[Bibai Onsen] Day Trip Onsen and Blue Cave Bath at Pipa-no-Yu Yurinkan
Bibai Onsen (美唄温泉) is a hot spring place in Bibai city located in the northeastern direction of Sapporo city. Only Pipa-no-Yu Yurinkan (ピパの湯 ゆ～りん館) is built on a small hill with a distant view of the Bibai at about 70 m above sea level. A park golf course is built on the site, too, there are a lot of athletic facilities such as a baseball field and a tennis court in the area. In addition, there is Tomei Park (東明公園) that is one of the 10 best places for cherry-blossom viewing in Hokkaido next to here, too. The distance is around 5 km away from the center of the Bibai, and restraunts, cafes, souvenir shops and convenience stores are not built near here.
The bibai means "A place with a lot of fresh-water mussel" in Ainu language, and is pronounced "pipa-o-i", so the facility was named after it. I do not know about Yurinkan. Speaking of the Bibai, Bibai Grilled Chicken Giblets on Skewer (美唄焼き鳥) and Bibai Fried Noodles (美唄焼きそば) are famous. Some restraunts serve the grilled chicken on skewer in the Bibai, and the fried noodles can be bought at Coa Bibai (コアビバイ). As for tasty restaurants in the Bibai, Yakitori Tatsumi (やき鳥 たつみ), Sobadokoro Shoan (そば処匠庵), Sugiura Bakery (すぎうらベーカリー), Fukuyoshi (福よし) and Cafe Stoven (カフェ ストウヴ) are popular in particular. I ate foods at the Yakitori Tatsumi and the Sugiura Bakery, and those were tasty. By the way, Famous tourist attractions in the Bibai are Miyajima Swamp (宮島沼) and ARTE PIAZZA BIBAI (アルテピアッツァ美唄) as well as the Tomei park.

About 1,600 cherry trees such as Yezo Mountain Cherry Tree (エゾヤマザクラ) and Yoshino Cherry Tree (ソメイヨシノ), and about 5,000 azaleas are planted at the park. The Yoshino Cherry Trees are northern limit of cherry tree forest, and here is one of most famous good places to see the cherry blossoms in Sorachi district. The best time to see the cherry blossoms is about early May. The park is also well-known as a good place to see the azaleas, and the best time to see the azaleas is about from May to June. Migratory birds such as Wild Goose, Bean Goose, Whistling Swans come flying in a spring and an autumn, and 60,000 wild birds stay at the Miyajima Swamp, tops. The wild bird's silhouettes are cheered up by the morning sun with reddish light, and a scenery that the wild birds fly away (ねぐら立ち) is very mysterious. Actually, I was impressed very much. Read More

Bibai Fried Noodles
Bibai Fried Noodles (美唄焼きそば) are sold by Kadoya (角屋) in Bibai city, and have been begun to be sold since 1970, and are one of famous local dishes. The Bibai Fried Noodles seem to be devised to fill stomaches of workers in coal mine town "Bibai" and are called "Sacked Fried Noodles", too, and customers can eat directly the bibai fried noodles from a package without geting our hands dirty. In addition, the Kadoya does not retail the Bibai Fried Noodles and the customers can buy the Bibai Fried Noodles at the Coa Bibai (コアビバイ). 3 kinds of the Bibai Fried Noodles, the Reproduction of Bibai Fried Noodles (復刻版焼きそば), the Coal Bibai Fried Noodles (石炭焼きそば) and the Salt Bibai Fried Noodles (塩やきそば), were sold when I visited the Coa Bibai.
