the real-life locations is popular, too.
The land of the Kushiro is long from north to south, and Akanko Onsen (阿寒湖温泉), a famous onsen resort, is located in the north part of the Kushiro, and Tancho-no-Sato Onsen (丹頂の里温泉) is located in the middle part of the Kushiro, and Yamahana Onsen (山花温泉) is located in the south part. Except those, hot springs are gushed out at the downtown of the Kushiro. Types of all the hot springs are different, and the Akanko Onsen has a lot of simple hot spring, and brown hot springs can be enjoyed at the Tancho-no-Sato Onsen, and the Yamahana Onsen can be taken a bath at very salty hot spring.
The Kushiro has much events, too. Kushiro Winter Festival (くしろ冬まつり) is held between 2days in early February, and Lake Akan Ice Aisu Festival (Love) Akan “Fuyu Hanabi” (阿寒湖氷上フェスティバル ICE・愛す・阿寒『冬華美』) is held from early February to early March. Then Iomante Fire Spring Festival (イオマンテの火まつり) is held from late April to late June, and Kushiro Tulip and Flower Fair (くしろチューリップ&花フェア) is held between 2days in late May, and Itsukushima Shrine Festival (厳島神社例大祭) is held between 3days in mid July, and Kushiro-shitsugen Marathon (釧路湿原マラソン) is held in a day, late July, and Kushiro Fog Festival (くしろ霧フェスティバル) is held between 3days in late July, and Kushiro Port Festival (くしろ港まつり) is held between 3days in early August, and Kushiro Omotenashi Gourmet Festa (KUSHIROおもてなしグルメフェスタ) is held between 4days in mid August, and Senshin Fireworks Display (釧新花火大会) is held in a day, mid August, and Iomante Fire Autumn Festival is held from September to November, and Kushiro Tairyo Dompaku Fireworks (くしろ大漁どんぱく花火大会) is held in a day, early September, and Mariomo Festival (まりも祭り) is held between 3days in early October.
A direct bus does not run between Sapporo or New Chitose Airport and the Kushiro. But highway buses "Star Light Kushiro-go (スターライト釧路号)" and "Kuhsiro Limited Express New Star-go (釧路特急ニュースター号)" run between the Sapporo and the Kushiro, and Sunrise Asahikawa-Kushiro-go (サンライズ旭川・釧路号), an express bus, runs between the Kushiro and Asahikawa, and Sweets Liner-go (スイーツライナー号) runs between Obihiro and Tancho Kushiro Airport, and Senpoku-go (釧北号), an express bus, runs between the Kitami and the Kushiro, and Akan Airport Liner (阿寒エアポートライナー) runs between Lake Akan and the Tancho Kushiro Airport. Besides, Rent-a-car can be rented around Kushiro Station and Kushiro Airport.
List of Nature Tourist Attractions
The Kushiro has 2 great nature in different atmosphere. One is the Kushiro-Shitsugen Wetland. A few trees grow, and low plants are covered with a marsh land like Savanna. The second is the Lake Akan. Volcanos, forests and lakes create a scenery, and its form is complicated. It is as contrasted with the Kushiro-Shitsugen Wetland. Except those, Lake Harutori (春採湖) is on a hill.
