[Buckwheat Noodles of Hokkaido] Various Types of Tasty Buckwheat Noodles Can Be Savored in The Largest Buckwheat Production in Japan

Buckwheat Noodles of Hokkaido

Hokkaido occupies about 40% of buckwheat production of Japan, and is the largest buckwheat production in the Japan, and Nagano prefecture, Ibaraki prefecture, Fukushima prefecture and so on follow the Hokkaido. The climate is cool in a summer, and a large temperature gap is great for good buckwheat, and the buckwheat production of the Hokkaido is increasing. Horokanai (幌加内), Fukagawa (深川) and Otoineppu (音威子府) are the 3 largest production places. Especially, the Horokanai is the best buckwheat production and the largest planted area in the Japan, and is well-known as a buckwheat town, and uses buckwheat fields as tourist attractions well. In Fukushima town, Sengen Soba Buckwheat Flowers Viewing Party (千軒そばの花鑑賞会) is held in buckwheat fields, and a fantastic conbination of the buckwheat fields and Matsumae Kagura (松前神楽) can be enjoyed.

Horokanai Buckwheat Fields

Horokanai town in the northwestern part of Asahikawa city is the best buckwheat town in Japan. Total buckwheat planted area is 3,200 ha, and the amount of buckwheat production is over 2,900 ton, and those are the largest area and production in the Japan. Its quality is the best grade in the Japan, too, and Horokanai Buckwheat Noodles (幌加内そば) has a good reputation. In a summer, the buckwheat fields are covered with white flowers, and I think that visitors are moved by the views. The best time to see is from late July to mid August. The Horokanai has 4 famous viewing spots, and white buckwheat flowers can be enjoyed at Soba-no-Hana Observation Deck (ソバの花展望台), Hakugin-no-Oka (Silver) Hills (白銀の丘), Junpaku-no-Oka(Snow-white) Hills (純白の丘) and Shirojutan-no-Hatake (白絨毯の畑 * Fields of the White Carpet). Each buckwheat noodles produced in various places of the Hokkaido are branded. In the Northern Hokkaido, Horokanai Buckwheat Noodles (幌加内そば), Etanbetsu Buckwheat Noodles (江丹別そば), Otoineppu Buckwheat Noodles (音威子府そば) and Hokugen Buckwheat Noodles (北厳そば) are famous. In the Central Hokkaido, Tadoshi Yama Buckwheat Noodles (多度志やまそば) and Urausu Botan Buckwheat Noodles (浦臼ぼたんそば) are well-known. Shiretoko Hikyo Buckwheat Noodles (知床秘境そば), Shintoku Buckwheat Noodles (新得そば), Shikaoi Buckwheat Noodles (鹿追そば), Mashu Buckwheat Noodles (摩周そば) and Nakashibetsu Yumemi Buckwheat Noodles (中標津夢見そば) in the Eastern Hokkaido and Sengen Buckwheat Noodles (千軒蕎麦) in the Southern Hokkaido are famous. A lot of those buckwheat noodles are well-known as high quality buckwheat noodles, and have a good reputation. Soba festivals are held in famous buckwheat productions. Hand-made soba Mansaku (手打ちそばまん作) is a popular buckwheat noodle restraunt founded in 2004 in Kamifurano town located in the south part of Asahikawa city, and is near Miharashidai Park (見晴台公園). Mr. Nobunari Hirayama (平山 信成) is a restraunt owner. He established the Mansaku after trining his cooking skill at buckwheat noodle restraunt in Sapporo. Marukatsu

