It is said that the Fall Foliage of the Hokkaido turns into red color at the earliest in Japan. The best time to see the fall foliage comes in Daisetsu-zan at high altitude, and it comes gradually in low areas. It comes in Mt. Asahidake (旭岳) and in Mt. Kurodake (黒岳) in mid September, and autumn leaves fall in early November. As for the highlight of the Fall Foliage of the Hokkaido, tourists are bowled over by vast nature with the fall foliage, or are bowled over by small space that goes well with the fall foliage. Except famous beauty spots for the fall foliage, there are less famous beauty spots for the fall foliage such usual mountains and rivers or gorges here and there.

Fall Foliage in Southern Hokkaido

The fall foliage around Hakodate city can be enjoyed until early November, the latest fall foliage season in Hokkaido. Onuma Quasi-National Park (大沼国定公園), Kosetsuen (香雪園), Esan (恵山), Daisanzaka Slope (大三坂), Goryokaku Fort (五稜郭公園), Sasanagare Dam (笹流ダム) and Unseki Pass (雲石峠) are known as the beauty spots for the fall foliage. I visited only the Lake Onuma to see the fall foliage, and it was fantastic!

Lake Onuma (大沼) is the largest lake in Onuma Quasi National Park, and is well-known as a beauty spot to see fall foliage in Hokkaido, too. A combination of Mt. Komagadake (駒ヶ岳) and small islands with fall foliage floated on the surface of the Lake Onuma is very good. 4 trails, Oshima Trail (大島の路), Forest Trail (森の小径), Island Hopping Trail (島巡りの路) and Sunset Trail (夕日の道), are provided around Park Plaza (公園広場), and I have walked the Oshima Trail and the Island Hopping Trail on foot. Fall Foliage in Central Hokkaido

Central Hokkaido is the largest land in Hokkaido, and various situation from high mountains to the level ground can be enjoyed. The fall foliage season is different depending on various regions, and is relatively wide from late September to late October, too. I visited the Jozankei, the Hoheikyo, the Hokkaido University, the Odori Park, the Hiraoka Greenary Center, the Noboribetsu Onsen Jigokudani, the Shinsennuma Pond and the Takinoue Park. Each situations go well with red leavles or yellow leaves, so those are very beautiful.

Fall Foliage around Jozankei

Jozankei (定山渓) is famous for Onsen, and is well-known as a good place to see fall foliage, too. Leaves of trees turn its color along Toyohira River (豊平川) located in the central of Jozankei Onsen, and Futami Park (二見公園), Futami Tsuribashi Suspension Bridge (二見吊橋), Tsukimi Bridge (月見橋), Jozankei-ohashi Bridge (定山渓大橋), Nishiki Bridge (錦橋) and Shiraito Falls (白糸の滝) are famous for the fall foliage. Sapporo International Ski Resort (札幌国際スキー場), Jozankei Dam Karyuenchi (定山渓ダム下流園地), Lake Sapporo (さっぽろ湖) and Hoheikyo that are a little far away from the Jozankei Onsen are famous for the fall foliage, too. Fall Foliage around Hoheikyo

Hoheikyo (豊平峡) is located in the southwestern part of Sapporo city, and is farther than Jozankei Onsen (定山渓温泉) from downtown. Although it is in Sapporo city, it is located in Shikotsu Toya National Park (支笏洞爺国立公園), and nature is very rich. The Hoheikyo has Hoheikyo Dam and Lake Jozan (定山湖), and is well-known as a good place to see fall foliage. There are Hoheikyo Onsen (豊平峡温泉), Nature Village and an auto camping ground near the Lake Jozan (定山湖). Furthermore, Onsen Shokudo's Indian curry (Onsen食堂のインドカレー) in Hoheikyo Onsen is popular. In the 4 observation platforms, enjoying most beautiful views is the Sapporoko 1st Observation Platform. The Jozankei Dam, Mt. Kotengudake (小天狗岳) and Kobiki Bridge (木挽大橋) go well with fresh green and the fall foliage. The Sapporoko 1st Observation Platform is crowded with tourists in fall foliage season. Hiraoka Greenary Center with Fall Foliage

