- List of accommodations
Goryokaku Park (五稜郭公園) is a fromer fort in the center of Hakodate city located in the northeastern direction of Hakodate Station, and is well-known as the Japan's first Western-style fort built in 1866, and is one of only 2 pentagon forts in the Japan together with Tatsuoka Castle (龍岡城) in Nagano prefecture. The Goryokaku is also famous as the last place that the former Tokugawa Shogunate Army fought with the new government during the Boshin War (戊辰戦争), and is open to general public at present, and a lot of tourists come. The Goryokaku Park is one of great places to see cherry blossoms in Hokkaido, and the cherry blossoms are in full bloom from late April to mid May, and a lot of tourists from all over the Japan or overseas tourists come to savor. In an autumn, leaves of the cherry trees turn into red color, and the park is well-known as a good place to see the fall foliage, too. Admission free. A parking lot is not provided.
Goryokaku Tower (五稜郭タワー展望台) with about 100 m in height is built at the out of the former Goryokaku Fort, and is a landmark of the Hakodate. Around the top of the tower has 2 observation floors, 1st observation floor and 2nd observation floor, and the views are very good, and those have a bird's-eye view of the former Goryokaku Fort in four seasons, daytime and early evening. Mt. Hakodate (函館山) and the downtown of the Hakodate as well as the Goryokaku Park can be viewed, too. Admission fee is JPY 900. Atrium is built at the foot of the Goryokaku Tower, and it has a souvenir shop, resting places, an event space and restaurants. Admission free.
There are Hakodate Magistrate's Office (箱館奉行所), Provisions Warehouse (兵糧庫), a cannon, a shop and Wisteria Trellis (藤棚) at the park, and the Hakodate Magistrate's Office is available to enter for fee. Admission fee is JPY 500. The building in the center of the Goryokaku Park was built to truly depict the Hakodate Magistrate's Office of those times in 2010. As for the event, Hakodate Goryokaku Festival (箱館五稜郭祭) is held between 2days in mid May.
Hakodate City Northern Pacific Fishery's Document Museum (函館市北洋資料館), Hokkaido Hakodate Museum of Art (北海道立函館美術館) and Hakodate City Central Library (函館市中央図書館) are close to the park, and a lot of restaurants are built around here. I visited Ajisai Head Office (麺厨房あじさい 本店), and salt broth ramen was tasty.
Ajisai Head Office
Hakodate Noodles Studio Ajisai (函館麺厨房あじさい本店) is a popular ramen restaurant in Hakodate city, and is a long-established ramen restaurant of Hakodate ramen founded in 1930. There is a building near Goryokaku Park. There is a branch in Sapporo city, but the head office is very popular, so I visited here around 17:00 on weekdays. The building looks stylish, there is a cafe on the first floor and is the ramen restraunt on the second floor. The ramen restraunt has a stylish atomosphere, and interior decoration resembles a trendy shop in Shibuya or Ebisu. There are some tables and family customers seem to enjoy. Read More
By the way, Express Hakodate-go (高速はこだて号) and Hakodate Limited Express New Star-go (函館特急ニュースター号), express buses, run between Sapporo and the Hakodate. Unfortunately, the express bus does not run between New Chitose Airport and the Hakodate. Besides, Rent-a-car can be rented around Hakodate Station, Hakodate Airport, the Goryokaku Fort and Hakodate Ferry Terminal.
Hakodate (函館) that about 260,000 people live is the 3rd largest port city in Hokkaido, and is a regional hub city of the Southern Hokkaido area. The Hakodate became incorporated with Toi town (戸井), Esan town (恵山), Todohokke village (椴法華) and Minami-kayabe town (南茅部) in 2004, and most of Kameda Peninsula (亀田半島) has changed to the Hakodate. It is one of most popular tourist cities in the Hokkaido, and about 5 million people visit here. The downtown of the Hakodate from Mt. Hakodate toward former Goryokaku fort is developed on a large sandbar between the seas, and a unique seashore landscape is very popular. Although a lot of tourists think the center town of the Hakodate is around Hakodate Station and the Mt. Hakodate, it is around Hakodate Streetcar Goryokaku Koen-mae Stop (函館市電五稜郭公園前駅). The Hakodate is also well-known as a city with a lot of slopes, and there are 19 slopes with its name such as Hachiman-zaka slope (八幡坂), Daisan-zaka slope (大三坂) and Motoi-zaka slope (基坂), so around the Mt. Hakodate has a lot of slope lands, and the Hakodate has a lot of narrow roads. As for a climate, the Hakodate is wamer than other cities in the Hokkaido because it is located of the Southern Hokkaido, and it does not snow hard. Read More

Cherry Blossoms at Goryokaku Park
About 1,600 cherry trees such as Yoshino cherry tree (ソメイヨシノ) are planted at the Goryokaku Park. The cherry blossoms from the Goryokaku Tower looks like pentagram decorated with the cherry blossoms, and I feel as if it is a diorama. On the other hand, the cherry blossoms on the ground are seen in every detail, and the differences of viewpoints can be enjoyed. A lots of low cherry blossoms grow on banks, and the cherry blossoms are enjoyed from lower eyesight. There are a lot of photogenic places such as a moat, and I understand that the Goryokaku Park is one of great places to see cherry blossoms in the Hokkaido.

By the way, Club Tourism (クラブツーリズム), a Japanese tour travel agency, provides various types of tours such as day trip tours or ordinary tours. In the case of bus tours, tourists do not drive their cars themselves, so they can savor alcohol. Choosen tourist attractions are national parks such as Rishiri and Rebun, Shiretoko, and popular tourist places such as Furano and Biei, and some activities such as hiking and fruit picking are also enjoyed depending on seasons. If you are interested in tour trips, you should visit the club tourism's website for details.