Marukatsu (まるかつ) is a popular buckwheat noodles restraunt facing National Route 12 in Takikawa city, and is near Takikawa City Hall. The appearance and the interior decoration have a good old atmosphere of Showa period. The restraunt serves low price buckwheat noodles like stand-up-eating soba noodles, and their buckwheat noodles have been called “The comfort food of Takikawa people”. Sobadokoro Yoshinoya (そば処 吉野家) is a long-established buckwheat noodle restraunt founded in 1928 in Yubari city located in the eastern part of Sapporo city, and is near Yubari City Office. Mr. Kazuta Takahashi (高橋 一太) is a restraunt owner now. Speaking of Yoshinoya, the Yoshinoya is famous for a beef rice bowl (牛丼 * Gyudon), but this Yoshinoya in the Yubari is famous for Curry Soba (カレーそば). My friend also recommended me that you should eat the Curry Soba, I visited here around 11:30, just after opening hour. The restraunt has an atomosphere such as a typical good old buckwheat noodle restraunt. Counter seats, table seats and small separate Japanese style rooms are provided, so I guess that even family customers enjoy meals. Handmade Buckwheat Noodle Shop Kirin (手打ちそばの店希林) is a popular buckwheat noodles restaurant founded in 2008 in Iwamizawa city, and is near DCM Homac Iwamizawa Barnch. The Iwamizawa is famous for a barbecued chicken (焼き鳥) and roasted chicken giblets (もつ焼き), and those are local specialities in the Iwamizawa. The Kirin is also well-known for serving buckwheat noodles with the roasted chicken giblets (もつそば). In addition, the restaurant is also well-known as a place to be popular with motorcycle riders. It was usually a business start at 11:00. However, they started business at 11:30 at that day. 1 group of preceding visitors lined up in an entrance of the restaurant. Table seats and counter seats are provided, so I guess that even family customers can enjoy their meals. Soba-no-Sato Kyoan

Soba-no-Sato Kyoan (そばの里京庵) is a popular buckwheat noodles restaurant in Kaminoboribetsu-cho, Noboribetsu city. Mrs. Kyoko Ikeda is a restraunt owner. A solitary house is built in Shinnoboribetsu Onsen (新登別温泉). Few buildings are around the house, so I guess that you are surprised at the buckwheat noodles restaurant in such a place. The interior decoration has an atmosphere such as an ordinary private house. I took off my shoes, and entered here as if I felt visiting my friend’s house. By the way, visitors with children that are lower than a primary schoolchild may not enter here. Itasoba Namiki (板そば なみ喜) is a popular buckwheat noodles restaurant in Sapporo city. The head office is in Kita ward, and a branch restaurant is in Shinoro. The head office is located in the north side of Hokkaido University with large site. It takes about 20 minutes from a subway station on foot, so I guess that it may be inconvenient if visitors do not go there by a car. I heard from my friend that Chicken Tempura and Itasoba (鶏天と板そば) were tasty, and I visited here. The restraunt has an atomosphere such as a typical buckwheat noodles restarunt with a warmth of woods. Only the head office facing National Route 12, the longest straight road in Japan, opens a business now. Mr. Takeshi Watanabe (渡邊 猛) is a restraunt owner. He established the restraunt in 1998 in the Sapporo, and moved the restraunt from the Sapporo to the Eniwa in 2011. Tamagawaan (玉川庵) is a famous buckwheat noodles restraunt in Tottori, Kushiro city and is known for making oyster buckwheat noodles (牡蠣そば) for the first time, and they garnered one star in MICHELIN GUIDE Hokkaido 2012 Special Edition. Originally, an owner run a buckwheat noodles restraunt in Akkeshi that is famous for the oyster culture and would buy the oyster field in a different field accidentally. For 3 years, he seemed to discover a method to cook the oyster that had a muddy odor tasty with the buckwheat noodles. They moved to Kushiro, and approximately 40 years passed. Mr. Takanori Imai (今井 崇敬) is a current restaurant owner. The Shintoku is one of the most famous buckwheat production centers in Hokkaido, and it is well-known for supplying high quality buckwheat noodles called Shintoku Soba (新得そば). The Minatoya serve the Shintoku Soba. The restraunt has an atomosphere such as a typical buckwheat noodles restaurant. Counter seats, table seats and small separate Japanese style rooms are provided, so I guess that even family customers enjoy meals. Soba-no-Sato Bibairo (蕎麦の里びばいろ) is a popular buckwheat noodle restraunt in Memuro town located in the western part of Obihiro city. A solitarily restraunt is surrounded by fields, and visitors can feel Tokachi. The Soba-no-Sato Bibairo was once called “Visionary Buckwheat Noodles Restraunt (幻のそば店)” by buckwheat noodles evangelists, but it closed a business, and Mr. Katsuhiro Takeuchi (竹内 勝博), a current restraunt owner-chef, took over the restraunt, and reopened a business in 2005. Hachiemon (八右ヱ門) is a popular buckwheat noodle restraunt in Horokanai town located in the northwest part of Asahikawa city, and is near Horokanai Town Office. Mr. Kuniaki Suzuki (鈴木 國明) is a restraunt owner. Originally, he used to open a buckwheat noodle restraunt called “Karakiya (唐木屋)” in the Asahikawa, but he moved from the Asahikawa to the Horokanai in 2000’s. Yomogi (蓬) is a popular buckwheat noodle restraunt founded in 2005 in Higashikagura town located in the southeastern part of Asahikawa city, and is relatively near Asahikawa Airport. Mr. Koji Ishimori (石森 孝治) is a restraunt owner. He moved from Sapporo to the Higashikagura after retiring a heavy machinery manufacturer, and he has opened a business to make use of his hobby, Hand-made buckwheat noodles. They got the Bib Gourmand in MICHELIN GUIDE Hokkaido 2012 Special Edition and 2017 Special Edition, so I think that his life is amazing. Tokiwaken

