[Iwao Onsen in Mashike] Day Trip Bath and Beautiful Setting Sun Can Be Enjoyed

February 2nd, 2014

Iwao Onsen

Iwao Onsen (岩尾温泉) is a hot-spring place in Mashike town along the Sea of Japan located in the western part of Asahikawa city and, is well-known for the beautiful setting sun over the sea of the Japan. It is relatively near Cape Ofuyu (雄冬岬) in Shokanbetsu Teuri Yagishiri Quasi-National Park (暑寒別天売焼尻国定公園). Because it is originally too inaccessible land to hard to build a road, buildings such as Yuseki-so (夕陽荘) and Iwao Onsen Attamaru (岩尾温泉あったま~る) are built on sheer rock along the Ororon Line (National Route 231) thinly. The Iwao Onsen is about 20 km away from the center of the Mashike, and it takes about 20 minutes by car. I missed it several times because the buildings are on the sheer rock. A mark is Iwaoi Fishing Port (岩老漁港). In addition, Drive safely at a precipitous slope. Unfortunately, restraunts, cafes, cafes, souvenir shops and convenience stores are not built.

Iwao Onsen

It is the origin of the Iwao Onsen that after the National Route 231 finished developing in 1981, Iwao Onsen, the predecessor of Iwao Onsen Attamaru) opened a business. A type of hot springs is cold spring, non medical springs, but it is said that it has an effect for Skin diseases and Rheumatism. Tourist attractions relatively near here are Ofuyumisaki Observatory (雄冬岬展望台) and Shiragane Falls (白銀の滝). By the way, the center of the Mashike have some historical buildings, and visitors can go sightseeing. As for tasty restraunts, Sushi Matsukura (寿司のまつくら), Fukuyoshi (福よし) and Cafe do Soba Rin (カフェドゥソバ 凜) are popular in particular around the center of the Mashike. In addition, Kunimare Sake Brewer (國稀酒造) is famous as the northernmost sake brewer in Japan, and Sake such as Kunimare (國稀) and Onikoroshi (鬼ころし) are sold.

Ofuyumisaki Observatory

Ofuyumisaki Observatory (雄冬岬展望台) was built in 1999 at Ofuyumisaki Ganseki Park (雄冬岬岩石公園) located in the southern part of Mashike town, and Cape Ofuyu is one of the three major secret capes with Cape Ochiishi (落石岬) and Cape Chikyu (地球岬) in Hokkaido. Cape Ofuyu was said "Inaccessible Land (陸の孤島)" before road is built, and it is known as a place surrounded by cliffs, so I am sure this observatory has good views on the such high place. I reached a parking lot after going around some hairpin curves. For some reason that is not clear, there are some tombstones beside the parking lot, and visitors can visit graves without walking. This is interesting. The parking lot has a restroom. Admission free. The parking lot is free of charge. Article is here

Shiragane Falls

Shiragane Falls (白銀の滝) are located in the northern part of Ishikari city along Japanese National Route 231 and was named as opening road memory in 1981. Wwater drops around 30 m into the sea, and the splash seemed to look silver in old days. By the way, Beware of Pit vipers. Admission free. A parking lot is free of charge. A restroom is built beside the parking lot, too. Article is here

There is 1 indoor bath at a public bathroom. The small tiled bathroom is reverse L-shaped. The indoor bath is set along large windows, and is the size that about 4 people can take a bath, and uses heated cold springs. The state that hot springs gush out with big sound from the bath is very interesting. Bathers can take a bath while looking at a splendid view of the Sea of Japan and Moshiri Island (茂尻島) through the windows. If it is fine weather, the beautiful sunset may be seen.

The open-air bath surrounded by rocks has an oceanview. Bathers can not enjoy the great view because of a blindfold fence while bathing, but the bathers can enjoy the sunset over the Sea of Japan while cooling heated body.
