April 16th, 2017

Toda Memorial Park Cemetery

Toda Memorial Park Cemetery (戸田記念墓地公園) is a cemetery run by Soka Gakkai (創価学会) on a small hill of about 60 m altitude in Atsuta ward (厚田区), Ishikari city (石狩) located in the northeast part of Sapporo city. Mr. Seijo Toda (戸田城聖), the second-generation president of the Soka Gakkai, grew in the Atsuta, so the Toda Memorial Park Cemetery was developed in his memory in 1977. More than 54,000 graves are built on the site, and the size is large. Here is well-known as one of the best cherry blossom spots in Hokkaido. Although it is a religious facility, it opens to the public during a cherry blossom season. Especially, it attracts overseas people these days. The best time to see the cherry blossoms is about from early May to mid May. Admission free. A parking lot is free of charge.

Toda Auditorium (戸田講堂), Restaurant Atsutatei (レストラン厚田亭), Toda Memorial Open Space (戸田記念広場), Standing Figure of Josei Toda (戸田先生立像), Onshi Open Space (恩師公園), Okan Road (桜冠の道), Oka Road (桜花の道), a rest station, public restrooms and parking lots are built at the land of 1.58 million m2. The site is large, so I think that visitors should drive their auto mobiles to enjoy the cherry blossoms at various places. Ripple, a popular pizza restaurant, and cafes, Lyceenne and cafe VAN classic, are built near the cemetery, and a convenience store is close to here, too. Shiragane Falls (白銀の滝), Hamamasu Onsen (浜益温泉) and Fujimiya (ふじみや) are also relatively near here.

Only Hamamasu Recreation Center (浜益保養センター) surrounded by tree is built along Shokan Natinal Route (National Route 451), and a walk course and a park golf course are built around it, too. Kawashimo Seaside Campsite (川下海浜キャンプ場) and Kawashimo Bathing Beach (川下海水浴場) is relatively near here. The distance is around 70 km far away from the center of the Ishikari, and a convenience store is not built around here. Famous tourists attractions around here are Shiragane Falls (白銀の滝) and Cherry Blossom of Toda Memorial Park Cemetery (戸田記念墓地公園の桜). In addition, tasty restaurants around here are particularly Fujimi (ふじみ), Ripple (リップル), Kanetomo Sushi (かねとも寿し), Lyceenne (リセンヌ). I ate a bean-jam pancake at the Fujimi, and it was tasty. Cherry Blossoms of Toda Memorial Park Cemetery

The Toda Memorial Park Cemetery is divided into a large number of blocks, and the graves are built orderly. About 8,000 cherry trees such as Yoshino cherry are planted along roads and at the cemetery. In a spring, an amazing view of the cherry blossoms appears. When I visited here to see the cherry blossoms in full bloom for the first time, I was moved by the view. I agreed that people said it was one of the best cherry blossom spots in the Hokkaido. My favorite places are the Okan Road and the Oka Road. In addition, the size and the material of all the graves are same, so views with graves formed in orderly lines are interesting.

Along the Okan Road, a tunnel of the cherry blossoms are worth seeing because cherry trees are planded on both sides of the narrow road. A lot of the cherry trees spread those branches to the sky for some reason, so I feel as if it was Ume trees. Here was the most crowded place in the Toda Memorial Park Cemetery.

Along the Oka Road as well as the Okan Road, a tunnel of the cherry blossoms are worth seeing because cherry trees are bloomed on both sides of the narrow road. Fewer visitors came here than the Okan Road, so I think that it is easy to take a photo of only cherry blossoms without people.

    Hi,

There are buses to Toda Memorial Park. The problem is you need to catch the earliest bus at the station as the journey is quite long, you wont have enough time to see everything and have to rush to catch the last bus. The next trip i go i would rather rent a car so i can take my own sweet time for the sightseeing.
I have got a staff contact at the Toda Memorial Park and he is able to speak English. If you are interested i could give you his email address. He is able to tell you the bus schedules and some helpful tips.

    Hi, Buddy san,
Unfortunately, there is not any bus for Sapporo because Atusa is a remote village.
So I would like to make a suggestion.
I searched a sightseeing taxi on the internet.
    Owner‐driver taxi association was founded.
    http://www.sapporo-kojintaxi.jp/main/kanko/index2.htm

You might want to negotiate with the owner‐driver taxi association about taxi’s fare and a sightseeing route.

    Hi. Thanks for your responses.
Based on the websited provided, the return timetable from Toda Memorial Park to Sapporo is only at 2 PM? Is there any bus in the afternoon to Sapporo Station?

  4. good! hokkaido! says:

    Hi, Buddy san,
    You are welcome.

About the taxi’s fare, Unfortunately I am not sure.
But a website of Soka Gakkai says “Taxi’s one way fare is about JPY 13,000.”

  5. Budy says:

Hi. Thanks for your prompt reply. Really appreciate it.
I will be landing at Sapporo at May 15, 2017 at 09.00 AM.
I will take the taxi from Sapporo Station to the Park.
Could you estimate the taxi’s fare from Sapporo Station to the Park?
    Thanks.

    Hi, Buddy san,
I am sorry, I mistook the date.
5 May is error. Corrected date is 15 May.

But about cherry blossom forecast is anounced this year.
    http://sakura.weathermap.jp/

Unfortunately, it does not said about Atuuta, Ishikari.
I guess that the cherry blossoms are in full bloom around 10 May.

Should you do check websites related to Atuta, Ishikari around 15 May?

I will be in Sapporo at 15 May 2017.
I think it is too late to see the cherry blossom at this park.
Or is it possible to see them at 15 May 2017?
Need your info in the future.
    Thanks

  8. good! hokkaido! says:

    Hi, Buddy san,
The cherry blossoms at the Toda Memorial Park were in full bloom around 5 May last year.
I do not know exact date, but maybe you see the cherry blossoms in 5 May.
    The bus timetable is here.

Red letters “厚田” are the bus timetable for Toda Memorial Park.
札幌ターミナル⑦のりば (one from top) is the Sapporo Bus Terminal.
戸田墓園入口 (two from bottom) is the bus stop in front of the Toda Memorial Park.
    Enjoy yourself!
