May 5th, 2014

Benkei Onsen

Benkei Onsen (弁景温泉) is a hot spring place in Sobetsu town near Lake Toya (洞爺湖). Kubonai Fureai Center (久保内ふれあいセンター) and Benkei Onsen Public Bath (弁景温泉共同浴場) for members only are built at the foot of Orofure Pass (オロフレ峠). Common visitors can take a bath only at Kubonai Fureai Center. It maybe difficult to find a building because the building facing Osaru River does not built along Hokkaido Road 2. A convenience store is not built around here. The distance is around 7 km away from the center of the Sobetsu, and Bakei Onsen (蟠渓温泉), Orofure Pass (オロフレ峠) and Orofure Ski Resort (オロフレスキー場) are relatively near here.

It is the origin of the Benkei Onsen that Mr. Rinnosuke Sakuma (作間林之助) found a hot spring gushing out place in 1879, and built an onsen hut named "Sakuma Onsen". He developed a road, too. After that, it was called "Benkei Onsen". At the peak period of Horobestu Sulfur Mine (幌別硫黄鉱山), some onsen ryokan are built, but those have closed a business after closing the mine.

Lake Toya

Lake Toya (洞爺湖) in Abuta town located in the northwestern part of Muroran city is the third largest caldera lake in Japan and was born 10,000 years ago. The perimeter of the lake is about 50 km. 58 sculptures are located around the Lake Toya, and those create scenes in accord with the lake. There is Nakajima island (中島) in the middle of the lake, and tourists can go over to there by a pleasure boat. Geographical features of mountains and lake were authorized in the world Geopark.
