[Nanpo Tometaro Shoten in Yoichi] Salty Smoked Sweet Shrimp and Smoked Ovalipes Punctatus with Tasty Rich Brown Meat

Nanpo Tometaro Shoten

Kunseiya Nanpo Tometaro Shoten (燻製屋・南保留太郎商店) is a long-established smoked food store founded in 1950 in Yoichi town located in the western part of Otaru city, and is near Yoichi Fishing Port. Smoked Sweet Shrimp (甘エビの燻製), Smoked Ovalipes Punctatus (ヘラ蟹の燻製), Smoked Salmon (鮭の燻製) and so on are famous. They also run Kemukaro (燻香廊), a smoked food restraunt. The appearance of the Nanpo Tometaro Shoten is very old, and the building is a typical old Hokkaido style in Showa Period. The store is small, but it is clean. Customers can do each smoked products tasting, and those will form the basis for their decision in case of the purchase. A place for custmers to enjoy foods and drinks is not provided at the building, but a rest place is provided outside.

Shakotan Peninsula

Shakotan Peninsula (積丹半島) is a peninsula located in the northwestern part of Otaru city, and has been designated as Niseko-Shakotan-Otaru Kaigan Quasi-National Park (ニセコ積丹小樽海岸国定公園) because of a precious complicated coastline with steep cliffs. The sea of the Shakotan is very beautiful, and looks clear blue, so everybody call Shakotan Blue (シャコタンブルー). A traffic used to be inconvenient in the old days, and tourists rarely visited here. People are easy to access the Shakotan Peninsula as well as Shiretoko Peninsula (知床半島) at present, but it is called an unexplored region because it would not develop very much. Article is here

Crab in Hokkaido

Speaking of Hokkaido, it reminds a lot people of crab. Horsehair Crab (毛ガニ * Ke-gani), King Crab (タラバガニ * Taraba-gani), Snow Crab (ズワイガニ * Zuwai-gani), Hanasaki Queen Crab (花咲ガニ * Hanasaki-gani) and so on can be eaten. Fishing grounds are from the Sea of Okhotsk to the Pacific Ocean. Esashi (枝幸) is the most caching place of the Horsehair Crab in Japan, and Monbetsu (紋別) is the most caching place of the Snow Crab in the Japan, and Nemuro is the most caching place of the Hanasaki Queen Crab in the Japan. The King Crab is caught in the Sea of Okhotsk. But, it is almost imported by Russia. Oshamanbe, Hiroo and Omu are well-known as a crab town, too. I purchased a set of Smoked Ovalipes Punctatus consisting (4 pieces), and brought it home, and ate it. An owner told me "It stays good for 3 days in a refrigerator". The price of smoked ovalipes punctatus was JPY 980.

Since foods were smoked, I supposed that I could eat all body, but it was different. Shells surely had a firm place and a soft place. I cut a shell with scissors. To be frank, there were few crab meats, but a smoked fragrance was appetizing. In addition, rich brown meat was too tasty! Thanks for the tasty smoked food!

Smoked Sweet Shrimp

I purchased a pack of Smoked Sweet Shrimps, and planned to eat those outdoor immediately. A break space was established at an edge of eaves, and it was usable freely. Thejust fished sweet prawns were smoked with only salt. First I ate one bite. Since there was not particularly strong taste, I guessed that the taste was only smoked sweet shrimp. However, salty taste gradually spread out in my mouth whenever I ate one bite. In addition, I put smoked prawns in my mouth in sequence, and could not stop eating. This was addictive slow food. Thanks for the tasty smoked food!
