Hakodate (函館) that about 260,000 people live is the 3rd largest port city in Hokkaido, and is a regional hub city of the Southern Hokkaido area. The Hakodate became incorporated with Toi town (戸井), Esan town (恵山), Todohokke village (椴法華) and Minami-kayabe town (南茅部) in 2004, and most of Kameda Peninsula (亀田半島) has changed to the Hakodate. It is one of most popular tourist cities in the Hokkaido, and about 5 million people visit here. The downtown of the Hakodate from Mt. Hakodate toward former Goryokaku fort is developed on a large sandbar between the seas, and a unique seashore landscape is very popular. Although a lot of tourists think the center town of the Hakodate is around Hakodate Station and the Mt. Hakodate, it is around Hakodate Streetcar Goryokaku Koen-mae Stop (函館市電五稜郭公園前駅). The Hakodate is also well-known as a city with a lot of slopes, and there are 19 slopes with its name such as Hachiman-zaka slope (八幡坂), Daisan-zaka slope (大三坂) and Motoi-zaka slope (基坂), so around the Mt. Hakodate has a lot of slope lands, and the Hakodate has a lot of narrow roads. As for a climate, the Hakodate is wamer than other cities in the Hokkaido because it is located of the Southern Hokkaido, and it does not snow hard.
In the Hokkaido, the Hakodate is one of the oldest cities. Mr. Masamichi Kono (河野政通), a vassal of Mr. Masasue Ando (安東政季), built Usukeshi-Kono-kan (宇須岸河野館), a small fort, around Motomachi Park (元町公園) in 1454, and the shape of the building was like a box, so around the land was called "Hako-date". * The box means "Hako (箱)" and the building means "Yakata (館)" in Japanese, and the Yakata has some different readings such as the Yakata, the Kan, Tachi and Tate, so "Date" is a voiced sound. Edo Shogunate decided to open Hakodate Port together with Shimoda Port (下田港) in 1854, then the Hakodate energize exchanged with other countries. In the later Edo period, around the Hakodate turned into area under direct control of the shogun, and it used to be the political and diplomatic center of the Hokkaido.
Meiji Government (明治政府) came into existence, and the Hakodate (箱館) was renamed Hakodate (函館) for some reason in 1872. But it is thought that changing name is related to an ominous word and a fresh start. * It is said that Meiji Government renamed Osaka (大坂) to the Osaka (大阪) because the Saka (坂) is the ominous word. * A left-hand radical tsuchi-hen means soil or earth, and a right-hand radical han means returns, so ominous those mean returning to the earth. I am not sure if that is correct. But I think that the Meiji Government was necessary to be ranamed for social conditions just after the Meiji Restoration (明治維新). In the Meiji era, the Hakodate was active foreign trading port with China, and was prospered as doorways of the Hokkaido together with Otaru, so it was the largest city in the Hokkaido until around 1940.
Speaking of the Hakodate, a view from the Mt. Hakodate is famous. Especially, the night view from the Mt. Hakodate is one of the 3 best night views in the world together with Hong Kong in China and Napoli in Italy, and is also well-known as one of the 3 best night views in the Hokkaido together with Sapporo and the Otaru. One of some 3 best night views are recognized, so I wonder if tourists can imagine the beautiful night view.
The Hakodate has historical tourist attractions such as former Goryokaku Fort (五稜郭), Bay Area and Motomachi (元町) reflected Meiji High Collar and Taisho Roman, so those with a romantic atmosphere are popular with women and couples. Various types of religious facilities can have a look, and Motomachi Religious Area (元町宗教エリア), Temples town (寺町), Trappistine Convent (トラピスチヌ修道院) and Hakodate Foreign General Cemetery (外国人墓地) are famous. The Mt. Esan, a pair of sacred mountains together with Mt. Osorezan (恐山) across the Tsugaru Strait, is away from the downtown of the Hakodate, and non-daily life can be enjoyed.
The Hakodate is popular as shooting places because a scenery of the sea and the slopes are beautiful. A lot of Japanese movies, TV Drama series and TV commercial such as Japanese movie "P to JK (PとJK)", "The Light Shines Only There (そこのみにて光輝く)", "If Cats Disappeared from the World (世界から猫が消えたなら)", "Over Fence (オーバー・フェンス)", "Hakodate Coffee (函館珈琲)" and Japanese TV commercial "Charmy Green" are filmed here, and popular Anime such as "Love Live! Sunshine!!", "Noein - to your other self (ノエイン もうひとりの君へ)", "Shinkansen Henkei Robo Shinkalion (新幹線変形ロボ シンカリオン)", "Hidamari Sketch x Honeycomb (ひだまりスケッチ×ハニカム)" and "Bakuon! (ばくおん！)" are set in the Hakodate. So visiting the real-life locations are popular, too.
