June 6th, 2017

Ayamegahara Primeval Flower Garden

Ayamegahara Primeval Flower Garden (原生花園あやめヶ原) is a wild flower garden in Akkeshi town located in the eastern part of Kushiro city. The wild flower garden spreads over on precipitous cliffs of about 100 m elevation facing the Pacific Ocean, and about 120 types of wild flowers bloom from May to October. Specailly, here is famous as 300,000 Arctic Iris Colony, the largest Arctic Iris Colony in Japan. * The Ayame means "Arctic Iris" in Japanese, and gahara means "An opening field of" in Japanese. The best time to see is from late June to early July. The tip of the cliff is called "Chinbe-no-Hana (チンベの鼻 * Nose of Chinbe)". The Chinbe (チンベ) means "A place that bear skin is dried" or "A place with a cliff" in Ainu language. A parking lot, a public restroom, a tourist information center and observation decks are built at the site. Admission free. The parking lot is free of charge.

Speaking of the Akkeshi, oyster is famous. Dishes related to the oyster is served at some restaurants in the Akkeshi. As for restaurants in the Akkeshi, Moritaka Ranch (森高牧場), Akkeshi Ekimae Ujiie Machiaisho (厚岸駅前氏家待合所), Escale (エスカル), Sumiyaki Aburiya (炭焼炙屋) and Akkeshi Yabusoba (厚岸藪蕎麦) are popular in particular. Unfortunately, hot springs do not gush out in the Akkeshi. By the way, Akkeshi Arctic Iris Festival (厚岸あやめ祭り) is held from late June to early July.

4 observation decks (Chinbe Observation Deck (チンベ展望台), Daikokujima-Kojima Observation Deck (大黒島・小島展望台), Chinbe-no-Hana Observation Deck (チンベの鼻展望) and nameless Observation Deck) are built at the site, and strange shaped rocks, the steep cliffs and seashore can be seen. In addition, horses that I have never seen are put to grazing, and some gates for the horses are built, so there are many dung on the grass, watch your step! A lot of wildbirds fly in the sky, and the multiplex sounds of birds singing are heard.
