Fall Foliage of Hokkaido

It is said that the Fall Foliage of the Hokkaido turns red at the earliest in Japan. The best time to see the fall foliage comes in Daisetsu-zan at high altitude, and it comes gradually in low areas. It comes in Mt. Asahidake (旭岳) and in Mt. Kurodake (黒岳) in mid September, and autumn leaves fall in early November. As for the highlight of the Fall Foliage of the Hokkaido, tourists are bowled over by vast nature with the fall foliage, or are bowled over by small space that goes well with the fall foliage. Except famous beauty spots for the fall foliage, there are less famous beauty spots for the fall foliage such usual mountains and rivers or gorgeshere and there.

Fall Foliage in Southern Hokkaido

The fall foliage around Hakodate city can be enjoyed until early November, the latest fall foliage season in Hokkaido. Onuma Quasi-National Park (大沼国定公園), Kosetsuen (香雪園), Esan (恵山), Daisanzaka Slope (大三坂), Goryokaku Fort (五稜郭公園), Sasanagare Dam (笹流ダム) and Unseki Pass (雲石峠) are known as the beauty spots for the fall foliage. I visited only the Lake Onuma to see the fall foliage, and it was fantastic!

Lake Onuma (大沼) is the largest lake in Onuma Quasi National Park, and is known as a beauty spot for fall foliage in Hokkaido, too. A combination of Mt. Komagadake (駒ヶ岳) and small islands with fall foliage floated on the surface of the Lake Onuma is very good. 4 trails, Oshima Trail (大島の路), Forest Trail (森の小径), Island Hopping Trail (島巡りの路) and Sunset Trail (夕日の道), are provided around Park Plaza (公園広場), and I have walked the Oshima Trail and the Island Hopping Trail on foot. Fall Foliage in Central Hokkaido

Central Hokkaido is the largest land in Hokkaido, and various situation from high mountains to the level ground can be enjoyed. The fall foliage season is different depending on various regions, and is relatively wide from late September to late October, too. Jozankei (定山渓), Hoheikyo (豊平峡), Sapporo International Ski Resort (札幌国際スキー場), Lined Gingko Trees with Fall Foliage in Hokkaido University (北海道大学イチョウ並木), Odori Park (大通公園), Maruyama Park (円山公園), Hiraoka Greenary Center (平岡樹芸センター), Asari Dam (朝里ダム), Nopporo Forest Park (野幌森林公園), Lake Shikotsu (支笏湖), Sankaidaki Park (三階滝公園), Lake Toya (洞爺湖), Noboribetsu Onsen Jigokudani (登別温泉地獄谷), Niseko Panorama Line (ニセコパノラマライン), Shinsennuma Pond (神仙沼), Lake Kasturazawa (桂沢湖), Blue Pond (青い池), Takinoue Park (滝の上公園), Hakusen Falls (白扇の滝), Goshiki Gorge (五色渓谷) are known as the beauty spots for the fall foliage. I visited the Jozankei, the Hoheikyo, the Hokkaido University, the Odori Park, the Hiraoka Greenary Center, the Noboribetsu Onsen Jigokudani, the Shinsennuma Pond and the Takinoue Park. Each situations go well with red leavles or yellow leaves, so those are very beautiful.

Fall Foliage around Jozankei

Jozankei (定山渓) is famous for Onsen, and is known as a good place for fall foliage, too. Leaves of trees turn its color along Toyohira River (豊平川) located in the central of Jozankei Onsen, and Futami Park (二見公園), Futami Tsuribashi Suspension Bridge (二見吊橋), Tsukimi Bridge (月見橋), Jozankei-ohashi Bridge (定山渓大橋), Nishiki Bridge (錦橋) and Shiraito Falls (白糸の滝) are famous for the fall foliage. Sapporo International Ski Resort (札幌国際スキー場), Jozankei Dam Karyuenchi (定山渓ダム下流園地), Lake Sapporo (さっぽろ湖) and Hoheikyo that are a little far away from the Jozankei Onsen are famous for the fall foliage, too. Fall Foliage around Hoheikyo

Hoheikyo is famous for beautiful fall foliage, too. The best time to see is from early October to mid October, so I visited here in mid October. The fall foliage was just full bloom, so a lot of tourists came. There were an electric bus stop and a restroom beside a parking lot, and those were crowded with a lot of tourists depending on time zone. It takes about 5 minutes by the electric bus. It took me about 20 minutes to go the Hoheikyo Dam on foot. Article is here

