[Higureyama Observation Deck in Nanae] Beautiful Lake Onuma and Lake Konuma Can Be Enjoyed at Lookout
CONTENTS
Higureyama Observation Deck
Higureyama Observation Deck (日暮山展望台) is a lookout point in Nanae town located in the northern direction of Hakodate city. Mt. Komagadake (駒ヶ岳), Lake Onuma (大沼) and Lake Konuma can be viewed from the mountaintop of the Mt. Higure (日暮山) of 303 m elevation between the Lake Konuma, the 2nd largest lakes in Onuma Quasi-National Park, and Junainuma Swamp (蓴菜沼), the 3rd largest lake in the park. The lookout is well-known as a good place to savor a wonderful scenery, and the sea of clouds may be seen in the early morning, too. A poster of Seishun 18 Ticket (青春18きっぷ) used here as a shooting place. After all, a good picture can be taken here. A lookout, a parking lot and a public restroom are built at the site. Brown bears may appear, so beware of them. In addition, drive safely because a road to the mountaintop is a gravel road and the width of the road is only one car size. Admission free. The parking lot is free of charge.

Onuma Quasi-National Park
Onuma Quasi-National Park (大沼国定公園) is a quasi-national park at the foot of Mt. Komagatake (駒ヶ岳) in the southern part of Hokkaido, and is between Nanae town, Shikabe town and Mori town. Its area is 9,083 ha. The park has been designated as the quasi-national park since 1958, and 2 million tourists come. It consists of the Mt. Komagatake of 1,131 m elevation, an active volcano, Lake Ounma (大沼湖), Lake Konuma (小沼湖), Junsai Swamp (蓴菜沼), and beautiful scneries are highlights. The Onuma Quasi-National Park has been chosen as one of The 3 New Views of Japan (新日本三景) together with Miho-no-Matsubara (三保の松原) in Shizuoka prefecture and Yabakei (耶馬渓) in Oita prefecture since 1915. It is also famous for fall foliage, and has been chosen as one of The 100 Best Fall Foliage Spots in Japan (日本紅葉の名所100選). When the Mt. Komagatake erupted from 50,000 to 30,000 years ago, a river was dammed by flowing mud flood, and those lakes were created. Wetlands have been registered under the Ramsar Convention since 2012, and wild waterfowls such as Goose and Duck rest their wings on the surface of the lake. Read More

Look of Higureyama Observation Deck
The distance from the parking lot to the mountaintop is about 50 m away. Only benches are on the mountaintop, and an observation platform is not built. That place is surrounded by trees, and a view is open only at the east side. The Mt. Komagadake, the Lake Onuma, the Lake Konuma and golf courses of Hokkaido Country Club can be looked over if it is fine weather. A conbination of innumerable islands floating in the lakes and an artifactual iron bridge is photogenic.

Unfortunately, a view is bad because the Junasainuma Swamp direction at the west side is surrounded by trees. The mountain is named the Mt. Higure * The Higure means "The sunset" in English, so I completely thought here was a good place to see the sunset. But I could not enjoy it because of thick trees. According to my sources on internet, the mountain was named after a certain person viwed the scenery from the daytime to the sunset because of too beautifulness, so the mountain does not seem to be related to the beautiful sunset.

By the way, Club Tourism (クラブツーリズム), a Japanese tour travel agency, provides various types of tours such as day trip tours or ordinary tours. In the case of bus tours, tourists do not drive their cars themselves, so they can savor alcohol. Choosen tourist attractions are national parks such as Rishiri and Rebun, Shiretoko, and popular tourist places such as Furano and Biei, and some activities such as hiking and fruit picking are also enjoyed depending on seasons. If you are interested in tour trips, you should visit the club tourism's website for details.
