[Closed Down: Kanigen in Abashiri] Conveyor Belt Sushi Has Abundant Rare Sushi without Turning around
Kanigen (かに源) is a popular conveyor belt sushi restraunt near Abashiri station in Abashiri city. The restraunt is not so large, but it has an unique atmosphere. I visited here at 16:30, dinner opening time, on a weekday. A visitor like a regular customer entered the building immediately after my entering. Unfortunately, they closed down in 2018. This article before closing is as follows.
By the way, "Dreamint Okhotsk-go (ドリーミントオホーツク号)", an express bus, runs between the Sapporo and the Abashiri. Besides, Rent-a-car can be rented around Abashiri Station.
Abashiri (網走) that about 40,000 people live is the 20th largest tourist city in Hokkaido, and is one of regional hub cities of the Northeastern Hokkaido area. It is also a fisheries city facing the Sea of Okhotsk, and Crab, Idiot Fish, Whale and Salmon are famous as a local specialty. As for a climate, it is chilly that temperature rises to nearly 25 degrees in a summer, and it is cold that temperature falls to nearly -5 degrees in a winter, and it does not snow hard, too. It may be said that the Abashiri is relativelly warm climate in the Hokkaido. The Abashiri is well-known for drift ice reaching to the coast, and is famous as a winter tourist spot, too, and is roughly divided into 2 areas, a old city area (a neighborhood of Abashiri River mouth) and a new suburbs area. The new suburbs area is more developed than the old city area, and has more restaurants than the old city area. Read More
Sushi of Hokkaido
Sushi is a rice dish using various types of ingredients such as raw seafood, and Hand-rolled Sushi (握り寿司) is most famous, and others are Rolled Sushi (巻きずし), Sushi Pocket (いなり寿司 * Inarizushi), Scattered Sushi (バラ寿司・ちらし寿司), Pressed Sushi (押し寿司), Izushi Fermented Sushi (飯寿し) and so on. In Japan, Fermented Sushi (なれずし) has been eaten since Nara Period, and old Japanese made sushi as a fermented food. In Edo Period, the Hand-rolled Sushi was born, and was popular with Edo people in Edo Castle Town. It was not a dish but a snack in those days. Since Meiji peropd, sushi using sashimi has become widespread in the Japan, and a bite-sized vinegared rice has become common. So the sushi refers to the Hand-rolled Sushi in a large number of cases. Conveyor Belt Sushi
An owner said to me "Please sit at this seat", and I sat at a counter seat. There are the counter seats and some tables at the restraunt, so I guess that family customers enjoy their meals. This is the conveyor belt sushi restraunt, but sushi does not put on the conveyor belt. At the this conveyor belt sushi restraunt, the customers must order with an order form or voice to keep sushi fresh. Recommended sushi and seasonal sushi are hung on walls. They have a wide variety that I have never seen at other conveyor belt sushi restraunts. The owner told me that many tourists came and he served rare sushi for them to be pleased. I was very happy about his consideration.
My oreded sushi is as follows. Raw Oyster fishing in Akkeshi (厚岸産生かき * JPY 324), Takomanma (Marinated Spawn of Octopus Conispadiceus) fishing in Abashiri (網走産蛸まんま * JPY 216), Gray Rockfish fishing in Abashiri (網走産青ソイ * JPY 216), Omelet with Crab Meat (かにの卵焼き * JPY 216), Abdomen of Crab (カニのふんどし * JPY 162), Whelk (つぶ貝 * JPY 162), Homade Brown Meat Sauce (カニみそ * JPY 324), Raw Mackerel (生さば * JPY 324), Marinated Herring and Herring Roe (にしんの親子 * JPY 216) and Tilapia (ちか鯛 * JPY 216). A bowl of soup is on the house.
The Gray Rockfish that I have never eaten inhabits the Sea of Okhotsk. It has white flesh and tastes like ocean perch. The chewy flesh was tasty. Abdomen of a crab that I have never eaten had the texture like Okhotsk (boiled fish paste with crab meat flavor). Takomanma is marinated spawn of octopus conispadiceus. Customers can eat it without soy sauce. I have never eaten it, and it tasted delicate.
As for the marinated herring and herring roe, the marinated herring combine with herring roe. Those were good color and had chewy texture. It was the first time I heard the tilapia with white flesh native to Nile River in Egypt after searching on the internet. The tilapia is cultivated in Teshikaga town and Shihoro town, Hokkaido, and is taste like a sea bream.
Sushi of the Kanigen has features such as small-sized and being easy to eat. All the sushi that I have never eaten such as the Takomanma, the Gray Rockfish and the Abdomen of Crab are very nice, and I knew a reason why Kanigen was popular. king salmon and Sea Urchin have a good reputation, so I will try to eat those next time.

By the way, Club Tourism (クラブツーリズム), a Japanese tour travel agency, provides various types of tours such as day trip tours or ordinary tours. In the case of bus tours, tourists do not drive their cars themselves, so they can savor alcohol. Choosen tourist attractions are national parks such as Rishiri and Rebun, Shiretoko, and popular tourist places such as Furano and Biei, and some activities such as hiking and fruit picking are also enjoyed depending on seasons. If you are interested in tour trips, you should visit the club tourism's website for details.
