[Yoshinoya in Yubari] No Beef Rice Bowl! Curry Soba with Curry Soup Filled to Brim
May 8th, 2015
Sobadokoro Yoshinoya (そば処 吉野家) is a long-established buckwheat noodle restraunt founded in 1928 in Yubari city located in the eastern part of Sapporo city, and is near Yubari City Office. Mr. Kazuta Takahashi (高橋 一太) is a restraunt owner now. Speaking of Yoshinoya, the Yoshinoya is famous for a beef rice bowl (牛丼 * Gyudon), but this Yoshinoya in the Yubari is famous for Curry Soba (カレーそば). My friend also recommended me that you should eat the Curry Soba, I visited here around 11:30, just after opening hour. The restraunt has an atomosphere such as a typical good old buckwheat noodle restraunt. Counter seats, table seats and small separate Japanese style rooms are provided, so I guess that even family customers enjoy meals. But I heard that the restraunt was crowded with customers at lunchtime.
Originally, the Curry Soba used to be a dish served by Fujinoya (藤の家) in the Yubari. It was closed down in 2009, and Yubari Curry Soba Council (夕張カレーそば協議会) was established. 7 restraunts in the Yubari have served the popular menu for local development movement. The Yoshinoya is one of those restraunts. The Curry Soba has been loved by Yubari people, and is called "The comfort food of the Yubari".
Buckwheat Noodles of Hokkaido
Hokkaido occupies about 40% of buckwheat production of Japan, and is the largest buckwheat production in the Japan, and Nagano prefecture, Ibaraki prefecture, Fukushima prefecture and so on follow the Hokkaido. The climate is cool in a summer, and a large temperature gap is great for good buckwheat, and the buckwheat production of the Hokkaido is increasing. Horokanai (幌加内), Fukagawa (深川) and Otoineppu (音威子府) are the 3 largest production places. Especially, the Horokanai is the best buckwheat production and the largest planted area in the Japan, and is well-known as a buckwheat town, and uses buckwheat fields as tourist attractions well. In Fukushima town, Sengen Soba Buckwheat Flowers Viewing Party (千軒そばの花鑑賞会) is held in buckwheat fields, and a fantastic conbination of the buckwheat fields and Matsumae Kagura (松前神楽) can be enjoyed. I sat a counter seat, and ordered the famous Curry Soba. The price was JPY 700. There were 6 groups of customers, and all the people ordered the Curry Soba, so I thougt that the Curry Soba was considerably popular. I did not order rice, but the rice seemed to go well with the Curry Soba, so the rice was also popular.
I saw their cooking from the counter seat, and mayonnaise was often used. The curry and the mayonnaise were unexpected combinations. About 20 minutes later, the Curry Soba was served. A bowl of curry soup filled to a brim was very impressive. The curry soup with ingredients including pork and onions was nearly curry sauce rather than buckwheat noodle soup. But it went well with buckwheat noodles, and it was tasty! Thanks for the meal!
