Former Hokkaido Government Office
Former Hokkaido Government Office (北海道道庁旧本庁舎) is a historical building in Chuo ward, Sapporo city, and is located in the downtown of the Sapporo, so it also is close to Sapporo Station and Odori Park (大通公園). Current Hokkaido Government Office is adjacent to the Former Hokkaido Government Office. Its common name is "Akarenga (赤レンガ * Red Bricks)" by Hokkaido people, and it was built as a neo-baroque style building using a lot of red bricks in 1888, and has been designated as a national important cultural property. A designer is Mr. Seijiro Hirai (平井晴二郎). The Bureau of Hokkaido Development used to be established here, and has been the center of the Hokkaido politics since the old days. The Current Hokkaido Government Office, North Pond and South Pond are built at the site, too. Here is a peaceful place for Sapporo citizens, too, and about 650,000 tourists come to a popular tourist attraction. The Former Hokkaido Government Office is famous as a popular photo spot because of photogenic appearance. Admission free. A parking lot is not provided. * The building is planning to close to renewal in Octorber 2019.
The appearance with outstanding red bricks goes well with sceneries of four seasons. Tourists can enjoy colorful sceneries such as cherry blossoms in a spring, green plants in a summer, fall foliage in an autumn and snow in a winiter. The building is lit up in the early evening. Besides, various events such as a street performing are held, too. In the winter, projection mappings was sometimes projected onto the appearance of the building.
In front of the front gate of the Former Hokkaido Government Office, Sapporo Kita 3-Jo Plaza (北3条広場) as well as Akarenga Terrace (赤れんがテラス) and NOASIS 3.4 (ノアシス3.4) are built, and a lot of tourists come. Various events such as Sapporo Yuki Terrace (さっぽろユキテラス) are held at the Sapporo Kita 3-Jo Plaza. Especially, Leaves of lined ginkgo trees turn into beautiful yellow color in the autumn. In the winiter, illuminations of the lined ginkgo trees are also beautiful.
Sapporo (札幌) that about 1,960,000 people live is the largest city in Hokkaido. Although there are various theories, its origin of the name is "Dry Big River (乾いた大きな川)" in Ainu language. A population of the Sapporo is the 4th largest city after Yokohama, Osaka and Nagoya in japan, and the population accounts for 36 % of Hokkaido's population! So the Sapporo has been flourished as the center of the Hokkaido. The area of the Sapporo is 1,121.26 km2, and is about as big as Hong Kong, and is the 7th largest city in the Hokkaido. The Sapporo is also famous as a tourist city, and about 15 million people come. As for a climate, it is hot that temperature rises to nearly 25 degrees in a summer, but it is easy to live without moisture. I always feel a little cool. It is cold that temperature falls to nearly -10 degrees in a winter, and amount of snowfall sometimes has more than 1 m. Read More
Look of Former Hokkaido Government Office
The Former Hokkaido Government Office is two-story building with a basement, and the height is 33 m. It opens to the public only on the 1st floor and the 2nd floor. The Archives of Hokkaido (北海道立文章館) and a restroom are on the 1st floor, and Commemorative Room (記念室), “AKARENGA” Branch of Hokkaido Museum (北海道博物館 赤レンガサテライト), Karafuto/Sakhalin Related Resources Library (樺太関係資料館), The Red Brick Northern Territories Museum (赤レンガ北方領土館), Exhibition Room of Hokkaido's International Exchanges and Local Products (国際交流・道産品展示室), Tourism Information (観光情報コーナー), a restroom and meeting rooms are on the 2nd floor. Red central staircase welcome to visitors at the front entrance. Three-section arch supporting the ceilling is famous, and red carpets set off cream three-section arch. A wedding photo seems to be taken on the staircase, too. The building is not very large, so I suppose that it takes about 30 minutes to look around on foot.
The Commemorative Room is the highlight of the inside. Successive governors used to worke at this room. A door and windows are more fine than other rooms because the room is for person in a high position. Photos or pitures of the successive governors are hanging on the walls, too. Visitors can feel an atmosphere of those days. Rain stain on the wall is too bad, so I hope that it is repaired because of renovation.
At the Exhibition Room of Hokkaido's International Exchanges and Local Products, various local products produced in Hokkaido are displayed, and various informations of the Hokkaido are offered at the Tourism Information.
At the Karafuto/Sakhalin Related Resources Library, South Sakhalin closely connected with the Hokkaido is introduced.
At the AKARENGA Branch of Hokkaido Museum, nature, history and culture of the Hokkaido are introduced.

By the way, Club Tourism (クラブツーリズム), a Japanese tour travel agency, provides various types of tours such as day trip tours or ordinary tours. In the case of bus tours, tourists do not drive their cars themselves, so they can savor alcohol. Choosen tourist attractions are national parks such as Rishiri and Rebun, Shiretoko, and popular tourist places such as Furano and Biei, and some activities such as hiking and fruit picking are also enjoyed depending on seasons. If you are interested in tour trips, you should visit the club tourism's website for details.
