[Ikushina Primeval Flower Garden in Shari] Beautiful View of Shiretoko Peninsula and Drift Ice Can Be Enjoyed at A Little-Known Tourist Attraction
Ikushina Primeval Flower Garden
Ikushina Primeval Flower Garden (以久科原生花園) is a nature garden facing the Sea of Okhotsk in Shari town located in the root of Shiretoko Peninsula (知床半島). The distance between Shari Station and here is about 4 km away. There are nothing around here in particular. The Ikushina means "A river through there" in Ainu language, and may pointo to Ikushina River (幾品川) near here. The primeval flower garden is a little bit unusual, and has 2 types of the nature garden, the sea side and the green belt side along the sea. In a summer, primeval flower and magnificent Shiretoko Mounain Range (知床連山) can be enjoyed, and the sea covered with drift ice can be viewed in a winter. Here is not famous, so few people visit. It may be said that here is a little-known tourist attraction. Admission free. A parking lot is free of charge, too. There are no facilities such as a restroom and a food stall.
Drift Ice Spots and Drift Ice Cruise
In Japan, Drift ice appears only from January to March, and can be enjoyed only along the Sea of Okhotsk and a part of Pacific Ocean. The sea is covered with the drift ice from the shoreline of Monbetsu to Shiretoko Peninsula, and it is amazing view! It may be said that you must see the amazing view once. Hokkaido has 3 towns called "Monbetsu", Monbetsu (紋別) along the sea of the Okhotsk, Date Monbetsu (伊達紋別) along the Pacific Ocean and Monbetsu (門別) along the Pacific Ocean. In those Monbetsu, a place to view the drift ice is the Monbetsu (紋別) along the sea of the Okhotsk, and the Monbetsu, Abashiri (網走), Koshimizu (小清水), Shari (斜里) and Rausu (羅臼) have some drift ice spots. Tourists can enjoy the drift ice on the shore, and also enjoy it as the drift ice cruise on the sea. Unfortunately, global warming cause decreasing the drift ice recently, but you may see wild animals such as Earless Seal and Steller's Sea-eagle on the drift ice if you are lucky. Read More
Road to Heaven (天に続く道), Shari Shuen Burial Mounds (斜里朱円周堤墓群) and Unabetsu Ski Ground (ウナベツスキー場) are relatively near here. By the way, a direct bus from Sapporo or New Chitose Airport to here does not run, but Eagle Liner (イーグルライナー) between the Shari and the Sapporo is in service. Because public transportation is not in service, visitors should come here by a rental car, an own car or a taxi. But Shari Bus (斜里バス) operates a sightseeing bus via the Road to Heaven only in a summer, and this bus is reservation-only.
Road to Heaven
Road to Heaven (天に続く道) is a straight road with about 28 km in total length in Shari town, and was named after stretching to the sky. There are 2 views, 18 km or 28 km on the internet. When I measure the distance on the Google Map, the total length of the straight road is 28 km, and the straight road from a starting point to National Route is 18 km. A view is comfortable in the daytime, and the view with the red sky is good in the sunset, too. The sunset cross the tip of the road may sometimes be seen from mid September to late September. Here was once a secret popular spot only for motorcycle riders, but a lot of tourists come at present. Read More

Ikushina Primeval Flower Garden in Summer and Winter
The Ikushina Primeval Flower Garden is completely different in the summer and the winter. In the summer, the land side is star, and the sea side is star in the winter.
Summer Ikushina Primeval Flower Garden
In the summer Summer Ikushina Primeval Flower Garden, plants grow thick on small sandy hills of 5-6 m height. The garden is horizontal, and visitors admire primeval flowers along a slim straight path with about 700 m in length. Dianthus Superbus, Rosa Rugosa and Siberian Lily are in full bloom from late June to mid July. Although it is a garden, people do not manage the garden, and the plants are at the mercy of the nature. After the flowers are bloom, I know which type of the flowers.
There is another path on the right side at the dead end of the path. A secret garden is covered with woods goahead. A tree tunnel and a narrow path are at the mercy of the nature. In addition, the state of collapsing primeval flower garden could be seen from the sea side. This side is at the mercy of the nature, too.

Winter Ikushina Primeval Flower Garden
In the winter Ikushina Primeval Flower Garden, there are only some footprints to the beach or the top of the small sandy hills. The Shiretoko Mountains Range with covered with snow can be seen on the sandy hills. But the drift ice on the sea is highlight. Visotrs can touch the drift ice on the sandy beach, too. But the drift ice is not close to the beach depending on weather or the wind direction, so Whether or not the drift ice can be enjoyed depends on luck and timing. When I visted here, the sky is clear, and wind is calm, too, so the sea like mirror surface was very fascinating view.