Hiraoka Greenary Center (平岡樹芸センター) is a botanical park opend in 1984, and is commonly known as Midorimu (みどりーむ). Mr. Sanjiro Takezawa (竹澤三次郎) donate land with trees, and the park was developed. 100 kinds of trees, about ten thousand tress, such as 3000 Japanese Yew (イチイ) and 700-800 Mountain Maple Trees (ヤマモミジ), Nomura Maple Trees (ノムラモミジ) and Japanese Weeping Maple Trees (シダレモミジ) are planted on the site of about 3 ha. The park is famous as a beauty sopt for cherry blossom and fall foliage, too, and a lot of tourists and photographers come to take photos in cherry blossom season, from early June to mid June, and fall foliage season, from mid october to early November. Takinoue Park (滝の上公園) is a park in Yubari city located in the southeast part of Sapporo city. Speaking of the Takinoue Park, Shibazakura Takinoue Park in Takinoue town is famous for moss pink, but this park is well-known as a beauty spot to see the fall foliage. The best time to see the fall foliage is from early October to mid October. In addition, Momiji Festival (紅葉まつり * Fall Foliage Festival) is held on Saturday and Sunday in mid October. Jigokudani (地獄谷 * Hell Valley) is an explosion crater in Noboribetsu Onsen (登別温泉) located in the western part of Lake Kuttara (倶多楽湖), and was born by eruptions of Mt. Kasa (笠山) 10,000 years ago. A lot of hot spring gushing out points and fumaroles are on the explosion crater of about 11 ha. Wasteland without trees and grass has been some hot spring rivers and volcano smoke, and it was associated with a Buddhism hell that demons live in by people in old times, so here was named "Jigokudani". It is well-known as a synonym for the Noboribetsu Onsen, and around the Jigokudani is famous for a scenic spot to see autumn leaves. Oyunuma Pond (大湯沼) and Mt. Hiyori (日和山), River Oyunuma Natural Footbath (大湯沼川足湯), 6 pathways such as Jigokudani Pathway (地獄谷遊歩道), Oyunuma Pathway (大湯沼遊歩道), Oyunuma 2nd Pathway (大湯沼第2遊歩道), Oyunuma Scenic Pathway (大湯沼川探勝歩道), Funamiyama Pathway (船見山遊歩道) and Funamiyama 2nd Pathway (船見山第2遊歩道) have the fall foliage in an autumn. Fall Foliage around Shinsen-numa Wetland

Shinsen-numa Swamp (神仙沼) is the largest swamp at about 770 m above sea level in the Shinsen-numa Wetland in Kyowa town located in the western part of Sapporo city, and is well-known for a good place to see beautiful fall foliage, so a lot of visitors come. Mr. Toyomatsu Shimoda (下田豊松), the Japan's first chief scout, that was moved by a phrase "Everything is God, here is a place that a hermit lives in (皆が神、仙人の住みたまう所)" named it the Shinsen-numa Swamp. Shinsennuma Rest Station (神仙沼自然休養林休憩所) is at Shinsen-numa Parking Lot along Hokkaido Road 66, and light meals are served. It opens a business from late May to early November. Beauty spots for the fall foliage in Northern Hokkaido are concentrated in Kamikawa. It is said that Daisetsu-zan (大雪山) turns red in mid September at the earliest in Japan, and it is said that Daisetsu Kogen Onsen (大雪高原温泉) is the most beautiful fall foliage in Japan, too, and there are a lot of the beauty spots for the fall foliage around Sokunkyo (層雲峡). Sounkyo (層雲峡), the Daisetsu Kogen Onsen, Ginsendai (銀泉台), Ryusei Falls and Ginga Falls (流星の滝と銀河の滝), Mt. I visited the Sounkyo, the Daisetsu Kogen Onsen, the Ginsendai, the Ryusei Falls and Ginga Falls, the Mt. Asahikdake and the Kamuikotan to enjoy the fall foliage. I think that the Daisetsu-zan with the fall foliage is too large-scale.

