[Yomogi in Higashikagura] Yachiyo Cold Buckwheat Noodles with Deep-Fried Whole of Asparagus
July 1st, 2015
Yomogi (蓬) is a popular buckwheat noodle restraunt founded in 2005 in Higashikagura town located in the southeastern part of Asahikawa city, and is relatively near Asahikawa Airport. Mr. Koji Ishimori (石森 孝治) is a restraunt owner. He moved from Sapporo to the Higashikagura after retiring a heavy machinery manufacturer, and he has opened a business to make use of his hobby, Hand-made buckwheat noodles. They got the Bib Gourmand in MICHELIN GUIDE Hokkaido 2012 Special Edition and 2017 Special Edition, so I think that his life is amazing. By the way, they open the restraunt from a spring to a autumn because they close the restraunt from January to March in a winter season.
A stylish building is surrounded by fields. A front garden is also built at the site, and it is possible to have a look. I guess that they rebuild a private house to the restraunt, and customers take off their shoes at an entrance, and enter the restraunt. The restraunt is not large. Counter seats and table seats are provided, so I guess that even family customers enjoy meals, but I suppose that a large number of people can hardly enjoy meals. By the way, in the case of busy days, buckwheat noodles are sold out before 13:00.
Buckwheat Noodles of Hokkaido
Hokkaido occupies about 40% of buckwheat production of Japan, and is the largest buckwheat production in the Japan, and Nagano prefecture, Ibaraki prefecture, Fukushima prefecture and so on follow the Hokkaido. The climate is cool in a summer, and a large temperature gap is great for good buckwheat, and the buckwheat production of the Hokkaido is increasing. Horokanai (幌加内), Fukagawa (深川) and Otoineppu (音威子府) are the 3 largest production places. Especially, the Horokanai is the best buckwheat production and the largest planted area in the Japan, and is well-known as a buckwheat town, and uses buckwheat fields as tourist attractions well. In Fukushima town, Sengen Soba Buckwheat Flowers Viewing Party (千軒そばの花鑑賞会) is held in buckwheat fields, and a fantastic conbination of the buckwheat fields and Matsumae Kagura (松前神楽) can be enjoyed. Because the buckwheat noodles were limited to about 50 dishes, it was almost full when I visited here around 11:30. When I sat at a counter seat that could look around the front garden, and I asked the owner about his recommendation, he replied "Yachiyo Cold Buckwheat Noodles (八千代蕎麦)". The price was JPY 800.
About 10 minutes later, the Yachiyo Cold Buckwheat Noodles was served. Cold buckwheat noodles were topped with tempura, and I poured a soy-based dipping sauce over the buckwheat noodles, and ate it. What customers should pay attention to was vegetable tempura. The vegetable tempura that the owner and neighboring farmers grew were used. One asparagus was fried entirely! and it was tasty! The buckwheat noodles were worth eating, too. In addition, the soy-based dipping sauce was just right seasoning, and I enjoyed eating till the last. Thanks for the tasty meals!