Jozankei Dam (定山渓ダム) is a a concrete gravity dam with about 117.5m in height in Jozankei located in the southwest part of Sapporo city, and is near Jozankei Onsen. It was mainly built for the purposes of securing drinking water and electric power in 1989, and Lake Sapporo (さっぽろ湖), a man-made lake, was born. A canoe can be enjoyed on the surface of the lake, and Rainbow Trout (ニジマス), Whitespotted Char (アメマス) and Ito Fish (イトウ) are caught in a summer, and Japanese Pond Smelt (ワカサギ) is caught in a winter. Odori Park is famous as a beauty spot for fall foliage, too. 92 types of 4700 trees such as cherry trees, Japanese zelkova trees, ginkgo trees and maple trees are planted. Not only tourists but also sapporo people feel like taking a photo, and a lot of people come to enjoy the fall foliage. The best time to see is from early October to mid October. Article is here

Lined Gingko Trees with Fall Foliage in Hokkaido University (北海道大学イチョウ並木) is a beauty spot for fall foliage near Sapporo Station. It takes about 1 minute from Sapporo Subway Namboku Line Kita 12 Jo Station (地下鉄南北線「北12条駅」) to here. The Hokkaido University is commonly called Hokudai (北大), and becomes popular nationwide. About 70 gingko trees are planted along a road with about 350 m in length from Kita 13jo Gate (北13条門) to a road running north-south. The gingko trees has planted since 1939, and Prior to that point, cherry trees and maple trees were planted. The best time to see is from late October to early November. Usually, a lot of tourists come to the Hokkaido University, and a lot of the tourists come particularly in this season. Admission free. Article is here

Hiraoka Greenary Center with Fall Foliage

Hiraoka Greenary Center (平岡樹芸センター) is a botanical park opend in 1984, and is commonly known as Midorimu (みどりーむ). Mr. Sanjiro Takezawa (竹澤三次郎) donate land with trees, and the park was developed. 100 kinds of trees, about ten thousand tress, such as 3000 Japanese Yew (イチイ) and 700-800 Mountain Maple Trees (ヤマモミジ), Nomura Maple Trees (ノムラモミジ) and Japanese Weeping Maple Trees (シダレモミジ) are planted on the site of about 3 ha. The park is famous as a beauty sopt for cherry blossom and fall foliage, too, and a lot of tourists and photographers come to take photos in cherry blossom season, from early June to mid June, and fall foliage season, from mid october to early November. Takinoue Park with Fall Foliage

Takinoue Park (滝の上公園) in Yubari city located in the southeast part of Sapporo city is known as a beauty spot for fall foliage. A valley eroded by Yubari River (夕張川) goes well with the fall foliage, especially, Chidorigataki Falls (千鳥ヶ滝) and Ryusenkyo Gorge (竜仙峡) are famous. The best time to see is from early October to mid October. In addition, Momiji Festival (紅葉まつり * Fall Foliage Festival) is held on Saturday and Sunday in mid October. There are Takinoue Power Plant (滝の上発電所), parking lots, a restroom and a shop around an entrance of the park. Admission free. The parking lots are free of charge. Article is here

Noboribetsu Onsen (登別温泉) is one of the largest hot spring resorts in Hokkaido, and is known as a beauty spot for fall foliage, too. Jigokudani (地獄谷) that has become a synonym for the Noboribetsu Onsen, Oyunuma Pond (大湯沼) and Mt. Hiyori (日和山), River Oyunuma Natural Footbath (大湯沼川足湯), 6 pathways such as Jigokudani Pathway (地獄谷遊歩道), Oyunuma Pathway (大湯沼遊歩道), Oyunuma 2nd Pathway (大湯沼第2遊歩道), Oyunuma Scenic Pathway (大湯沼川探勝歩道), Funamiyama Pathway (船見山遊歩道) and Funamiyama 2nd Pathway (船見山第2遊歩道) have the fall foliage in an autumn. A combination of sulfurous odour and the fall foliage can be enjoyed. The best time to see is from mid October to late October. Admission free. Beauty spots for the fall foliage in Northern Hokkaio are concentrated in Kamikawa. It is said that Daisetsu-zan (大雪山) turns red in mid September at the earliest in Japan, and it is said that Daisetsu Kogen Onsen (大雪高原温泉) is the most beautiful fall foliage in Japan, too, and there are a lot of the beauty spots for the fall foliage around Sokunkyo (層雲峡). Sounkyo (層雲峡), the Daisetsu Kogen Onsen, Ginsendai (銀泉台), Ryusei Falls and Ginga Falls (流星の滝と銀河の滝), Mt. Asahidake (旭岳), Kamuikotan (神居古潭), Lake Shumarinai (朱鞠内湖) and Otoineppu Gorge (音威子府渓谷) are known as the beauty spots for the fall foliage. I visited the Sounkyo, the Daisetsu Kogen Onsen, the Ginsendai, the Ryusei Falls and Ginga Falls, the Mt. Asahikdake and the Kamuikotan to enjoy the fall foliage. I think that the Daisetsu-zan with the fall foliage is too large-scale.

