Asahikawa (旭川) that about 340,000 people live is the 2nd largest commercial city in Hokkaido, and has flourished as the center of the North Hokkaido area. Woodworks have been prosperous since the old days, and furniture is famous. Because water is clear, a liquor such as sake of Otokoyama (男山) and Godo Shusei (合同酒精) are famous, too. Popular tourist attractions such as Asahiyama Zoo (旭山動物園) and Biei (美瑛) are around the Asahikawa, so a lot of tourists use tourist bases in the North Hokkaido. As for a climate, the Asahikawa is located in Kamikawa Basin, the largest basin in the Hokkaido, so it is hot that temperature rises to 30 degrees C in a summer, and it is cold that temperature falls to -25 degrees C in a winter, and it snow very hard, too. So a winter festival using the snow is famous.
The Asahikawa used to be called a military-based city, and the Seventh Division, one of the strongest army corps in Japan in those days, was stationed. It appears in Golden Kamuy, a popular Japanese Manga, and the Asahikawa was flourished as a linchpin of Northern defense in the Japan together with the railroad. So the Asahikawa has a ghost story that is well-known to most local people, and it is said that marching servicemen killed in World War II returned to their base. By the way, the Asahikawa has few nature tourist attractions. But it has Ueno Farm (上野ファーム), one of the most popular garden in the Hokkaido, and tourist attractions with a beautiful view such as Arashiyama Observation Deck (嵐山展望台), Shujitsu-no-Oka Hills (就実の丘) and Kamuikotan (神居古潭). Hitorical buildings such as red brick buildings are built, too.
The Asahikawa is also famous as birth places for Mrs. Ayako Miura (三浦綾子) and Yasushi Inoue (井上靖), famous novelists, and was used as the setting of their novels. Beautiful Bones: Sakurako's Investigation (櫻子さんの足下には死体が埋まっている), a popular Japanese Manga, uses around the Asahikawa as the setting, too. As for Onsen, there are few onsen in the Asahikawa. But the Asahikawa has Tatsu-no-Yu Onsen (龍乃湯温泉) and 21st century Mori-no-Yu loved only by onsen experts.
Speaking of the Asahikawa, a lot of people are reminded of Asahikawa Ramen, one of 3 major ramen in the Hokkaido. It is familiar to soy sauce broth ramen, but a taste is full of variety recently, too. About 500 ramen restaurants such as Aoba (青葉) and Hachiya (蜂屋) serve their tasty ramen. In addition, Fried Squid Leg Rice Bowl (ゲソ丼), the Shinkoyaki (Grilled Half Young Chicken) and Broiled Salty Pig Innards (塩ホルモン焼き) are famous local specialities, and JUN DOG (ジュンドック) is also popular by local people. As for sweets, Long-established confectioners such as The Sun Kuroudo (Theサン蔵人) and Tsuboya (壺屋) keep traditional taste, and new confectionery stores such as QLL, a store specializing in swiss roll, distinguish themselves. Speaking of highly reputed restaurants in the Asahikawa, Unagi Kadowaki (うなぎ かどわき) is given 1-star by Michelin Hokkaido, and Kitchen Casket (キッチンキャスケット), Sushi Minato (鮨みなと), Sumibi Yakitori (炭火焼鳥 りょう), Hachiya 5-jo Branch (蜂屋 五条創業店), Horokanai Densho Handemade Soba Seiichi (幌加内伝承手打ちそば せい一) and Ramen Yotsuba (らーめん よつ葉) are given bib gourmand by the Michelin Hokkaido.

List of Onsen
As for the Onsen, there are few onsen in the Asahikawa. But the Asahikawa has the Tatsu-no-Yu Onsen and the 21st century Mori-no-Yu loved only by onsen experts. My visited place is as follows.
21th Century Mori-no-Yu
21th Century Woods (21世紀の森) is a forest park in the eastern part of Asahikawa city, and has opened as the Asahikawa resident's place for relaxation and refreshment since 1985. It is far away from the center of the Asahikawa, and is close to Biei and Higashikagura. Lands around Lake Pepan (ペーパン湖) are roughly divided into 5 zones, Residential Workshop Zone (宿泊研修ゾーン), Creek Interacting Open Space (せせらぎ交流広場), Mutual Friendship Open Space (ふれあい広場), Family Zone (ファミリーゾーン), Niipe(21) Woods Nature-Based Experience Zone (ニイペの森 自然体験ゾーン), and Mori-no-Yu (森の湯) is at the Family Zone. A lot of campers use here, the Mori-no-Yu is a popular bathing facility for free. Read More
List of Events
Various events such as the events using the tasty foods or using snow are held from the spring to the winter.
Asahikawa Winter Festival
Asahikawa Winter Festival is a snow event held in Asahikawa city, and has been held since 1960. The snow event that about 1 million tourists come to see is one of the 2 major winter festivals in Hokkaido together with Sapporo Snow Festival. Open period is from 4 to 6 days in early February. Asahikawa Winter Festival has 2 venues, Asahibashi Bridge Venue (旭橋河畔会場) and Heiwadori Shopping Park Venue (平和通買物公園会場), and those are different from those atmospheres. As for the Asahibashi Bridge Venue adjacent to Tokiwa Park (常磐公園), it features a gigantic snow sculpture, and World Ice Sculpture Contest (氷彫刻世界大会) is held at the Heiwadori Shopping Park Venue, and fine ice sculptur works are displayed. In the daytime, snow sculptures look only white, but those turn into colourful themselves according to illumination or projection mapping in the evening. By the way, the Asahikawa is too cold in the February, so you had better wear a warm outfit. Especially, you had better wear a warm outfit carefully in the evening. Read More
List of Accommodations
Refer to following websites for the accommodations in the Asahikawa. You can get information regarding online reviews and photos.
By the way, Club Tourism (クラブツーリズム), a Japanese tour travel agency, provides various types of tours such as day trip tours or ordinary tours. In the case of bus tours, tourists do not drive their cars themselves, so they can savor alcohol. Choosen tourist attractions are national parks such as Rishiri and Rebun, Shiretoko, and popular tourist places such as Furano and Biei, and some activities such as hiking and fruit picking are also enjoyed depending on seasons. If you are interested in tour trips, you should visit the club tourism's website for details.
