The area is about 275 ha. Flowers and grass grow thick on a slim sand dune with 8 km in width, and this place sparked the primeval flower garden in Hokkaido, and is the only primeval flower garden with a station in the Hokkaido's primeval flower garden. Here is a shooting place for Japanese famous movie "The Yellow Handkerchief" that Mr. Ken Takakura (高倉健) play the lead. Admission free. A parking lot is free of charge.
There are Genseikaen Station (JR原生花園駅), Koshimizu Primeval Flower Garden Information Center "Hana" (小清水原生花園インフォメーションセンター Hana), restrooms and parking lots on the site. The distance is about 15 km away from the center of the Koshimizu, and a convenience store is not built near here. Tofutsuko Waterfowl and Wetland Center (濤沸湖水鳥湿地センター), Maehama Camping Ground (浜清水前浜キャンプ場), Futorei Observation Deck (フレトイ展望台), Kitahama Station (北浜駅) and Genseitei (原生亭) are relatively near here. There is a wooden path in the north side of the lake next to Koshimizu Primeval Flower Garden (小清水原生花園), too. This lake is known as a rest place for waterfowl and about 40 kinds of water birds can be watched. Whooper swan is especially famous in a winter. Japanese pond smelt can be caught in the winter, too. Furetoi Observation Deck (フレトイ展望台) is a lookout in Koshimizu town located in the southeastern part of Abashiri city, and is adjacent to Hamakoshimizu Maehama Campsite (浜小清水前浜キャンプ場), and is near Hamakoshimizu Station (浜小清水駅) and Road Station Hanayaka koshimizu (道の駅「はなやか（葉菜野花）小清水」). Kitahama Station (北浜駅) is an unmanned train station along the Senmo line (釧網線) in the southeastern part of Abashiri city, and is relatively close to Lake Tofutsu (濤沸湖), Koshimizu Primeval Flower Garden (小清水原生花園) and Lake Mokoto (藻琴湖). It is well-known as the closest station to the Sea of Okhotsk in Japan, and its distance is about 20 m from the station to a beach. The distance is about 50 m from the stataion to the sea. In a winter, the sea is covered with drift ice, so the station is popluar as the only station that the drift ice can be seen from a platform in the Japan. The small station has only a waiting room and Cafe "Teishaba" (軽食喫茶「停車場」), but it wss used as a shooting place for various movie or TV drama such as Abashiri Prison (網走番外地), The Ugly Duckling (みにくいアヒルの子) and If You Are the One, so a lot of oversea tourists come. Yuri-no-Sato Koshimizu Lily Park
Yuri-no-Sato Koshimizu Lily Park (ゆりの郷こしみずリリーパーク) is a flower garden in Koshimizu town located in southeastern Abashiri city, and was founded in 1998. About 110 types of 7 million flowers such as lilies are planted at 2 hills of around 13 ha. About 80,000 visitors come. Business season is about 2 months from early July to early September. The best time to see those is from early August to mid August. Various types of the liles such as early lily or late lily bloom depending on the seasons. The late lilies did not bloom yet when I visited here in early August. An entrance fee is JPY 500 for adult. * The entrance fee changes depeding on the seasons. A parking lot is free of charge. Primeval Flower Garden
About 200 types of primeval flowers such as Siberian Lily, Lemon Day-lily, Blackberry Lily iris, Rosa Rugosa and Black Lily bloom from June to August. Especially, The best time to see the primeval flowers is that the Siberian Lily, the Lemon Day-lily and the Rosa Rugosa are full in bloom from mid June to early July. But the primeval flower garden is a flower field without doing the garden, so visitors may be disappointed a little if they expect the flower garden like Farm Tomita in Nakafurano. Do not expect too much. By the way, Sakhalin Grasshopper, a rare insect, inhabits, too.
The primeval flower garden spread over the sandy dune of 275 ha, but tourist area is only around the Genseikaen Station. Walks are built on a part of the site. I think that views from the Tenrangaoka Lookout are the best seeing. Flowers, Shiretoko Mountain Range and the Sea of the Okhotsk can be enjoyed. Unfortunately, views of the Lake Tofutsu is not good. In addition, beach is the singing sand in the northernmost of Japan. When I stepped the sand, it sounded. The walks are short, so the time it takes to look around is around 30 minutes. You may be tired because of a difference of elevation, so you should wear comfortable shoes.