Tokiwaken (常盤軒) is a popular buckwheat noodle restaurant founded in 1933 at Otoineppu Station (音威子府駅) in Otoineppu village. Mr. Mamoru Nishino (西野 守) is a restaurant owner. Rail fans say “The Tokiwaken serves the most tasty buckwheat noodle among all over the stations in Japan“. Their buckwheat noodle’s highlight is black color and strong chewy noodles made by Hatakeyama noodles factory (畠山製麺). I think that blcak buckwheat noodles are very rare. Seiichi is a popular buckwheat noodle restaurant founded in about 2006 at Horokanai Koryu Plaza in Horokanai town located in the northwest part of Asahikawa city. Mr. Seiichi Mizusaki (水崎 精一) is a restraunt owner. The restaurant is well-known for serving hand-made buckwheat noodles using buckwheat flour produced in the Horokanai, and a lot of people come. Hand-made Soba Ishikura (手打そば いしくら), Hand-made Soba Nagatsuki (手打ちそば 長月), Soba-no-Yakata Gabino (蕎麦の館がびの) in the Hakodate, Kobo Sobagoya (工房蕎麦小屋) in Nanae, Hand-made Soba Kita-no-Genan (手打そば処北の玄庵) in Mori, Hand-made Soba Ogura (手打ちそば おぐら) in Matsumae and Iseya Shokudo (伊勢屋食堂) in Yakumo are popular in particular. The Esashi is a supply place to transport herring used for Herring Buckwheat Noodles (にしんそば), a local speciality in Kyoto, in Edo period, and also has passed down the Herring Buckwheat Noodles. My visited buckwheat noodle restraunts are as follows.

Soba-Kura Yamagen

Sobakura Yamagen (そば蔵やまげん) is a popular buckwheat noodle restraunt founded in 1999 in Esashi town located in the northwestern part of Hakodate city, and is near North Pacific Bank Esashi Branch (北洋銀行 江差支店), and is relatively near Kamome Island (かもめ島). The restraunt got the Bib Gourmand in MICHELIN GUIDE Hokkaido 2012 Special Edition and 2017 Special Edition. They use 100 years over renovated storehouse as the restraunt, and it has a warmth of woods, and has an atomosphere such as a Japanese-style barbecue cooked in front of customers. Counter seats and table seats are provided, so I guess that even family customers enjoy meals. But a line may be expected in busy time. Article is here

Marumi Shokudo

Marumi Shokudo (まるみ食堂) is a long-established restaurant founded in 1958 in Yakumo town located in the northwestern part of Hakodate city, and is next to Yakumo Station. Marumi Shoji Ltd. runs it, and also run an accommodation at the same building. Mr. Naoki Shinohara (篠原 直樹) is a company president. The restraunt has an atomosphere such as a typical local restraunt with the warmth of woods. Counter seats, table seats and small separate Japanese style rooms are provided, so I guess that even family customers and a large number of customers enjoy meals. Article is here

Genkiya

Sobadokoro Genkiya (そば処元気屋) is a buckwheat noodles restaurant surrounded by fields in Kitahiyama, Setana town located in the southwestern part of Hakodate city. Shintaku Kogyo corp runs it, and has opened the restaurant since 1990’s. Mr. Tsutomu Nagata (長田 勉) is a company president. Thier building is a prefab house, but it has an atmosphere that seems to come across tasty dishes. Customers take off shoes at an entrance, and enter the restraunt. The restraunt is not so large, and counter seats and table seats are provided, so I guess that even family customers enjoy meals. Article is here
