May 22nd, 2015

Kiyosato Onsen

Kiyosato Onsen (清里温泉) is a hot spring place in Kiyosato town located in the southern part of Shari town in the Shiretoko peninsula. The Kiyosato (it means clean + village in Chinese characters) seems to be associated with pure water because Kaminoko Pond (神の子池) and Lake Mashu (摩周湖) are near here. Hotel Ryokusei-so (ホテル緑清荘) is bulit beside Kiyosato Training Center (清里トレーニングセンター) near the center of the Kiyosato. Restraunts, Izakaya and a convenience store are relatively near, too.

Speaking of tasty restaurants in the Kiyosato, Shusaiya Ota (酒菜屋大田) and Restraunt Papas (レストランパパス) are popular in particular. Some sports events are held, Granfondo Kiyosato is held in early July, and Sharidake Road Race (斜里岳ロードレース) is held in mid September.

Kaminoko Pond

Kaminoko Pond (神の子池) is in Kiyosato town located in the northeast part of Lake Mashu (摩周湖). This is a small pond with 5 m in depth and the perimeter of the pond is 220 m. Because trees that sank into the pond have never rotted, it was named Kminoko Pond. * Kaminoko means "Son of the God" in Japanese language. Many tourists come to share mysterious water's good and it become a popular tourist attraction as a spiritual place. Because there is the pond in mountains, beware of bears. Article is here

Uramashu means "Behind of Lake Mashu or Underworld of Lake Mashu" in English. Tourists can look over Lake Mashu (摩周湖) on the right side of Mt. Mashu (摩周岳). But I regretted that trees disturbed my view. There are a souvenir shop and a restroom on the site. Admission free. A parking lot is free of charge. Uramashu Observatory is closed down in a winter.