Sounkyo with Fall Foliage

Sounkyo (層雲峡) in Kamikawa town located in the southeastern part of Asahikawa city is a hot-spring resort as a famous fall foliage place. The whole area of Sounkyo is clothed in autumn leaves, and in particular a scenery from Mt. Kurodake (黒岳) is beautiful. A ropeway and a lift are installed from the hot-spring resort of Sounkyo Onsen (層雲峡温泉) to Mt. Kurodake. It is extremely appealing that tourists can reach to the fifth station on the Mt. Kurodake without climbing a mountain on foot. The tourists can look over a very splendid scenery from a high place. The fall foliage is the best season to see in mid September. The tourists will enjoy the splendid scenery of Mts. Daisetuzan (大雪山) called "The garden that gods have a good time (神々が遊ぶ庭)". By the way, the Mt. Kurodake changes to a ski resort in a winter, and Sounkyo Ice Waterfall Festival (層雲峡氷瀑まつり) is held in the winter, too. Admission free, but you want to ride a ropeway, must pay a fare. Kamikawa town is located in the southeastern part of Asahikawa city, and there is Daisetsu Kogen Onsen (大雪高原温泉) in the southern part of Kamikawa town. There is Brown Bear Information Center (ヒグマ情報センター) in the opposite side of the Daisetsu Kogen Onsen's building and this is an entrance of Daisetsu Kogen Onsen Hiking Tour (大雪高原温泉沼巡り). After having received a lecture about brown bears here, tourists can go a trip. This neighborhood is said to be a hometown of the brown bears, and many brown bears inhabit. Ginsendai with Fall Foliage

Ginsendai (銀泉台) in Kamikawa town located in the southeastern part of Asahikawa city is a trailhead for Mt. Akadake near Sounkyo Onsen (層雲峡温泉) in the southern part of Kamikawa town. If tourists take a narrow gravel road for about 14 km in length from Japan National Route 273 to Ginsendai, the tourists reach to the Ginsendai. But visitors must pay scrupulous attention to driving because large sightseeing buses run, too. Actually, I encountered a car with a trouble (A mobile phone is out of coverage area). In addition, traffic regulations enforce during high seasons of fall foliage, and the tourists must use shuttle buses from lake-side (レイクサイド) to the Ginsendai. There are a forest patrol office, a parking lot, a restroom and a watering place in the trailhead of the Ginsendai. Wild flowers are in full bloom in July, and the fall foliage is the best season to see in mid September. The tourists increase at those seasons. Article is here

Ryusei Falls (流星の滝) and Ginga Falls (銀河の滝) in Sounkyo (層雲峡), Kamikawa are famous waterfalls that rivers are dropping from columnar jointing of sheer cliffs into Ishikari River. It is said that those are the most beautiful falls in this area. Ryusei Falls with 90 m in high are called male falls (男滝) because water flows straight violently, and Ryusei means shooting star in English language. Ginga falls with 120 m in high are called female falls (女滝) because water flows delicately, and Ginga means milky way in English language. Admission free. A parking lot is free of charge. Mt. Asahidake with Fall Foliage

Mt. Asahidake (旭岳) is an active volcano in Higashikawa town located in the southeastern part of Asahikawa city and is the representative mountain and the highest mountain with 2,291 m in height of the Daisetsuzan Mountain Ranges (大雪山連峰). About 300,000 people visit Mt. Asahidake. There are 2 trailheads for the mountaintop of Mt. Asahidake and the Susoaidaira (裾合平), but it is the Asahidaira that tourists want to take in the sights without climbing mountains. Admission free, but you want to ride a ropeway, must pay a fare. In addition, you can climb a mountain free. There are a free parking lot and a toll parking, and the free parking is filling immediately during fall foliage season. Article is here