Sounkyo with Fall Foliage

Sounkyo (層雲峡) in Kamikawa town located in the southeastern part of Asahikawa city is a hot-spring resort as a famous fall foliage place. The whole area of Sounkyo is clothed in autumn leaves, and in particular a scenery from Mt. Kurodake (黒岳) is beautiful. A ropeway and a lift are installed from the hot-spring resort of Sounkyo Onsen (層雲峡温泉) to Mt. Kurodake. It is extremely appealing that tourists can reach to the fifth station on the Mt. Kurodake without climbing a mountain on foot. The tourists can look over a very splendid scenery from a high place. The fall foliage is the best season to see in mid September. The tourists will enjoy the splendid scenery of Mts. Daisetuzan (大雪山) called "The garden that gods have a good time (神々が遊ぶ庭)". By the way, the Mt. Kurodake changes to a ski resort in a winter. Daisetsu-Kogen Swamp Group (大雪高原沼群) is in the southern part of Kamikawa town located in the southeastern part of Asahikawa city, and is well-known as one of great places to see fall foliage in Japan, and about 30 large and small swamps are dotted with a highland at 1,200 - 1,500 above sea level. Mt. Asahidake (旭岳) is an active volcano at an altitude of 2,291 m in Higashikawa town located in the southeastern part of Asahikawa city. In Omote-daisestu Area (表大雪エリア), Daisetsuzan National Park, the Mt. Asahidake is the highest mountain in Daisetsuzan Mountain Range (大雪山), and is also the highest mountain in Hokkaido. The Daisetsuzan Mounatin Range has been called "Kamuimintara (カムイミンタラ)" by Ainu people since a very long time ago, and means "A garden that gods have a good time" in Ainu lanugae, and I think that you will be satisfied with the translator if you see a grandmagnificent scenery. But an another meaning is "a home of brown bears", and local people call here a nest of the brown bears, so a lot of the bears inhabit. Kamuikotan (神居古潭) is a picturesque scenery in the southwestern Asahikawa city, and the Asahikawa city keeps former Kamuikotan Station as a park between Fukagawa City and the Asahikawa city. A combination of meandering and rocks is beautiful scenery, and here is well-known as a good place to see fall foliage and a haunted place, too. There are Kamui Rocks (神居岩), Kamui Bridge (神居大橋), Steam Locomotives, the former Kamuikotan Station (旧神居古潭駅舎), a cycle track, a monument in memory of Takeko Kujo (九条武子), Minamiyama Shoten (南山商店), 2 parking lots and a public restroom in the site. Shiretoko Pass (知床峠), Mikuni Pass (三国峠), Lake Nukabira (糠平湖), Lake Kussharo (屈斜路湖), Lake Akan (阿寒湖), Lake Onneto (オンネトー), Lake Shikaribetsu (然別湖), Pyotan-no-Taki Falls (ピョウタンの滝), Iwanai Gorge (岩内仙峡), Lake Notoro (能取湖), Lake Saroma (サロマ湖) and Lake Komuke (コムケ湖) are known as the beauty spots for the fall foliage. I visited the Mikuni Pass, the Lake Kussharo, the Lake Akan, the Lake Onneto, the Lake Notoro, the Lake Saroma and the Lake Komuke to enjoy the fall foliage. A rare plant, Coral Grass Colony with the fall foliage, can be seen in the the Lake Notoro, the Lake Saroma and the Lake Komuke, and Large colonies of the Coral Grass Colony are grown only along the Sea of Okhotsk in the Eastern Hokkaido in Japan.

