Chishima Cherry Blossoms Blooming in Profusion Can Be Enjoyed in Sapporo -Civil Engineering Research Institute for Cold Region in Sapporo-
June 14th, 2017
Civil Engineering Research Institute for Cold Region (寒冷地土木研究所) is an independent administrative corporation in Hiragishi, Toyohira ward, Sapporo city. About 170 Chishima Cherry Trees (チシマザクラ) are planted along Shojin River (精進川), and it is famous for blooming beautiful cherry blossoms in a spring. It is open to the general public during only a week in early May. It opened from 1 May to 7 May when I visited here in 2017. Admission free. A parking lot is free of charge. There are a restroom and a restraunt in a building.
The cherry trees line along the parking lot, and views from bridges across the Shojin River are good especially. The cherry blossoms are in full bloom on both sides of the stream, and I felt it looked like a fairy-tale atmosphere a little. The Chishima Cherry Trees were replanted from Kiritappu (霧多布) in 1984 and have grown up for over 30 years. But those were not large, and a special characteristic of the Chishima Cherry Trees is that those do not grow largely. By the way, the Chishima Cherry Tree with another name, Etorofu Cherry Tree (エトロフ桜) and Kunashiri Cherry Tree (国後桜), grow in the north of Japan mainland, highlands of Hokkaido, South Kuril Islands (南千島列島) and Urup Island (ウルップ島) and were named by Mr. Kingo Miyabe (宮部金吾), a systematic botany, that made Botanic Garden Hokkaido University (北海道大学植物園) in 1936. The cherry blossoms are pink at begining to bloom, and its changes to white in full blooming. It can be said that it is interested in the color gradients of the cherry blossoms.
