[Gamushi Onsen in Assabu] Day Trip Bath Can Be Enjoyed at Gamushi Onsen Ryokan
Gamushi Onsen (俄虫温泉) is a hot spring place in Assabu town located in the northwestern direction of Hakodate city. Gamushi Onsen Ryokan (俄虫温泉旅館) is surrounded by fields. It takes about 10 minutes from the center of the Assabu by car. Visitors turn along Hokkaido Road 67 (北海道道道67号), and go straight a little, and around the end of the road is the Gamushi Onsen. Unfortunately, restraunts, cafes, cafes, souvenir shops and convenience stores are not built around there. Gamushi (ガムシ) is a place name, and means "Place that a lot of bears live" in Ainu language. In that kind of meaning, this place was indeed terrible. By the way, Kamisato Onsen (上里温泉) renewed in 2017 is next to the Gamushi Onsen Ryokan.
Tourist attractions relatively near here are Taikoyama Park (太鼓山公園), Ruins of Tate Castle (館城跡), Kamome Island (鴎島) and Kaiyomaru Battleship (開陽丸). The Assabu is well-known for May Queen, and it is the first land that the May Queen born in England was cultivated in Hokkaido, so there is a hands-on agricultural farm for digging potatoes.
Ruins of Tate Castle
Tate Castle (舘城) is castle ruins on a small hill in Assabu town located in the northwestern direction of Hakodate city, and is surrounded by fields. The castle is the last castle of Matsumae clan (松前氏), a daimyo of Matsumae Domain (松前藩), in the Edo period, and it is said that the castle is the last Japanese style castle in Japan. In the Meiji Restoration (明治維新), it was attacked by the old Shogunate forces, and the castle was fallen for 75 days after construction. Now the castle is not built. A parking space is along a road, and cherry trees are planted at the site, and there is no sightseeing facility in particular except a very small museum. Tatejo-ato Festival (館城跡まつり) is held on the second Sunday in June, and visitors can enjoy the stage of Hakodate war. Admission free. The parking space is free of charge. Read More
Kamome Island (かもめ島) is a land-tied island in the Esashi town located in the northwestern direction of Hakodate city, and its elevation is about 20 m, and its circumference is about 2.6 km. The island was named after its shape resembled a gull from the top * The Kamome means "A gull" in English. But the island used to be called "Benten Island (弁天島)" in Edo period, and used to be used as a port of Kitamae-bune (北前船 * cargo ships sailed the Japan Sea during the Edo period), and ruins of moored Kitamae-bune (北前船係留跡) in old days has been left now. A battleship "Kaiyomaru (開陽丸)" of the Tokugawa Shogunate sank off the Esashi is restored, and is displayed near the Kamome Island. Admission fee is JPY 500. Ebisu Bathing Beach (えびす浜海水浴場), Pullato Esashi (ぷらっと江差) and Esashi Port Marina (江差港マリーナ) are built near the island. Admission free. A parking lot is free of charge. Read More

Visitors can take a day trip bath at the Gamushi Onsen Ryokan.
Gamushi Onsen Ryokan
Gamushi Onsen Ryokan is a small-sized onsen ryokan founded in 1976. A building has an old atomosphere of Showa period. An entrance fee to the bath facility is JPY 400. A bedrock bath and chartered baths are provided, too, and an entrance fee to the bedrock bath is JPY 1000, and an entrance fee to the chartered bath with an outdoor bath is JPY 1800 per 60 minutes, and an entrance fee to the chartered bath without the outdoor bath is JPY 1500 per 60 minutes. Restraunt Etsu (レストラン悦) is at the building, too, and visitors for day trip bath can use the restraunt. A staying is possible, too.
There are 1 outdoor bath, 1 indoor bath, 1 whirlpool bath, 1 outdoor cold bath and 1 sauna at a large public bathhouse. The sunny bathhouse with large windows is feeling good, and its atmosphere goes well with white tiles, and has a feeling of cleanliness.
The indoor bath is the size that about 15 people can take a bath, and hot springs overflow from the bath. Yield of hot springs are small, so those are not fresh free flowing hot springs unfortunately. The whirlpool bath is the size that about 3 people can take a bath, and is more cold than the indoor bath.
The Japanese garden-style outdoor bath made of rocks is the size that about 5 people can take a bath, and a cascading bath is provided on the top, too. A roof is covered with a reed blind as a sunshade, and there are a small yard, a sauna hut and the cold bath around the outdoor bath, so a sense of openness can be not felt. Foot massage stones are set on the bottom of the outdoor bath, too.
The hot springs are simple hot spring, and are clear and colorless and have tasteless and no smell. The sum total of the hot spring ingredients are 0.121 g/kg. Unfortunately, the hot springs are not drinkable because of chlorine sterilization. All the baths use heated hot springs with adding water. Soaps are provided at the bathhouse. The bathers must bring a shampoo and a body soap. A restroom and a paid hair dryer are installed at a dressing room.
