[Hanaichimonme Head Office in Wakkanai] Seafood Caught in Wakkanai Can Be Easten at Northernmost Conveyor Belt Sushi Restraunt in Japan
Wakkanai Hanaichimonme (稚内 花いちもんめ) is a popular conveyor belt sushi chain store based in Wakkanai city. Titus corp. (有限会社 タイタス) runs it, and the head office is in the Wakkanai, and a branch opens a business in Iwamizawa. The Hanaichimonme is popular for serving fresh seafood, and the head office near Wakkanai Hiigashi Primary School is famous as the northernmost conveyor belt sushi restaurant in Japan.
My visited place is the head office. The building is large, and the interior decoration has an atmosphere such as a typical conveyor belt sushi chain store. Counter seats and table seats are provided, so I guess that even family customers enjoy meals.
By the way, a direct bus does not run between Sapporo or New Chitose Airport and the Wakkanai. But an express bus Hamnasu-go (はまなす号) runs between the Sapporo and the Wakkanai. Besides, Rent-a-car can be rented around Wakkanai Station, Minami-wakkanai Station and Wakkanai Airport.
Wakkanai (稚内) that about 35,000 people live is the 21th largest fishery city in Hokkaido, and was named after Yamuwakkanai that means "A river with cold water" in Ainu language. It is one of regional hub cities of the North Hokkaido area, and is the northernmost port town in Japan. A catch of Octopus Dofleini (ミズダコ) is the largest in the Japan. In addition, a lot of people run a dairy farm, and the Wakkanai is one of tasty milk‐producing distlict in the Hokkaido. My grandmother was from Keihoku (恵北) in the Wakkanai, and I remember that the milk was very tasty when I visited parents' house of my grandmother in the old days. As for climate, the Wakkanai faces the Sea of Japan and the Sea of Okhotsk, so a wind blows hard. Average annual temperature is 7 degrees, and it is chilly in a summer, and it does not relatively snow hard in a winter. Wakkanai Peninsula (稚内半島) is in the west side of the city, and Soya Peninsula (宗谷半島) is in the east side of the city, and the downtown is in the west side of the city. Various things is the northernmost in the Japan, for example, Japane's Northernmost Railway Monument (日本最北端の線路の碑) is built beside the Wakkanai Station, too. Read More
Sushi of Hokkaido

In Japan, Fermented Sushi (なれずし) has been eaten since Nara Period, and old Japanese made sushi as a fermented food. In Edo Period, the Hand-rolled Sushi was born, and was popular with Edo people in Edo Castle Town. It was not a dish but a snack in those days. Since Meiji peropd, sushi using sashimi has become widespread in the Japan, and a bite-sized vinegared rice has become common. So the sushi refers to the Hand-rolled Sushi in a large number of cases. Conveyor Belt Sushi
I visited here with my friend that came to Hokkaido for the first time around 17:00 on a weekday. Several groups of customers already enjoyed their meals. We sat at counter seats. Sushi was gotten on a conveyor belt, but customers could order favorite sushi basically. I ordered restaurant's recommendations and seafood caught in Wakkanai.
First a dish of restaurant's recommended black rockfish (ソイ * JPY 360) was served. The black rockfish is famous in Hokkaido, but it is too unfamiliar fish any place other than the Hokkaido. The taste looks like sea bream. My friend was surprised at the taste, too. In addition, seafood caught in the Wakkanai were as follows. A dish of scallop (JPY 240), a dish of raw sea urchin (JPY 560), a dish of boiled octopus (JPY 150). Those were tasty, too. The octopus was a special product of the Wakkanai in particular.
Furthermore, I ate a dish of whelk (JPY 180), a dish of roasting fish porch (JPY 240) and a dish of ark shell (JPY 260). All roasting fish porchs I ate at all sushi restraunt were tasty, so it was one of my favorite sushi. Just as I thought, my friend highly recommended the black rockfish. While we were eaing, customers were almost full around 18:00. It was popular after all. Thanks for the tasty sushi!