Mikuni Pass (三国峠) in Kamishihoro located in the north part of Obihiro is the highest pass at 1,139 m above sea level in Hokkaido, and is on National Route 273 (Nukabira National Route (糠平国道)) that connects Kamikawa (上川) with Tokachi (十勝), and penetrates Daisetsuzan National Park (大雪山国立公園) in the north-south direction. There is no house around the Mikuni Pass, a sea of trees such as Sakhalin Fir (トドマツ) and Yezo Spruce (エゾマツ) spreads over. The sea of the trees is covered with fall foliage, so a lot of tourists come to a good place to see the fall foliage. The best time to see the fall foliage is from mid September to early October. Mikuni-toge Lookout (三国峠展望台) is in front of Mikuni Tunnel (三国トンネル). Admission free. A parking lot is free of charge. Mikuni Cafe (三国Cafe), a drinking fountain, a public restroom and the parking lot are provided on the site. The Lake Onneto is in Ashoro town, but the distance is around 50 km away from the center of the Ashoro, and the distance is around 20 km away from Akako Onsen Resort (阿寒湖温泉街), so a convenience store is not built around here. But Onneto-Chaya (オンネトー茶屋) is around here, and tourists can have a lunch there. There are the Mt. Meakandake, the Mt. Akanfuji, the Lake Onento, Onneto Observation Deck (オンネトー展望デッキ), Onneto Hot Falls (オンネトー湯の滝), Onneto Campsite (オンネトー野営場), Onneto Lookout (オンネトー展望台), Meakan Onsen (雌阿寒温泉), Kagami Swamp (鏡沼), Ao Swamp (青沼), Aka Swamp (赤沼) and Rawanbuki Field (ラワンブキ観賞ほ場) around here, and trails and walking paths are built, too. Lake Kussharo is famous for fall foliage, too. The fall foliage in Wakoto Peninsula is beautiful, and the fall foliage along Hokkaido Route 52 Kussharo-Mashukohan Line is beautiful, too. Ubaranai Coral Grass Colony

Ubaranai Coral Grass Colony (卯原内のアッケシソウ群生地) is a tourist attraction on the south beach of Lake Notoro (能取湖) in the western part of Abashiri city, and is well-known as the largest coral grass colony in Japan. In early September, the coral grass turns red, and the lakeshore is covered with red color. It was on the verge of extinction under the influence of soil improvement in the past, but it is recovered at present. The colony is in good condition on the lakeshore along a road from Okhotsk National Route (National Route 238) to Ubaranai Fishing Port (卯原内漁港). It is hard to find the road, so visitors should use Notoro-no-so Kagariya (能取の荘 かがり屋) in front of the colony as a landmark. A small restraunt, a public restroom and a parking lot are on the site. The best season to see the red coral grass is from early September to mid September. Admission free. The parking lot is free of charge. Coral Grass Colonies around Lake Saroma

Lake Saroma (サロマ湖) is a brackish water lake among Kitami city, Saroma town and Yubetsu town, and is the 3rd largest lake after Lake Biwa (琵琶湖) and Lake Kasumigaura (霞ヶ浦) in Japan. The lake has no name in Ainu language, and they called it just lake. It is well-known for tasty seafood such as Oyster and Scallop, and moderate salty lakeshore is suitable for the coral grass, and some coral grass colonies are around the lake. Lake Komuke and Coral Grass Colony

Lake Komuke (コムケ湖) is a brackish water lake in Monbetsu city located in the northwest part of Abashiri city, and means "Bent Marsh" in Ainu language. The perimeter of the lake is about 22.7 km. The maximum water depth is 3.8 m. 3 large and small lakes are connected each other, and are collectively called the Lake Komuke. It is hardly become a sightseeing spot, and a beautiful scenery has been left in its natural state. A sandy road is between the Lake Komuke and the Sea of Okhotsk, and visitors can observe the nature along the road. But pay attention to stuck your car.
