Hokkaido 4 Major Zoos
Hokkaido has 4 major zoos, Asahiyama Zoo that is most popular zoo in the Hokkaido in Asahikawa city, Maruyama Zoo that is the oldest zoo in the Hokkaido in Sapporo city, Obihiro Zoo that an elephant is bred in Obihiro city and Kushiro Zoo that is the largest zoo by area in the Hokkaido in Kushiro city. Each zoos have a lot of ways of enjoying and interresting. Everybody can know differences if everybody go to all the zoos.
Asahiyama Zoo (旭山動物園物語) is a zoo in the eastern part of Asahikawa city, and is well-known as the northernmost zoo in Japan, and has the 4th largest visitors after Ueno Zoo (上野動物園), Higashiyama Zoo (東山動物園) and Tenoji Zoo (天王寺動物園) in the Japan, and about 1,400,000 people visit here. A lot of tourists come from oversea countries such as Hong Kong and Taiwan as well as all over the Japan, too. The Asahiyama Zoo originally used to be a loss-making zoo, but they changed ways of exhibitions. One is "Action exhibitions to show original wild life of animals", and other is "Mixed exhibitions to let animals of different types coexist in a near‐natural environment". "Asahiyama Zoo Story -Penguins fly in the sky- (旭山動物園物語 ペンギンが空を飛ぶ)" was broadcasted on a movie and a tv, and the Asahiyama Zoo became one of the most popular tourist attractions in Hokkaido. Maruyama Zoo (円山動物園) is a zoo built in 1951 in Maruyama Park (円山公園) located in the west part of Sapporo's downtown, and is the oldest zoo in Hokkaido, and is adjacent to Hokkaido Shrine (北海道神宮) and Maruyama Baseball Stadium (円山球場). About 800,000 people visit here, and is the 2nd popular zoo after Asahiyama Zoo (旭山動物園) in the Hokkaido. The Asahiyama Zoo is the most popular zoo in the Hokkaido at present, but the Maruyama zoo originally used to be the most popular zoo. Because they improve a way to display of animals, the Maruyama Zoo is planning to become more attractive zoo in future. 184 types of about 950 animals are bred in February 28, 2014. Article is here
Obihiro Zoo (帯広動物園) is a zoo in Midorigaoka Park (緑ヶ丘公園) located in the center of Obihiro city, and is the 2nd oldest zoo after Maruyama Zoo (円山動物園) in Hokkaido, and has opened a business since 1963. It is well-known as a zoo that established a method to breed tropical animals in the cold Hokkaido for the first time in Japan. About 73 kinds of 400 animals are bred at the Obihiro Zoo. In addition, there is an amusement park at the zoo, and Mini Steam Locomotion Benkeigo (弁慶号) goes around the amusement park. Strollers and wheelchairs are provided, too, and those are free rental. Kushiro Zoo (釧路動物園) is a zoo in Yamahana Park (山花公園) located in the west part of Kushiro's downtown, and is adjacent to Yamahana Onsen Rifre (山花温泉リフレ), Kushiro Fureai Horse Park (釧路市ふれあいホースパーク) and an auto campsite. It features a large site, and about 60 types of 450 animals are bred at the site of 47.8 ha. The Kushiro Zoo was established in 1975, and is the easternmost zoo in Japan. There are a sightseeing facility with wooden paths reproduced Kushiro-shitsugen Wetalnd and a amusement park at the zoo, too. In addition, there is Yamahana Graveyard (山花墓地) for some reason at the zoo, too. The Kushiro Zoo is an unusual zoo that there is a cemetery at the zoo in the Japan. Article is here
Other Zoos in Hokkaido
Except the 4 major zoos, there are 2 zoos in the Hokkaido. One is North Safari Sapporo (ノースサファリサッポロ) that is well-known as a dangerous zoo in the Sapporo. Another is Nakayoshi Zoo (なかよし動物園) in Kuriyama. In addition, some specialized zoos are dotted with the Hokkaido. As for a bear specialty zoo, Noboribetsu Bear Ranch (のぼりべつクマ牧場), Showashinzan Bear Ranch (昭和新山熊牧場) in Sobetsu, Sahoro Bear Mountain (サホロ・ベアマウンテン) in Shintoku and Daisetsuzan Bear Center (大雪山ベアーセンター) in Kamikawa are famous. A north fox specialty zoo is North Fox Ranch (北キツネ牧場) in Ktami, and a reindeer specialty zoo is Reindeer Ranch in Horonobe, and a ostrich specialty zoo is The 2nd Arishima Ostrich Ranch (第二有島だちょう牧場) in Niseko. As for a alpaca that can be enjoyed, Alpaca Ranch (アルパカ牧場) in Biei, Viva Alpaca Ranch (ビバアルパカ牧場) in Kenbuchi and Ecorin Village (えこりん村) in Eniwa are famous. Monkey Mountain is at Hakodate Tropical Botanical Garden (函館市熱帯植物園).
