Civil Engineering Research Institute for Cold Region
Civil Engineering Research Institute for Cold Region (寒冷地土木研究所) is an independent administrative corporation established in 1937 in Hiragishi, Toyohira ward, Sapporo city, and researches, developments and guides on technology about construction technology for a cold region and disseminates the results thereof. It is the only research and development institutes of the cold region civil engineering in Japan. They also offer Kita-no-Michinavi (北の道ナビ), a web service, and I often is helped by it. Here is a famous place for cherry blossoms, too, and it is open to the general public during only a week in early May. It opened from May 1 to May 7 when I visited here in 2017. It seems to open to the public during the Japanese Golden Week. Admission free. A parking lot is free of charge. A restroom and a restraunt are at a building, and anyone can use.
The closest station is Subway Nanboku Line "Nakanoshima Station" (地下鉄南北線「中の島駅」). Some popular ramen restaurants such as Sumire Sapporo Head Office (すみれ本店), Mendokoro Maruha BEYONDO (麺処まるはBEYOND) and Yamaarashi Head Office (山嵐本店) are near the staion. I ate miso broth ramen at the Sumire Sapporo Head Office, and it was tasty.
Sumire Sapporo Head Office
Sumire (すみれ) is a popular ramen restraunt based in Nakanoshima, Toyohira ward, Sapporo city. Sumire corp. runs it, and Mr. Nobuyoshi Muranaka (村中 伸宜) is a company president. Mrs. Akiko Muranaka (村中 明子), his mother, established Sumire (純連) in 1964. The head office is in the Sapporo, and branch ramen restraunts open a business in the Sapporo and Yokohama. The Sumire is well-known as a long-established ramen restraunt of Sapporo Miso Broth Ramen. A lot of ramen restraunts are affected by the Sumire, and a lots of pupils also appear in crowds. It is also famous that an owner of Saimi (彩味), a famous ramen restraunt, trained his cooking skill at the Sumire. Read More
Sapporo (札幌) that about 1,960,000 people live is the largest city in Hokkaido. Although there are various theories, its origin of the name is "Dry Big River (乾いた大きな川)" in Ainu language. A population of the Sapporo is the 4th largest city after Yokohama, Osaka and Nagoya in japan, and the population accounts for 36 % of Hokkaido's population! So the Sapporo has been flourished as the center of the Hokkaido. The area of the Sapporo is 1,121.26 km2, and is about as big as Hong Kong, and is the 7th largest city in the Hokkaido. The Sapporo is also famous as a tourist city, and about 15 million people come. As for a climate, it is hot that temperature rises to nearly 25 degrees in a summer, but it is easy to live without moisture. I always feel a little cool. It is cold that temperature falls to nearly -10 degrees in a winter, and amount of snowfall sometimes has more than 1 m. Read More

About 170 Chishima Cherry Trees (チシマザクラ) are planted along Shojin River (精進川), and it is famous for beautiful cherry blossoms in a spring. The cherry trees line along the parking lot, and views from bridges across the Shojin River are good especially. The cherry blossoms are in full bloom on both sides of the stream, and I felt as if it were a fairy-tale atmosphere a little. The site is not large, so it takes less than 60 minutes to look around on foot.
The Chishima Cherry Trees were replanted from Kiritappu (霧多布) in 1984, and have grown up for over 30 years. But those are not large, and a special characteristic of the Chishima Cherry Trees is that those do not grow largely. By the way, the Chishima Cherry Tree has other names, Etorofu Cherry Tree (エトロフ桜) and Kunashiri Cherry Tree (国後桜), and grows in the northern Japan mainland, highlands of Hokkaido, South Kuril Islands (南千島列島) and Urup Island (ウルップ島). The cherry tree was named by Mr. Kingo Miyabe (宮部金吾), a systematic botany, made Botanic Garden Hokkaido University (北海道大学植物園) in 1936. The cherry blossoms are pink at begining to bloom, and turn into white color in full blooming. It can be said that it is interested in the color gradients of the cherry blossoms.

By the way, Club Tourism (クラブツーリズム), a Japanese tour travel agency, provides various types of tours such as day trip tours or ordinary tours. In the case of bus tours, tourists do not drive their cars themselves, so they can savor alcohol. Choosen tourist attractions are national parks such as Rishiri and Rebun, Shiretoko, and popular tourist places such as Furano and Biei, and some activities such as hiking and fruit picking are also enjoyed depending on seasons. If you are interested in tour trips, you should visit the club tourism's website for details.