The Hakodate also has various types of hot springs, and fresh free flowing hot springs can be enjoyed at most of onsen places. Yunokawa Onsen (湯の川温泉) called a back room of the Hakodate (函館の奥座敷) is famous at the downtown of the Hakodate in particular, so it is easily accessible. Mizunashi-kaihin Onsen (水無海浜温泉) at the foot of the Mt. Esan is famous as a secret onsen, and is popular with overseas people, too. The eastern side of the Hakodate has some onsen such as Esan Onsen (恵山温泉) and Ofuna Onsen (大船温泉) as well as it.
Fishing ports face the sea of Japan and the Pacific ocean, and dishes using fresh seafood are famous. Especially, a squid is the most famous seafood in the Hakodate called "A town of the squid", and squid sashimi is well-known. In addition, snacks such as squid rice cracker (イカ煎餅) and Japanese sweets such as squid-shaped sweetened and jellied bean paste (いかようかん) are sold, too. Except foods, Hakodate Squid Dance (いか踊り * Ika Orodi) or Squid Alien (イカール星人 * Ikaaru-Seijin) use the squid as a motif. Hakodate Morning Market (函館朝市) is nearby the Hakodate Station, so souvenirs can be bought, and squid dishes and other fresh seafood can be eaten.
As for the ramen of the Hakodate, salt broth ramen is well-known by Japanese people. It is one of the 3 most famous ramen in the Hokkaido together with Sapporo Ramen and Asahikawa Ramen. Lucky Pierrot (ラッキーピエロ), Hasegawa Store (ハセガワストア) and Pastry Snaffle's (ペイストリースナッフルス) are one of most famous shops in the Hakodate, too, and a hamburger of the Lucky Pierrot, Yakitori-Bento (焼き鳥弁当) of the Hasegawa Store and Cheese Omelette Cake (チーズオムレット) of the Pastry Snaffle's have a lot of fans, and even overseas pople pay attention to those, too. Speaking of highly reputed restaurants in the Hakodate, L'oiseau par Matsunaga (ロワゾー・パー・マツナガ), enoteca La RICOLMA (エノテカ・ラ・リコルマ), Sushidokoro Minami (鮨処美な味), Tempura Tazawa (天ぷら 田ざわ) and Fumoto (冨茂登) are given 1-star by the Michelin Hokkaido, and Asari Head Office (阿佐利本店), Izakaya Choji (居酒屋 兆治), Unagidokoro Takahashi (うなぎ処 髙はし), Colz (コルツ), Sushidokoro Kihara (鮨処木はら), Soba Kura (蕎麦蔵), Soba Saisai Kuruha (蕎麦彩彩 久留葉), Tsunezushi (常寿し), Toritatsu (とり辰), BISTRO HAKU (ビストロ ハク) and Seiryuken (星龍軒) are given bib gourmand by the Michelin Hokkaido.
The Hakodate has much events, too. Hakodate Christmas Fantasy (はこだてクリスマスファンタジー) is held from December 1 to December 25, and Goryo-Hoshinoyume (五稜星の夢(ほしのゆめ) * dream of stars) and Hakodate Illumination (はこだてイルミネーションファンタジー) are held from December to February, and Esan Smooth Lumpsucker Festival (恵山ごっこまつり) is held only in a day, mid February, and Hakodate Offshore Winter Fireworks Display (函館海上冬花火) is held between 2days in early February. Then Cherry Blossom Festival (さくらまつり) is held from late April to mid May, and Hakodate Goryokaku Festival (箱館五稜郭祭) is held between 2days in mid May, and Esan Azalea Festival (恵山つつじまつり) is held from late May to early June, and Minamikayabe Hirome Boat Festival (南かやべひろめ舟祭り) is held only in a day, early June, and Hakodate Marathon (函館マラソン) is held only in a day, early July, and Hakodate Port Fireworks Display (函館港花火大会) is held only in a day, mid July, and Takadaya Kahei Festival (高田屋嘉兵衛まつり) is held only in a day, mid August, and Hakodate Port Festival (函館港まつり) is held from August 1 to August 5, and Hakodate World Music and Dance Festival (はこだて国際民俗芸術祭) is held between 7days in early August, and Yunokawa Onsen Fireworks Display (湯の川温泉花火大会) is held only in a day, mid August, and Hakodate Hachiman Shrine Festival (函館八幡宮例大祭) is held between 2days in mid August, and Hakodate Gourmet Circus (はこだてグルメサーカス) is held between 2days in early September, and Hakodate MOMI-G Festa (はこだてMOMI-Gフェスタ) is held from mid October to early November.
