[Daisetsuzan National Park] Tourist Attractions, Fall Foliage, Hiking, Onsen Can Be Enjoyed in Japan's Largest National Park

I introduce about the Omote Daisetu Area and the North Daisetsu Area on the first page, and introduce about the East Daisetsu Area and the Tokachirenpo Area on the second page.

East Daisetsu Area (Back Daisetsu Area)

Shintoku town (新得), Shikaoi town (鹿追), Kamishihoro town (上士幌) are called East Daisetsu Area roughly. Famous mountains are Mt. Otofukeyama (音更山), Mt. Ishikaridake (石狩岳), Mt. Mikuniyama (三国山), Mt. Nipesotsuyama (ニペソツ山), Mt. Upepesankeyama (ウペペサンケ山), Mt. Nishi-kumaneshiridake (西クマネシリ岳), Mt. Higashi-Nupukaushinupuri (東ヌプカウシヌプリ) and Mt. Nihsi-Nupukaushinupuri (西ヌプカウシヌプリ). Famous tourist attractions are Lake Shikaribetsu (然別湖), Lake Nukabira (糠平湖), Taushubetsu River Bridge (タウシュベツ川橋梁), Mikuni Pass (三国峠), Shikaribetsu Kohan Onsen (然別湖畔温泉), Shikaribetsukyo Onsen (然別峡温泉), Nukabira Onsen (糠平温泉), Horoka Onsen (幌加温泉), Kanno Onsen (かんの温泉), Tomuraushi Onsen (トムラウシ温泉) and Osoushi Onsen (オソウシ温泉).

Lake Shikaribetsu

Lake Shikaribetsu is a freshwater lake at 804 m above sea level, the highest lake in Hokkaido, between Shikaoi town and Kamishihoro town located in the north part of Obihiro city, and is well-known for enjoying the beautiful starry sky. In the Eastern Daisetsu Area (東大雪エリア), Daisetsuzan National Park, this lake is also the only natural lake in the Daisetsuzan National Park. The perimeter of the lake is about 13.8 km. The maximum water depth is 98.5 m. The lake water is very clear, and it is said that the lake is the 2nd clearest lake after Lake Mashu in Japan or the clearest lake in the Japan, and there are various opinions about clear lake water. After all, the lake has very clear lake water. It is also well-known for the only lake that Miyabe Charr (ミヤベイワナ), "Dolly Varden Trout (オショロコマ)" that was confined in the lake evolves, inhabits. Lake Nukabira

Lake Nukabira (糠平湖) in Kamishihoro town located in the north part of Obihiro city is the 2nd largest man-made lake after Lake Shumarinai (朱鞠内湖) in Hokkaido. In the Eastern Daisetsu Area (東大雪エリア), Daisetsuzan National Park, the lake was born by completion of Nukabira Dam (糠平ダム) in 1956. The perimeter of the lake is about 34 km. The maximum water depth is 75 m. The Nukabira means a human-shaped rock in Ainu language. When the Nukabira Dam was completed in 1955, the rock has been flooded in the lake. Nukabira Hot-spring Resort (糠平温泉) is in the southwest side of the Lake Nukabira. Higashi-taisetsu Nature Center (東大雪自然館) is built in the hot-spring resort, and visitors can gather information about the Lake Nukabira. In addition, Horoka Onsen (幌加温泉) is near the Lake Nukabira. Speaking of the Lake Nukabira, old bridges are famous. About 13 bridges such as Taushubetsu River Bridge (タウシュベツ川橋梁) used as former railroad track bridge still have been built, and it becomes popular tourist attractions because a state that is in harmony with landscapes is beautiful. Naitai Highland Farm

The Naitai Highlands Farm is the second largest public farm in the Japan, and is a special ranch of raising only the milk cow, too. Tourists can enter the farm, and Monument of Gratitude for Domestic Animal (家畜感謝の碑), an opne space, the Naitai Highlands Resthouse, Bokujo-no-Eki (牧場の駅), a restroom and the parking lot are built at about 800 m above sea level. If it is fine weather, Tokachi plain can be seen from the parking lot or the open space, and visitors can realize Hokkaido's vast lands. 150,000 tourists come to see the scenery. A conbination of green color and blue color is comfortable. Even in a summer, it is not too hot and a pleasant breeze blows because of the highlands. It is said that a sea of clouds is very impressive, too. A meal or a soft serve ice cream used for milk of the Naitai Highlands Farm cows are served at the Naitai Highlands Resthouse, and the tourists can taste thick milk. * A log house of the Naitai Highlands Resthouse was destroyed by a typhoon in 2016, so temporary shops are built at present. Mikuni Pass

