Speaking of the Kamiyubetsu, tulips are famous. In a spring, a lot of tourists visit the Kamiyubetsu. I suppose that they follow famous kamiyubetsu's name because they have named the Kamiyubetsu Onsen as a hot sping place in the Nakayubetsu. By the way, Lake Saroma (サロマ湖), the largest lake in Hokkaido, is relatively near here. Speaking of tasty restaurants in the Yubetsu, Tulip (ちゅーりっぷ) and Menya Okhotsk (麺屋おほーつく) are popular in particular. I ate a meal at the Menya Okhotsk, and it was tasty. Nonstop buses do not run, but an intercity bus, Highway Bus Engaru-go (高速えんがる号), runs between Sapporo and Engaru.

    Kamiyubetsu Tulip Fair

Kamiyubetsu Tulip Park (かみゆうべつチューリップ公園) is in Kamiyubetsu, Yubetsu town located in the northern direction of Kitami city, and is well-known as one of 2 major places famous for tulips together with Takino Suzuran Hillside National Government Park (滝野すずらん公園) in Hokkaido, and the Kamiyubetsu Tulip Fair (かみゆうべつチューリップフェア) is famous as one of 3 major Okhotsk Spring Festivals together with Higashimokoto Moss Pink Feastival (東藻琴芝桜祭) and Fairy Tale village Takinoue Moss Pink Festival (童話村たきのうえ芝ざくらまつり) in Japan. The park surrounded by fields is developed as a flower field along Oketo National Route (National Route 242). It is the origin of the Kamiyubetsu Tulip Park that Mr. Terunori Nishikawa (西川照憲) planted a tulip, and described here as old people's farm in 1957. About 200 kinds of 1.2 million tulips are planted on the site of 700,000 m2 at present. I think that visitors must be very impressed by colorful tulip lines on the flatland. Admission is charged, but a parking lot is free of charge. Except the Kamiyubetsu Tulip Fair season, admission free. Read More

    Lake Saroma

Lake Saroma (サロマ湖) that stretches over Kitami Tokoro town, Saraoma town and Yubetsu town is a brackish water lake located in the northeast part of Kitami city. The perimeter of the lake is approximately 87 km and the area of the lake is 152 km2. The Lake Saroma is the third largest lake in Japan and is the most largest lake in Hokkaido. A sandbar with approximately 200 m to 700 m in width separates the Lake Saroma from the Sea of Okhotsk (オホーツク海), and the lake links the sea with only two places. In old days, the sandbar separeted the Lake Saroma from the Sea of Okhotsk depending on seasons fully. Read More

The day trip onsen facility is at the innermost building on the 1st floor. They provide 2 types of public bathhouse, a publice bathhouse with hinoki cypress walls (Japanese-style bathhouse) and a publice bathhouse with stone walls (Western-style bathhouse), so the public bathhouses for men and women interchange every day. I took a bath at the publice bathhouse with stone walls, and a lots of bathers came. There are 1 open-air bath, 1 indoor bath, 1 whirlpool bath, 1 cascade waterfall bath, 1 cold bath and 1 sauna, and the bathhouse has a high ceiling. The bathhouse with large glass windows are feeling good. In addition, some pots of house plants are set on the bath floor here and there, so I think that that is a rare public bathhouse.

The rectangle indoor bath beside the windows is the size that about 20 people can take a bath. Its water temperature is about 40 C. The circular whirlpool bath is the size that about 6 people can take a bath. Its water temperature is about 39 C. The cascade waterfall bath for 2 people is provided. The open-air bath, the open-air water bath and the sauna are at the out of the building. Water like waterfalls drops on a stone wall, and flows to a pond. It is a good atmosphere. Because it does not has a roof, a sence of openness can be enjoyed.

The hot springs are sodium bicarbonate spring, and are clear and colorless and have tastless and odorless. A touch of the hot springs is slippery. The sum total of the hot spring ingredients are 2.148 g/kg. Drinking hot springs seemed to be possible, but I could not find a place for drinking the hot springs. Unfortunately, the hot springs at the all baths are not drinkable because of chlorine sterilization. Shampoos and body soaps are provided at the bathhouse. A hair dryer, a cold water dispenser and a restroom are set at a dressing room. A resting room for free is provided, too.

By the way, Club Tourism (クラブツーリズム), a Japanese tour travel agency, provides various types of tours such as day trip tours or ordinary tours. In the case of bus tours, tourists do not drive their cars themselves, so they can savor alcohol. Choosen tourist attractions are national parks such as Rishiri and Rebun, Shiretoko, and popular tourist places such as Furano and Biei, and some activities such as hiking and fruit picking are also enjoyed depending on seasons. If you are interested in tour trips, you should visit the club tourism's website for details.