Why is Hakodate famous? I think that it has 4 reasons. The first reason is that the night view from the Mt. Hakodate is one of the highest quality night views in the world, and the second reason is the old history and the internationality, and the third reason is that tasty foods such as seafood can be savored, and the fourth reason is that there are various types of onsen. Everybody will be convinced why Hakodate is famous if everybody visit the Hakodate.
By the way, Express Hakodate-go (高速はこだて号) and Hakodate Limited Express New Star-go (函館特急ニュースター号), express buses, run between Sapporo and the Hakodate. Unfortunately, the express bus does not run between New Chitose Airport and the Hakodate. Besides, Rent-a-car can be rented around Hakodate Station, Hakodate Airport, the Goryokaku Fort and Hakodate Ferry Terminal.

List of Historical Tourist Attractions
Hokkaido was called "Yezochi (蝦夷地)" until about 100 years ago, and Ainu people lived there. Very few Japanese people called "Wajin (和人)" lived in Matsumae, Esashi and the Hakodate located in the southern part of Oshima Peninsula. The Hakodate used to be called "Usukeshi (宇須岸)", and the Wajin began a settlement from Akita in the 1400s. They built 12 small forts called Southern Hokkaido 12 buildings (道南十二館) for trade with the Ainu people. As one of the 12 buildings, they built Usukeshi-yakata at this land, and the Hakodate was named after its shape of the building (Square building), and name of this land was named the Hakodate, too.
The Hakodate used to prospere as a trade port of Matsumae Domain (松前藩) and the hub port of cargo ships sailed the sea of Japan (北前船) in the Edo period. Western powers such as Russia or United States demanded the opening of Japan to Edo Shogunate in the late Tokugawa period. They accepted this demand, and the ports of theHakodate and Shimoda (下田) were opened. The Hakodate grew up as the full-scale international free trade port in 1859, and British consulate (French consulate), Russian consulate, China consulate were built. In the Meiji period, Orthodox Church (ハリストス正教会), Motomachi Roman Catholic Church (元町カトリック教会), Trappistine Convent (トラピスチヌ修道院), Episcopal Church (正ヨハネ教会) were built when Christianity was allowed, and the cityscape was built under the influence of Western culture greatly. The Hakodate is one of the oldest city that have been developed seriously since about 1850 in the hokkaido. The taste has been an impact on the Hakodate. My visited places are as follows.

Cape Tachimachi (立待岬) is a scenic spot at the foot of Mt. Hakodate (函館山) in the south part of Hakodate city, and visitors can view the Pacific on cliffs. Tachimachi was called "Yokoushi (ヨコウシ)" by Ainu people, and means "A place that the Ainu people wait to watch fishes while standing" in Ainu language. * Tachi (立) means standing and machi (待) means waiting in Japanese. Because the cliffs with about 30 m in height are steep, I think they imperiled themselves lay their life on the line put their life before fishing, and maybe men of other days were very tough. The cliffs have a good view, so the cape is sometimes used as a shooting place for suspense dramas. A song of "Cape Tachimachi" sung by Ms. Masako Mori (森昌子), a Japanese famous enka singer, uses here as a motif. Admission free. A parking lot is free of charge. Read More

As a beginning of Hokkaido series starting maiden races, horse races are held about from June to August. Admission fee is JPY 100. A toll parking lot is JPY 1000. The shrine has been reported Sumiyoshi Shrine founded in the Kamakura period. I think that Sumiyoshi(住三吉) Shrine is odd name, and Sumiyoshi(住三吉) Shrine merged Sumiyoshi(住吉) Shrine with Miyoshi(三吉) Shrine. The name of Sumiyoshi(住三吉) Shrine is a good combination. It is famous as a good place to see cherry blossoms, and the best time to see is from late April to early May. Admission free. A parking lot and a restroom are not provided. Read More

By the way, Club Tourism (クラブツーリズム), a Japanese tour travel agency, provides various types of tours such as day trip tours or ordinary tours.