Mikuni Pass (三国峠) in Kamishihoro located in the north part of Obihiro is the highest pass at 1,139 m above sea level in Hokkaido, and is on National Route 273 (Nukabira National Route (糠平国道)) that connects Kamikawa (上川) with Tokachi (十勝), and penetrates Daisetsuzan National Park (大雪山国立公園) in the north-south direction. There is no house around the Mikuni Pass, a sea of trees such as Sakhalin Fir (トドマツ) and Yezo Spruce (エゾマツ) spreads over. The sea of the trees is covered with fall foliage, so a lot of tourists come to a good place to see the fall foliage. The best time to see the fall foliage is from mid September to early October. Mikuni-toge Lookout (三国峠展望台) is in front of Mikuni Tunnel (三国トンネル). Admission free. A parking lot is free of charge. Mikuni Cafe (三国Cafe), a drinking fountain, a public restroom and the parking lot are provided on the site. The Mikuni Cafe serves meals from late April to late October, and the business hour is from 08:00 to 17:30. Horoka Onsen (幌加温泉) and Nukabira Onsen (糠平温泉) are a little away from here. Aticle is here

Shikaribetsu Kohan Onsen

Shikaribetsu Kohan Onsen (然別湖畔温泉) is a hot spring resort in Shikaoi town located in the northwestern part of Obihiro city. The distnace is around 30 km far away from the center of the Shikaoi, Hotel Fusui (ホテル風水) is built at about 800 above sea level in the western side of Lake Shikaribetsu (然別湖) in Estern Daisetsu Area, Daisetuzan National Park. Unfortunately, restraunts, cafes, cafes, souvenir shops and convenience stores are not built. There are Lake Komadome (駒止湖), Ogigahara Lookout (扇ケ原展望台) and Shikaribetsu Hokugan Campsite (然別湖畔北岸野営場) near here. Kanno Onsen (菅野温泉), Shikaribetsukyo Campsite (然別峡野営場), Shikaribetsukyo Shika-no-Yu (然別峡 鹿の湯) and Lake Shinonome (東雲湖) are relatively near here, too. Shikaribetsuko Kotan Open-air Bath on Frozen Lake

Lake Shikaribetsu in Shikaoi town located in the northwestern part of Obihiro city is a lake located in the highest place at altitude of 800 m in the lakes of Hokkaido, and is the only natural lake in Daisetsuzan National Park. The distnace is around 30 km far away from the center of the Shikaoi, and Shikaribetsu Kohan Onsen (然別湖畔温泉) is in the western side of Lake Shikaribetsu. Unfortunately, restraunts, cafes, cafes, souvenir shops and convenience stores are not built. Shikaribetsu-Kotan (然別コタン) is held from late January to late March during the frozen lake, and an open-air bath is open to the public. Article is here

Kanno Onsen

Kanno Onsen (菅野温泉) is a hot spring place around end of Hokkaido Road 1088 in Shikaoi town located in the northwestern part of Obihiro city. The distnace is around 30 km far away from the center of the Shikaoi, and only Shikaribestukyo Kanno Onsen (然別峡かんの温泉) is built at about 720 above sea level in a mountain of Estern Daisetsu Area, Daisetuzan National Park. Unfortunately, restraunts, cafes, cafes, souvenir shops and convenience stores are not built. Around here is not out of signal area. There are Shikaribetsukyo Campsite (然別峡野営場), Shikaribetsukyo Shika-no-Yu (然別峡 鹿の湯) and Lake Shinonome (東雲湖) near here. The Lake Shinonome is one of 3 great secret lakes together with Lake Onneto (オンネトー) and Lake Okotanpe (オコタンペ湖) in Hokkaido, and is well-known for meeting rare wild animals such as Pika. Shikaribetsukyo Onsen

Shikaribetsukyo Onsen (然別峡温泉) is a hot spring place in Shikaoi town located in the northwestern part of Obihiro city, and is well-known as a secret onsen at about 680 above sea level in a mountain of Estern Daisetsu Area, Daisetuzan National Park. The distnace is around 30 km far away from the center of the Shikaoi, and the Shikaribetsukyo Onsen Shika-no-Yu (然別峡温泉鹿の湯) is at the end of Hokkaido Road 1088, and is used as a hot spring facility of the Shikaribetsukyo Campsite. Unfortunately, restraunts, cafes, souvenir shops and convenience stores are not built. Around here is not out of signal area. There are Shikaribetsukyo Kanno Onsen (然別峡かんの温泉) and Lake Shinonome (東雲湖) near here. Nukabira Onsen

