Restaurant Sekkatei (レストラン雪河亭) is a long-established Western-style restaurant founded in 1879 at Gotoken Head Office (五島軒本店) in Suehiro-cho, Hakodate city, and faces Nijukken-zaka Slope (二十間坂) at the foot of Mt. Hakodate-yama, and is near Bay Area and Motomachi Religion Area. Mr. Sotaro Wakayama (若山惣太郎) established the restaurant in 1879. Mr. Eikichi Goshima (五島英吉) worked as the first head chef, and the restaurant was named after parody his family name. * But his true name is Chikaharu So (宗近治). The Gotoken is a company that runs some restaurants or products and sells baked sweets, ice sweets and daily dishes, and one of the departments is the Restaurant Sekkatei. The name of the Sekkatei was named after the restaurant's name appeared in Ashibino (蘆火野), a novel, written by Mr. Kaoru Funayama (船山馨), a novelist, from Hokkaido, and the Ashibino used the Gotoken as a motif.
The Gotoken Head Office is divided into 2 parts, a new building and an old building. The Restaurant Sekkatei opens a buiness on the 1st floor of the new building. The interior decoration is relatively new, and is like an European-style restraunt. Atmospheres such as Meiji period or Taisho period are not almost felt, but chandeliers have an old atmosphere, so visitors can enjoy an atmosphere such as typical Hakodate filled with exoticism. The restaurant is large, and all seats are table seats, so I guess that family customers also enjoy meals. The old building built in 1934 has benn designated as a registered tangible cultural property, and sightseeing is possible. Tourists can enjoy atmospheres such as the Meiji period or the Taisho period there.

Hakodate (函館) that about 260,000 people live is the 3rd largest port city in Hokkaido, and is a regional hub city of the Southern Hokkaido area. The Hakodate became incorporated with Toi town (戸井), Esan town (恵山), Todohokke village (椴法華) and Minami-kayabe town (南茅部) in 2004, and most of Kameda Peninsula (亀田半島) has changed to the Hakodate. It is one of most popular tourist cities in the Hokkaido, and about 5 million people visit here. The downtown of the Hakodate from Mt. Hakodate toward former Goryokaku fort is developed on a large sandbar between the seas, and a unique seashore landscape is very popular. Although a lot of tourists think the center town of the Hakodate is around Hakodate Station and the Mt. Hakodate, it is around Hakodate Streetcar Goryokaku Koen-mae Stop (函館市電五稜郭公園前駅). The Hakodate is also well-known as a city with a lot of slopes, and there are 19 slopes with its name such as Hachiman-zaka slope (八幡坂), Daisan-zaka slope (大三坂) and Motoi-zaka slope (基坂), so around the Mt. As for a climate, the Hakodate is wamer than other cities in the Hokkaido because it is located of the Southern Hokkaido, and it does not snow hard. Read More
2 Types of Curry Sauce and Rice
Mr. Goshima learned Russian cuisine at the Hakodate Orthodox Church served the Russian cuisine and French cuisine at the time of about founding, and cooked curry sauce begun to be known in Japan at that time, and the Curry and Rice was added their's menu lineup. The Curry and Rice had won popularity, and it has become a synonym for Gotoken now. I visited here to eat the Curry and Rice around 17:00 on a weekday. A waiter shown me a table seat beside a window, and I sat at the window-side seat, and read a menu. I found several types of the Curry and Rice in the menu, and ordered 2 Types of Curry Sauce and Rice (Aigake Curry and Rice (あいがけカレー) * Aigake means "One is added to one" in English) in that menu. The price with a dish of salad and a cup of drink is JPY 1200.
The 2 types of curry sauce use carry sauce finished recipe by Goto in the Meiji period and carry sauce finished recipe by Mr. Tokujiro Wakayama (若山徳次郎), the 2nd owner-chef, trained his cooking skills in Teikoku Hotel (帝国ホテル) in the Taisho period, and I think that the Aigake Curry and Rice is filled with a history of the Gotoken. The curry sauce of the Meiji period was light color, and tasted mellow and mild. The curry sauce of the Taisho period was British style curry sauce, and was close to contemporary curry sauce in the Japan, and was familiar to me. It tasted rich flavor and spicy. The both were tasty! I think that that is so Hakodate, a civilization town, because the Russina style curry sauce and the British style curry sauce can be savored at the same time.
In addition, a relish is good, too, and it has plenty of variety such as sliced red pickled ginger, sliced fried garlic, peanut, sliced vegetables pickled in the soy sauce and pickled shallot. The visitors can season the curry sauce in favorite hotness with garam masala sauce if the visitors feel the curry sauce to be sweet.
