[Kijihiki Highland Panoramic Lookout in Hokuto] Mt. Komagadake and Hakodate Night View from Back Side Spread out Before Visitor's Eyes

Kijihiki Highland
Kijihiki Highland (きじひき高原) is a highland on Mt. Kijihiki (木地挽山) of about 660 m elevation in Hokuto city located in the northern direction of Hakodate city, and is named after sliding down cutting logs. Ranches, Takumi-no-Mori Park (匠の森公園), Miharashi Park (見晴公園), Kijihiki Highland Campsite (きじひき高原キャンプ場), Panoramic Lookout (パノラマ展望台), Melody Road (メロディーロード), Funkawan Lookout (噴火湾展望台) and Kijihiki Park (きじひき公園) are built at the highland. The Panoramic Lookout built at about 560 m above sea level is famous for a good view, and Mt. Hakodate (函館山), Hakodate Plain (函館平野) and Mt. Komagadake (駒ヶ岳) and Onuma Park (大沼公園) can be seen clearly if it is fine weather. The lookout is also known as a night view spot, and it is often called "Night View from Back Side (裏夜景)" because of locating opposite side of famous Hakodate Night Views. The lookout is a popular secret spot together with Shirotai Ranch Lookout (城岱牧場展望台). By the way, opening hour of a gate on the way is from 08:30 to 20:00, so do not be left behind! They close a business from November to Mid April. Admission free. A parking lot is free of charge, too. Kijihiki Highland Festival (きじひき高原まつり) is held only in a day, mid August.

By the way, a direct bus does not run from Sapporo or New Chitose Airport to the Kijihiki Highland, but Kosoku Hakodate-go (高速はこだて号), an express buse, run between the Sapporo and the Hakodate, and it stops at the Hokuto.
Mt. Hakodate
Mt. Hakodate (函館山) is a range of mountains with 334 m in height in the west side of Hakodate city, and is general term of 13 mountains. Another name is Mt. Gagyu (臥牛山). The Mt. Hakodate used to be an island originally, but a sandbar grew on the sea, and the downtown of the Hakodate was built on the sandbar. A view of the Hakodate downtown has been famous since old days, and is one of the 3 best night views in the world together with Hongkong in China and Napoli in Italy. "A View from Mt. Hakodate" was given 3 stars in Michelin Green Guide Japon 2011. It features that world people rate "The View from the Mt. Hakodate" highly. In addition, it is also well-known as one of the 3 best night views in Hokkaido together with Mt. Tengu in Otaru and Mt. Moiwa in Sapporo. After all, the night view is most popular. Admission free. Shirotai Ranch Lookout
Shirotai Ranch Lookout (城岱牧場展望台) is a scenic spot around the top of the Shirotai Ranch along Shirotai Skyline Road (城岱スカイライン) between Lake Onuma and Hakodate in Nanae town located in the northern direction of the Hakodate city. The lookout is surrounded by pasture lands, and has a typical view of Hokkaido. In addition, the superb view from there is different from ordinary ranches. Mt. Hakodate (函館山), Hakodate Plain (函館平野), the sea and the sky spread over before visitors's eyes on the mountain at about 550 m above sea level. It is known as a night view spot, too, and it is often called "Night View from Back Side (裏夜景)" because of locating opposite side of famous Hakodate Night Views. Onuma Quasi-National Park
Onuma Quasi-National Park (大沼国定公園) is a quasi-national park at the foot of Mt. Komagatake (駒ヶ岳) in the southern part of Hokkaido, and is between Nanae town, Shikabe town and Mori town. Its area is 9,083 ha. The park has been designated as the quasi-national park since 1958, and 2 million tourists come. It consists of the Mt. Komagatake of 1,131 m elevation, an active volcano, Lake Ounma (大沼湖), Lake Konuma (小沼湖), Junsai Swamp (蓴菜沼), and beautiful scneries are highlights. The Onuma Quasi-National Park has been chosen as one of The 3 New Views of Japan (新日本三景) together with Miho-no-Matsubara (三保の松原) in Shizuoka prefecture and Yabakei (耶馬渓) in Oita prefecture since 1915. It is also famous for fall foliage, and has been chosen as one of The 100 Best Fall Foliage Spots in Japan (日本紅葉の名所100選). When the Mt. Komagatake erupted from 50,000 to 30,000 years ago, a river was dammed by flowing mud flood, and those lakes were created. Panoramic Lookout
The lookout, a building, a parking lot are built at the Panoramic Lookout (パノラマ展望台), and the building has an observation deck, a restroom, a resting place and vending machines. An observation platform and Kijihiki Taihei Kanon (木地挽大平観音) are built on the large lookout, and 360 degree view such as the Mt. Hakodate, the Hakodate Plain, the Mt. Komagadake, the Onuma Park and Mt. Yotei can be enjoyed. The sea of clouds covered with the Onuma Park can sometimes be seen from April to June. The mountain goes well with the sea of the clouds. The Mt. Hakodate, the Hakodate Plain, the Mt. Komagadake and the Onuma Park can be viewed at the observation deck of the building, and the views are also good.