Kamuikotan with Fall Foliage

Kamuikotan (神居古潭) is a picturesque scenery in the suburbs of Asahikawa city. A combination of meandering and rocks is beautiful scenery. Originally this place is known as a sacred place for Ainu people, and Kamuikotan means "God lives" in Ainu language. Kamuikotan Ninne Kamui (カムイコタンニッネカムイ * violent and resistant god) lived here in Ainu period and watned to destroy the Ainu people once, but he was brought down by Samaikuru (サマイクル * guardian deity). Because there were a lot of strangely shaped rocks and mysterious stones and this was a difficult spot for crusing, Kamuikotan was called a village of violent and resistant god. A look of Kamui Bridge is very nice. There are the Kamui Bridge (神居大橋), Steam Locomotives, former Kamuikotan Station (旧神居古潭駅舎) and a monument in memory of Takeko Kujo (九条武子) in the site. Eastern Hokkaido is a vast land in Hokkaido, and a combination of nature and the fall foliage is very beautiful. Shiretoko Pass (知床峠), Mikuni Pass (三国峠), Lake Nukabira (糠平湖), Lake Kussharo (屈斜路湖), Lake Akan (阿寒湖), Lake Onneto (オンネトー), Lake Shikaribetsu (然別湖), Pyotan-no-Taki Falls (ピョウタンの滝), Iwanai Gorge (岩内仙峡), Lake Notoro (能取湖), Lake Saroma (サロマ湖) and Lake Komuke (コムケ湖) are known as the beauty spots for the fall foliage. I visited the Mikuni Pass, the Lake Kussharo, the Lake Akan, the Lake Onneto, the Lake Notoro, the Lake Saroma and the Lake Komuke to enjoy the fall foliage. A rare plant, Coral Grass Colony with the fall foliage, can be seen in the the Lake Notoro, the Lake Saroma and the Lake Komuke, and Large colonies of the Coral Grass Colony are grown only along the Sea of Okhotsk in the Eastern Hokkaido in Japan.

Mikuni Pass (三国峠) is the highest pass at 1139 m above sea level in Hokkaido in Kamishihoro located in the north part of Obihiro, and is on National Route 273 (Nukabira National Route (糠平国道)) that connects Kamikawa (上川) and Tokachi (十勝) and penetrates Daisetsuzan National Park (大雪山国立公園) in a north-south direction. There is not a house around the Mikuni Pass, a sea of trees such as Sakhalin Fir (トドマツ) and Yezo Spruce (エゾマツ) spreads over. Horoka Onsen (幌加温泉) and Nukabira Onsen (糠平温泉) are a little far away. The sea of the trees is famous for fall foliage, too. The best time to see is from mid September to early October. Article is here

Lake Onneto is known for seeing beautiful fall foliage, too. The combination of Mt. Meakan, Mt. Akanfuji and Lake Onneto is great, and the refrection of the fall foliage on the water of the lake is great, too. Views from Onneto Observation Deck and Onneto Campsite are great, and local people that happened to be there said "The best viewing place is a lakeside down from a parking lot between the Onneto Observation Deck and the Onneto Campsite". A magnificent view of Mt. Meakandake and Mt. Akanfuji surely is very good. The best time to see is from late September to mid October. Article is here

Akan Lakeside is famous for fall foliage, too. Especially, Takiguchi (滝口), Tsurumi Bridge (鶴見橋) and Lake Taro (太郎湖) are famous, and a combination of a stream and the fall foliage seems to be very good. But I have never visited. Fall Foliage around Lake Kussharo

Lake Kussharo is famous for fall foliage, too. The fall foliage in Wakoto Peninsula is beautiful, and the fall foliage along Hokkaido Route 52 Kussharo-Mashukohan Line is beautiful, too. But I have never seen those, so I want to visit to see those next time. The best time to see is from early October to mid October. Article is here

Ubaranai Coral Grass Colony (卯原内のアッケシソウ群生地) is located in the south side of Lake Notoro (能取湖) and is known as the largest coral grass colony in Japan. It was on the verge of extinction in the past, but it is recovered now, so lakeshore is covered with red coral grass in early September. There are a restraunt and a restroom at a site. Coral Grass Colony around Lake Saroma

Coral Grass (サンゴ草) is a rare plant growing wild only in a part of Hokkaido, Okayama prefecture and Kagawa prefecture in Japan. The height is about 30 cm. Tourists can see the coral grass around Lake Notori (能取湖), Lake Saroma (サロマ湖) and Lake Komuke (コムケ湖) in Hokkaido. Because it is very rare plant, tourists can not harvest it in Japan, but people seem to eat it as vegetables in Europe. It is usually green, but it turn red in a fall. Those colony looked like a red carpet, it became popular. Coral Grass is best viewed from mid september to early October. Admission free. A parking lot is free of charge. Lake Komuke and Coral Grass Colony

Lake Komuke (コムケ湖) is a brackish water lake in Monbetsu city located in the northwest part of Abashiri, and the perimeter is about 22.7 km, and almost 3 lakes are connected each other. Those are collectively called the Lake Komuke. Komuke means Bent Marsh in Ainu language. It is hardly become a sightseeing spot, and a beautiful scenery has been left in its natural state. The Lake Komuke is known as Coral Grass Colony (サンゴ草), too, so the lakeside tunes red in early September. It can be said a valuable place that the natural Coral Grass can be seen. Admission free.