Nukabira Onsen (糠平温泉) is a hot-spring place at the south side of Lake Nukabira in Kamishihoro town located in the northern part of Obihiro city. The hot-spring place is formed along Nukabira National Route (National Route 273), and is a base for sightseeing of Higashi-Daisetsu region, Daisetsuzan Natioanl Park (大雪山国立公園 東大雪地区), and there are 9 hot spring accommodations, restaurants, a shop, souvenir shops, footbaths, handbaths, Nukabiragensenkyo Ski Resort (ぬかびら源泉郷スキー場), Higashi-Daisetsu Nature Building (東大雪自然館), Kamishihoro Railway Museum (上士幌鉄道資料館), Higashi-Daisetsu Nature Guide Center (ひがし大雪自然ガイドセンター), Nukabira Campsite (国設ぬかびらキャンプ場). Unfortunately, there is not a convenience store. There are Concrete Arches of Former Shihorosen Railway (旧国鉄士幌線廃線跡コンクリートアーチ橋梁群) including Taushubetsu River Bridge (タウシュベツ川橋梁), Nukabira Dam, Forest Truck Railway Eco Rail (森のトロッコ・エコレール), Mikuni Pass (三国峠) and Naitai Highland Farm (ナイタイ高原牧場) around the Nukabira Onsen. Horoka Onsen

Horoka Onsen (幌加温泉) is a hot spring place in Kamishihoro town located in the northern part of Obihiro city. A blue signboard of the Horoka Onsen is a mark along Nukabira National Route (糠平国道 * National Route 273), and visitors turn and go straight for around 1.5 km, and the end of the road is the Horoka Onsen. Only Kanoya Onsen Ryokan (鹿の谷温泉旅館) is built at around 700 m above sea level at the foot of Mt. Horoka in the Higashi-Daisetsu region, Daisetsuzan Natioanl Park (大雪山国立公園 東大雪地区), and is well-known as a secret onsen. It is out of signal area. There is a trailhead for Mt. Nipesotsu, but restraunts, cafes, souvenir shops and convenience stores are not built around here. Tomuraushi Onsen

Tomuraushi Onsen (トムラウシ温泉) is a hot spring place at end of Hokkaido Road 718 in Shintoku town located in the northwest part of Obihiro city, and is around 60 km distance through the Hokkaido Road 718 from the center of the Shintoku town. Only Kokumin-Shukusha Higashi-Taisetsu-so (国民宿舎東大雪荘) has opened a business at 640 m above sea level in a mountain of Estern Daisetsu Area, Daisetuzan National Park, and is well-known for meeting rare wild animals such as Yezo Sable. Not only mountaineers but also ordinary tourists visit here. The mountaineers use the Kokumin-Shukusha Higashi-Taisetsu-so as a base for trecking. Article is here

Osoushi Onsen

Osoushi Onsen (オソウシ温泉) is a hot spring place in Shintoku town located in the northwest of Obihiro city. Only Shikanoyu-so (鹿乃湯荘) has opened a business in a mountain of Estern Daisetsu Area, Daisetuzan National Park. The Shikanoyu-so has highest alkaline hot springs (ph 10) in Hokkaido, and the strong alkaline hot springs like soapy water with smooth and slippery touch is famous. A secret onsen in the heart of the mountain is popular for a lot of onsen lovers, too. The Shikanoyu-so is hard to be founded, and is around 6 km distance through a forestry road from Hokkaido Road 718 (北海道道718号). Drive carefully because the narrow road is rough. In addition, careful of bears and deers across the road. Unfortunately, restraunts, cafes, souvenir shops and convenience stores are not built. It is out of signal area. Article is here

Shikaribetsuko Kotan

Lake Shikaribetsu Kotan (然別コタン) is a winter event in Shikaoi town located in the north part of Obihiro city, and has been held on Lake Shikaribetsu near the hot spring resort from late January to late March since 1980, and about 40,000 tourists come to enjoy winter cold. Buildings called igloo made of snow and ice by Inuit people are built on 80-100 cm-thick lake ice, and Kotan (コタン * a village of the Ainu people) is formed. Making period is about 1 month. Because the village shows up on the frozen lake only in a winter, it is called the phantom village. Indeed, if snow and ice melt, nothing remains. Admission free. A parking lot is free of charge. Tokachirenpo Area

Kamifurano town and Biei town are called Tokachirenpo Area roughly. Famous mountains are Mt. Tokachidake (十勝岳), Mt. Oputashikeyama (オプタテシケ山), Mt. Bieidake (美瑛岳), Mt. Kami-Horokamettokuyama (上ホロカメットク山), Mt. Shimo-Horokamettokuyama (下ホロカメットク山) and Mt. Furanodake (富良野岳). Famous tourist attractions are Shirahige Falls (白ひげの滝), Bogakudai (望岳台), Shirogane Onsen (白金温泉), Fukiage Onsen (吹上温泉) and Tokachidake Onsen (十勝岳温泉). Blue Pond (青い池) is near here.

