May 28th, 2014
Aji-no-Daio Muroran Head Office (味の大王室蘭本店) is a long-established ramen restaurant based in Muroran city. Mr. Hiroshi Koyanagai (小柳 弘) established it in 1971. After he trained his cooking skill under Mr. Ichiro Takahashi (高橋 一郎), the founder of Aji-no-Daio Tomakomai Head Office (苫小牧の味の大王総本店), in Iwamizawa city and became independent. It is said that the Aji-no-Daio Tomakomai Head Office produced Curry Ramen (カレーラーメン), and the Aji-no-Daio Muroran Head Office has spread the curry ramen in the Muroran. The Aji-no-Daio Muroran Head Office is run by Koyanagi Kikaku corp. (株式会社 小柳企画), and Mr. Tomiji Koyanagi (小柳 富資) is a company president at present. The head office is in Chuo-cho, the Muroran, and sister ramen restaurants open a business in Nakajima-cho, Chuo-cho, Higashi-muroran Station, Bibai. Mr. Tomiji plays a role of the chairman of Muroran Curry Ramen-no-Kai (室蘭カレーラーメンの会), and works to promote the Curry Ramen to place the 4th ramen of Hokkaido after famous three ramen, Sapporo Ramen (Miso Broth Ramen), Asahikawa Ramen (Soy Sauce Broth Ramen) and Hakodate Ramen (Salt Broth Ramen). About 30 ramen restaurants serve the curry ramen in the Muroran, and the curry ramen is well-known as a the comfort food of the Muroran.
My visited place is the head office in the Chuo-cho, and it is relatively near Muroran Station. The ramen restaurant on the 1st floor of 4 story building is not so large, and has an atmosphere such as a typical Japanese restraunt loved by local people. Counter seats, table seats and a small separate Japanese style room are provided, so I guess that even family customers may enjoy meals.
Muroran (室蘭) that 90,000 people live is the 11th largest city in Hokkaido and is located in the central Hokkaido and is facing the Pacific ocean. Muroran has a relatively calm climate, it is cold with temperatures 20 degrees in a summer, it is warm with temperatures -2 degrees in a winter. Muroran is called Iron Town and developed as a port town of heavy and chemical industries. It is famous that there are factories of Nippon Steel Sumikin (新日鉄住金) and Japan Steel Works (日本製鋼所), As for Kanamoto (カナモト * the TSE First Section presentation) and Narasaki Industry (ナラサキ産業 * the TSE Second Section presentation), Muroran is an establishment of a business place. Therefore Muroran is a few town that vistors can unusually see a scenery of the factories in Hokkaido. Muroran Night View is popular, too. Article is here
Ramen of Hokkaido
Ramen is a noodle soup dish topped with ingredients. It is said that Chinese noodles is the root of the ramen, and there are various theories, for example, Mr. Mistukuni Tokugawa (徳川光圀 * Mitokomon (水戸黄門)) ate the ramen in 1697 for the first time in Japan or the first ramen was that Keitaimen noodles (経帯麺) served in 1488 was written in Biryueken Diary (蔭涼軒日録). Noodle soup dishes were spread out in Japan because Nanking noodles (南京そば) was served in various China Towns, Japan. In Hakodate with a China Town, Yowaken (養和軒) served the Nanking noodles in 1884. In Sapporo, it is a root of Sapporo Ramen that a noodle soup dish was cooked by Mr. Wang Wen Zai (王 文彩), a chief chef of Takeya Shokudo (竹家食堂), in 1922. Houran (芳蘭), a branch of the Takeya Shokudo, opened a business in 1933 in Asahikawa. Asahikawa Ramen, Sapporo Ramen and Hakodate Ramen called the 3 Major Ramen in Hokkaido were born. But current ramen do not succeed to the taste of those ramen. Article is here
I visited here around 16:00 on a weekday. 2 customers enjoyed their meal on counter seats at this time. I sat at a table seat, and ordered the feature Curry Ramen. The price was JPY 750.
About 7 minutes later, the ramen was served. Roasted pork fillets, fried bean sprouts, green onions, cabbages and a dried laver were on noodles. The color of soup was curry color.
I ate a sip of the soup immediately. It was a tangy taste, and was a rich taste. The thick soup was impressive. It was tasty, but the soup was too salty for me. I guess that it is the ramen for rich taste loving person to want to eat.
The thick and curled noodles were homemade noodles, and went well with the soup. I wonder the salt or the spice warmed my body very much. Thanks for the tasty ramen!
