[Kawakita Onsen in Shibestu] Day Trip Bath Can Be Enjoyed at Open-air Bath in Mountains

Kawakita Onsen

Kawakita Onsen (川北温泉) is a hot spring place in Shibetsu town located in the root of the Shiretoko Peninsula, and is well-known as a secret onsen at about 310 above sea level in mountains. Here surrounded by trees is called "A nest of brown bears", so a lot of them inhabit. It is the origin of the Kawakita Onsen that Takezawa-no-Yu (竹沢の湯) was opened in the Meiji period. After that, some onsen ryokan closed down, up to now. Speaking of the Shibetsu, there is the head office of Fukuzumi (福住), a famous buckwheat noodles restraunt chain. In addition, famous tourist attractions in the Shibetsu are Shibetsu Salmon Museum (標津サーモン科学館) and Po River Nature Park (ポー川史跡自然公園).

Visitors can take a day trip bath at the Kawakita Onsen.

Kawakita Onsen

Kawakita Onsen is an open-air bath without a roof. Kawakita Onsen Townspeople Recreation Center (川北温泉町民保養所) used to open a business, and closed down. A building was destroyed by a storm, and only baths remain. Local people manage it, and bathers can take a bath for free at present. A restroom is a little way from a dressing room. Sasa-no-sawa Forest Road (笹の沢林道) is closed from late October to late June, so except the during, tourists can go to here by car. In addition, the road sometimes closed a gate by road troubles.

A signboard is built near Kanayama Bridge (金山橋) along National Route 244, and vitiors arrive at Kawakita Onsen if the visitors will go along the rough road for 5 km. Drive carefully because the rough narrow road faces cliffs. It will be buried under a snow in a winter, and the visitors must walk on the snow.

2 open-air public bathrooms for men or women are provided, and there is 1 open-air bath at the bathroom. The open-air bath surrounded by rocks is the size that about 3 people can take a bath, and uses natural free flowing hot springs. A lot of the hot springs overflow from the bath. A shower is not installed at the bath space, so you must pour the hot springs on yourself to rinse off your surface dirt and sweat before entering the bath.

But, with the situation as it is, the bathers probably will not be too hot to take a bath because water temperature of hot spring source is about 60 C. The bathers should adjust the water temperature with spouting water from a hose myself. A sense of openness can be felt without a roof. The bathers can take a bath comfortably while hearing the murmuring of a tributary river of Shurui River (忠類川) and birdsong because the river flows near open-air bath surrounded by nature.

The hot springs are boric acid and sulfate spring, and are milky white and have salty sulfur taste and sulfur smell. The hot spring color is clear and colorless on different occasions, too. A plastic cup was provided, too. When I drunk the hot springs, it tasted like soup stock. I have never drunk the taste of the hot springs.
