Flax Flowers (亜麻の花) bloom in late June in Tobetsu town located in the northeastern direction of Sapporo city. The Tobetsu is a main producing district of the Flax in Japan, and tourists can see the Flax Flowers at the outside of the flax fields. The best time to see is from late June to mid July. The Flax Flowers bloom only in the forenoon, and the bloomed Flax Flowers are scattered just in a day. Lovely small light blue flowers make me even feel melancholy, too. But I guess that the flaxes are the strong life force because a nyriad of the Flax Flowers bloom everyday. By the way, a parking lot is not provided at each fields.

Flax Flower Fields
Hokkaido Flax Festival is held from 07:00 to 13:00 in early July, and the time is just blooming Flax Flowers. By the way, there are some flax fields to see in the Tobetsu, but the flax fields are changed every year, so the flax fields are a little hard to find. I found 3 flax fields in 4 flax fields when I visited the Tobetsu in July 12, 2017. A mark is a flag written "Flax Field (亜麻畑)". In addition, different numbers of the flags stand depending on the flax fields. I guess that numbers of the flags mean a grade of the best time to see.
In the Japan, only the Hokkaido with cool climate is suitable for growth of the flax. The flax are cultivated in the Tobetsu, Date and Assabu, around the Tobetsu. Cool climate regions such as France, Belgium, Netherlands, Russia and Canada are main producing districts of the Flax in the world, so the southern land of the Hokkaido with a lot of humidity is not suitable for the growth of the flax. The Flax is raw materials of linen used for clothers and towels or linseed oil. In addition, Flax seeds are edible, and are good for you.
