[Kantaro Ugaura Head Office in Hakodate] One of 4 Major Conveyor Belt Sushi Chain Stores in Hokkaido
June 22nd, 2017
Gourmet Kaitenzushi Kantaro (グルメ回転ずし 函太郎) is a popular conveyor belt sushi chain store based in Hakodate city, and is one of the 4 major conveyor belt sushi chain restraunts (Toriton in Kitami (北見のトリトン), Hanamaru in Nemuro (根室の花まる) and Nagoyakatei in Kushiro (釧路のなごやか亭) in Hokkaido. HK-R corp. has run a conveyor belt sushi as a new business since 1998. Now the head office is in Ugaura-cho Hakodate, and a lot of branches open a business in the Hakodate, Hokuto, Sapporo, Otaru, New Chitose Airport, Aomori, Hirosaki, Hachinoe, Akita, Morioka, Niigata, Sakata, Sendai, Tokyo Marunouchi, Kisarazu and Osaka. The Kantaro is well-known for serving reasonable fresh sushi items, so it is popular with local people.
My visited place is the Ugaura Head Office along Isaribi Street (漁火通) between Hakodate Station and Yunokawa Onsen (湯の川温泉), and the building faces the sea, and Mt. Hakodate can be seen from here. The appearance looks like just a typical Japanese restaurant chain. The building is large, and the interior decoration has an atmosphere such as a typical conveyor belt sushi chain store. Counter seats and table seats are provided, so I guess that even family customers enjoy meals.

Mt. Hakodate (函館山) is a range of mountains with 334 m in height in the west side of Hakodate city, and is general term of 13 mountains. Another name is Mt. Gagyu (臥牛山). The Mt. Hakodate used to be an island originally, but a sandbar grew on the sea, and the downtown of the Hakodate was built on the sandbar. A view of the Hakodate downtown has been famous since old days, and is one of the 3 best night views in the world together with Hongkong in China and Napoli in Italy. "A View from Mt. Hakodate" was given 3 stars in Michelin Green Guide Japon 2011. It features that world people rate "The View from the Mt. Hakodate" highly. In addition, it is also well-known as one of the 3 best night views in Hokkaido together with Mt. Tengu in Otaru and Mt. Moiwa in Sapporo. After all, the night view is most popular. Admission free. Hakodate (函館) that about 260,000 people live is the 3rd largest port city in Hokkaido, and is a regional hub city of the Southern Hokkaido area. The Hakodate became incorporated with Toi town (戸井), Esan town (恵山), Todohokke village (椴法華) and Minami-kayabe town (南茅部) in 2004, and most of Kameda Peninsula (亀田半島) has changed to the Hakodate. It is one of most popular tourist cities in the Hokkaido, and about 5 million people visit here. The downtown of the Hakodate from Mt. Hakodate toward former Goryokaku fort is developed on a large sandbar between the seas, and a unique seashore landscape is very popular. Although a lot of tourists think the center town of the Hakodate is around Hakodate Station and the Mt. Hakodate, it is around Hakodate Streetcar Goryokaku Koen-mae Stop (函館市電五稜郭公園前駅). The Hakodate is also well-known as a city with a lot of slopes, and there are 19 slopes with its name such as Hachiman-zaka slope (八幡坂), Daisan-zaka slope (大三坂) and Motoi-zaka slope (基坂), so around the Mt. Hakodate has a lot of slope lands, and the Hakodate has a lot of narrow roads. As for a climate, the Hakodate is wamer than other cities in the Hokkaido because it is located of the Southern Hokkaido, and it does not snow hard. Article is here
Sushi of Hokkaido
Sushi is a rice dish using various types of ingredients such as raw seafood, and Hand-rolled Sushi (握り寿司) is most famous, and others are Rolled Sushi (巻きずし), Sushi Pocket (いなり寿司 * Inarizushi), Scattered Sushi (バラ寿司・ちらし寿司), Pressed Sushi (押し寿司), Izushi Fermented Sushi (飯寿し) and so on. In Japan, Fermented Sushi (なれずし) has been eaten since Nara Period, and old Japanese made sushi as a fermented food. In Edo Period, the Hand-rolled Sushi was born, and was popular with Edo people in Edo Castle Town. It was not a dish but a snack in those days. Since Meiji peropd, sushi using sashimi has become widespread in the Japan, and a bite-sized vinegared rice has become common. So the sushi refers to the Hand-rolled Sushi in a large number of cases. Conveyor Belt Sushi
Customers should expect a long line at lunchtime, so I visited here to avoid the long line around 16:00 on a weekday. After entering the sushi restraunt, a sushi chef shown my counter seat. Since it was halfway hour, 6 groups of customers enjoyed their meals, and most of them looked local people. My friend living in the Hakodate told me that he visited the Kantaro once a month, so the Kantaro was popular with local people, after all.
So I ordered as follows including the sushi items caught in the Hokkaido. Black Rockfish Sushi (真ソイ) caught in Gulf of Funka (噴火湾) was JPY 324. 3 Types (Flounder Edge, Tuna and Fatty Salmon) of Grilled Sushi Item (えんがわ・トロ・トロサーモンのあぶり三昧) was JPY 669, Squid Sushi was JPY 324, Smoked Salmon Roll Sushi (スモークサーモンロール) was JPY 129, 3 Types (Crab Butter, Minced Tuna and Salmon Roe) of Gunkan Sushi (カニみそ・ねぎとろ・イクラの軍艦三昧) was JPY 453, Gagome Kombu and Squid Gunkan Sushi (がごめ昆布とイカの軍艦) was JPY 194 and Fried Salted Cod Roe Sushi (はちみつたらこ天ぷら握り) was JPY 324. Although the Kantaro is the conveyor belt sushi restraunt, customers can order to a sushi chef without taking a dish on a conveyor belt directly.
First of all, a dish of the Black Rockfish Sushi was served. It tasted like sea bream, and was a popular sushi item in the Hokkaido. A dish of 3 Types (Flounder Edge, Tuna and Fatty Salmon) of Grilled Sushi Items (えんがわ・トロ・トロサーモンのあぶり三昧) was served subsequently. Tuna and Fatty Salmon were fatty flesh, and Flounder Edge was very tasty. I like grilled flounder edge very much, and often order it at each conveyor belt sushi restraunts.
Interesting sushi were Smoked Salmon Roll Sushi, Gagome Kombu and Squid Gunkan Sushi and Fried Salted Cod Roe Sushi. As for the Smoked Salmon Roll Sushi, an avocado was nice texture and was tasty! Speaking of the Hakodate, Gagome Kombu is famous. It is rare kelp that grows around the the coast of eastern Oshima Peninsula (渡島半島) mainly. Gagome Kombu is very tenacious, and is good for your health. As for the Fried Salted Cod Roe Sushi, the appearance was interesting! The texture was outside crisp and inside moisty. It tasted salty a little, but the fried salted cod roe went well with sushi. Thank you for the wonderful meal.