Shirahige Falls

Shirahige Falls (白ひげの滝) is a waterfall at about 600 m above sea level in Shirogane Onsen, Biei town located in the southeastern part of Asahikawa city, and was named after splashes of the falls like the white mustache. It is the rare waterfall in Japan that underground water drops from cracks of rocks, and is one of famous falls together with Furepe Falls (乙女の滝) in Shiretoko Peninsula and Funbe Falls (フンベの滝) in Hiroo in Hokkaido. By the way, Yumoto Shirogane Onsen Hotel (湯元白金温泉ホテル) is built on the falls. Admission free. As for a parking lot, visitors can park at Shirogane Tourist Information Center or a community parking lot. Blue Pond

Blue Pond (青い池) is a man-made pond near Shirakaba Road (白樺街道 * Hokkaido Road 966) in Shirogane district, Biei town located in the southeastern part of Asahikawa city, and is surrounded by trees at about 500 m above sea level. The depth of water is from 2.5m to 5m. An unpaved parking lot and unpaved walks are built on the site, too. There are not a food stall and a restroom. Admission free. The parking lot is free of charge. The walks are rough, so you should wear comfortable shoes. Please drive slowly not to raise a thick cloud of dust on the parking lot. The Shirakaba Road is often a traffic jam on consecutive holidays or weekends. By the way, Shirogane Dam (白金ダム), Shirogane Fudo Falls (白金不動の滝), Road Station "Biei Biruke" (道の駅びえい「白金ビルケ」), Bogakudai (望岳台), Shirahiige Falls (白ひげの滝) and Shirogane Onsen (白金温泉) are relatively near here. Bogakudai

Bogakudai (望岳台) is a lookout in the middle between Shirogane Onsen (白金温泉) and Fukiage Onsen (吹上温泉) linked by Hokkaido Road 996 in Biei town located in the southern part of Asahikawa city. In the Daisetsuzan National Park (大雪山国立公園), There are a trailhead for Tokachidake Mountain Range, a large parking lot, walks and a shelter in the mountainside at about 930 above sea level. A observation deck is not built. The shelter built in 2016 has a resting place, too, and a restroom is provided for free, too. The walks are built around the Bogakudai, but there are some places closed to the public because a bridge is broken. Admission free. A parking lot is free of charge. * The road between the Bogakudai and the Shirogane Onsen is closed to traffic from mid October to mid May. Article is here

Shirogane Onsen

Shirogane Onsen (白金温泉) is a popular hot-spring resort in Biei town located in the southern part of Asahikawa city. Three-hundred thousand people visit here every year. It is a base for sightseeing in the western part of the Daisetsuzan National Park (大雪山国立公園), and there are trailheads of Tokachidake Mountain Range including Mt. Tokachidake, Mt. Oputashike, Mt. Bieidake and Mt. Furanodake, near the Shirogane Onsen, so a lot of climbers as well as bathers come, too. There are 5 accommodations in a white birch forest, some trail pathes are built around those, too, and the tourists can enjoy great outdoors of Daisetsuzan. In addition, there are Shirogane Tourist information Center (白金観光センター案内所), Rindo Shokudo (林道食堂), Nagai Souvenir Shop (永井商店), Taisetsu Youth Recreation Hall (大雪青年交流の家) and Shirogane Campsite (国設白金野営場), too. By the way, the Shirogane Onsen is not so large, convenience stores are not built. Article is here

Fukiage Onsen

Fukiage Onsen (吹上温泉) is a hot spring place in Kamifurano town located in the southern part of Asahikawa city. There are Fukiage Roten-no-Yu (吹上温泉露天の湯) and Fukiage Onsen Rest Center Hakugin-so (吹上温泉保養センター 白銀荘) at 1200 m above sea level. Those are popular for high quality hot springs and a sense of openness. A type of the hot springs is acidic calcium and sodium sulfate chloride spring, and its characteristic is sour taste. That has a lot of the meta-silicic acid content, so it seems to be effective for beautiful skin. Unfortunately, restraunts, cafes, cafes, souvenir shops and convenience stores are not built. Nonstop buses do not run from Sapporo, New Chitose Airport or Asahikawa. Kamirurano town bus from Kamifurano Station to Fukiage Onsen, and here are Tokachidake Line Time Table and Route Map. Tokachidake Onsen

Tokachidake Onsen (十勝岳温泉) is a hot-spring place in Kamifurano town located in the southernern part of Asahikawa city. There are 2 buildings, Yumoto Ryounkaku (湯元凌雲閣) and Kamihoro-so (カミホロ荘) at around 1200 m above sea level, and it is said that the Kamihoro-so is a hot spring facility at the highest place in Hokkaido. There is a trailhead to Tokachidake Mountain Range (十勝岳連峰) at the end of a road, and a free parking lot and a restroom are built, too. The trailhead is next to the Yumoto Ryounkaku, and the Kamihoro-so is located under there little. The Tokachidake Onsen is famous for enjoying Sunrise, Sunset and Sea of Clouds because of the high place. Fall foliage are beautiful in an autumn, so a lot of tourists come.
