[Kawamata Onsen in Noboribetsu] Day Trip Bath and Natural Open-air Bath Can Be Enjoyed
Kawamata Onsen (川又温泉) is a hot spring place in Noboribetsu city located in the northeastern direction of Muroran city, and is well-known as a secret onsen at about 240 m above sea level in mountains. Brown bears may inhabit in forests. The distance is around 16 km far away from the center of the Horobetsu, so there is nothing around here. But Horobetsu Dam (幌別ダム) and Kawakami Nature Park are relatively near here. Speaking of the Noboribetsu, Onsen such as Noboribetsu Onsen (登別温泉), Shinnoboribetsu Onsen (新登別温泉) and Noboribetsu Karurusu Onsen (カルルス温泉) are famous. In addition, famous tourist attractions are Jigokudani (地獄谷), Noboribetsu Bear Ranch (のぼりべつ熊牧場), Noboribetsu Date Jidaimura (登別伊達時代村) and Noboribetsu Marine Park Nixe (登別マリンパークニクス). By the way, tasty restaurants in the Noboribetsu are Restaurant Ishikawa (洋食のいし川), Choice (ちょいす), Noboribetsu Rakunokan (のぼりべつ酪農館), Local Restaurant Yumemiru (地域食堂 ゆめみ～る), and Moon and Lion (月とらいおん) in particular.
Jigokudani and Fall Foliage
Noboribetsu Onsen (登別温泉) is one of the largest hot spring resorts in Hokkaido, and is known as a beauty spot for fall foliage, too. Jigokudani (地獄谷) that has become a synonym for the Noboribetsu Onsen, Oyunuma Pond (大湯沼) and Mt. Hiyori (日和山), River Oyunuma Natural Footbath (大湯沼川足湯), 6 pathways such as Jigokudani Pathway (地獄谷遊歩道), Oyunuma Pathway (大湯沼遊歩道), Oyunuma 2nd Pathway (大湯沼第2遊歩道), Oyunuma Scenic Pathway (大湯沼川探勝歩道), Funamiyama Pathway (船見山遊歩道) and Funamiyama 2nd Pathway (船見山第2遊歩道) have the fall foliage in an autumn. A combination of sulfurous odour and the fall foliage can be enjoyed. The best time to see is from mid October to late October. Admission free. A parking lot is chraged. * If visitors pay a parking fee, the visitors can park their cars on Jigokudani Parking Lot (地獄谷の駐車場) and Oyunuma Parking Lot (大湯沼の駐車場). Read More
Mr. Hyokichi Kawamata (川又兵吉) found a gushing hot spring along Washibetsu-kuruma River (鷲別来馬川) in 1908, so it was named after his family name. Kozan-cho was developed to dig sulphur, and Horobetsu kozan (幌別鉱山) opened a business, so it was developed around Kozan-cho, too. I guess that he also was one of the persons concerned the Horobetsu kozan. Ryokan was built nearby the Kawamata Onsen and was crowded with the persons concerned the Horobetsu kozan in those days. But only stone foundations remain in the heart of the mountains at present.
Shikotsu-Toya National Park
Shikotsu-Toya National Park (支笏洞爺国立公園) has Lake Shikotsu (支笏湖), the 2nd largest caldera lake in Japan, and Lake Toya (洞爺湖), the 3rd largest caldera lake in the Japan, in the southwestern part of Hokkaido. In the national park, there are unique mountains such as Mt. Usu (有珠山), Mt. Tarumae (樽前山) and Mt. Showa-shinzan (昭和新山), and here is a tourist attraction on behalf of Hokkaido containing Noboribetsu Onsen (登別温泉) and Jozankei Onsen (定山渓温泉) in the 3 major onsen in the Hokkaido. Because it is easy to access the tourist attracions from New Chitose Airport and Sapporo city, the Shikotsu-Toya National Park gets popularity from tourists. The Shikotsu-Toya National Park is roughly divided into 5 areas, Yoteizan Area, Toyako Area, Noboribetsu Area, Shikotsuko Area and Jozankei Area. The area is 99,473 ha in total, it is very vast. It blows my mind why it adds the Yoteizan Area and the Jozankei Area, but I googled it, but I could not find. Read More
List of Day Trip Onsen
Visitors can take a day trip bath at the Kawamata Onsen.
Kawamata Onsen is a natural opem-air bath in Kozan-cho, Noboribetsu city. An entrance fee to a bath facility is free of charge. An open-air bath and trails are maintenanced by staffs of Forest Kozan (ふぉれすと鉱山) and onsen lovers. Thanks!
There are 2 trail routes to reach to Kawamata Onsen. I planed to climb on the trail route from a parking lot near an entrance of Papirattsu Forest (パピラッツの森). It has about 1.8 km in total. The trail route was blocked by fallen trees and an avalanche of the earth and rocks, but I arrived at the Kawamata Onsen for about 40 minutes. Another trail route is the traul route from an entrance of Katsura-hiroba (かつら広場) to the Kawamata Onsen, The length is about 800 m.
A wooden dressing room is a mark, and it may be said that the smell of sulfur is the mark, too. The trail routes have rivers and mud, so bathers should put on their long rain boots. In addition, bears live around here, and you should bring a bear bell, and should keep bugs off, too.
There is 1 open-air bath along the Washibetsu-kuruma River. It is the size that about 1 person can take a bath, and the depth is about 50 cm, and hot springs are gushing out from the bottom of the bath. Water temperature is around 30 C, and it is too lukewarm, so odrinary people may take a bath only in a summer. I visited here in early May, Ultimately, I was too cold to give up bathing. But I think bathers can feel comfortale while takeing a bath and hearing a sound of a stream in the summer.
The hot springs seem to be simple sulfur spring, and are clear and colorless and have tasteless and sulfur smell, but I do not know the details for lack of the analysis table of hot spring components. The fresh hot springs that gush out from the bottom without oxidizing overflow freely from the bath to the river. I guess that the bathers can take a bath in wearing their swimsuits or in wrapping body with their bath towels. A use of shampoo and soap is prohibited because water of the river is polluted. In addition, a bath pail is hung on a wall of the dressing room, so please pour hot springs on yourself with the bath pail before taking a bath.

By the way, Club Tourism (クラブツーリズム), a Japanese tour travel agency, provides various types of tours such as day trip tours or ordinary tours. In the case of bus tours, tourists do not drive their cars themselves, so they can savor alcohol. Choosen tourist attractions are national parks such as Rishiri and Rebun, Shiretoko, and popular tourist places such as Furano and Biei, and some activities such as hiking and fruit picking are also enjoyed depending on seasons. If you are interested in tour trips, you should visit the club tourism's website for details.
