New Home Run
New Home Run (ニューホームラン) is a long-established ramen restraunt with a history of about 40 years in Toyooka, Asahikawa city, and is relatively near Asahikawa Ryukoku Senior High School (旭川龍谷高校). The second owner, a 77 years old woman, runs the ramen restraunt by herself. The New Home Run is popular for serving good old Asahikawa Ramen for a reasobale price. I would often visit here if I was a student. In fact, some Asahikawa Ryukoku Senior High School students come.
The ramen restraunt is a little large, amd is filled with an atmosphere of Showa period. All seats are table seats, so I guess that even family customers enjoy meals. But the ramen restraunt is crowded with customers at lunchtime.

Asahikawa (旭川) that about 340,000 people live is the 2nd largest commercial city in Hokkaido, and has flourished as the center of the North Hokkaido area. Woodworks have been prosperous since the old days, and furniture is famous. Because water is clear, a liquor such as sake of Otokoyama (男山) and Godo Shusei (合同酒精) are famous, too. Popular tourist attractions such as Asahiyama Zoo (旭山動物園) and Biei (美瑛) are around the Asahikawa, so a lot of tourists use tourist bases in the North Hokkaido. As for a climate, the Asahikawa is located in Kamikawa Basin, the largest basin in the Hokkaido, so it is hot that temperature rises to 30 degrees C in a summer, and it is cold that temperature falls to -25 degrees C in a winter, and it snow very hard, too. So a winter festival using the snow is famous. Article is here
Ramen of Hokkaido
Ramen is a noodle soup dish topped with ingredients. It is said that Chinese noodles is the root of the ramen, and there are various theories, for example, Mr. Mistukuni Tokugawa (徳川光圀 * Mitokomon (水戸黄門)) ate the ramen in 1697 for the first time in Japan or the first ramen was that Keitaimen noodles (経帯麺) served in 1488 was written in Biryueken Diary (蔭涼軒日録). Noodle soup dishes were spread out in Japan because Nanking noodles (南京そば) was served in various China Towns, Japan. In Hakodate with a China Town, Yowaken (養和軒) served the Nanking noodles in 1884. In Sapporo, it is a root of Sapporo Ramen that a noodle soup dish was cooked by Mr. Wang Wen Zai (王 文彩), a chief chef of Takeya Shokudo (竹家食堂), in 1922. Houran (芳蘭), a branch of the Takeya Shokudo, opened a business in 1933 in Asahikawa. Asahikawa Ramen, Sapporo Ramen and Hakodate Ramen called the 3 Major Ramen in Hokkaido were born. But current ramen do not succeed to the taste of those ramen. Article is here
Soy Sauce Broth Ramen
Nobody enjoyed meals when I visited here around 14:30 on a weekday. I was lucky, and she always cared about me, and I had a conversation with her after I ordered Soy Sauce Broth Ramen (しょうゆラーメン). The price was JPY 550, and was very reasonable price. The New Home Run is known as a popular ramen restraunt at present, and this and that is all coming 3 generations in a family. About 30 years has passed since she succeeded this ramen restraunt, and I think that this ramen may be called a ramen brand.
A former owner used to use ready-made soup before the owner succeeded this ramen restraunt, but she has been particular about homemade soup after she succeeded this ramen restraunt. Higeta Soy Sauce (ヒゲタ醤油) seems to hold the key to tasty soy sauce broth ramen, too. She said it was hard to work with her age, but it should be ok that she is an old woman full of drive. She cooked ramen quickly while having such a talk. I was interested in hot water mixed with something like soup for boiling noodles. Perhaps this is hidden flavor of seasoning.
About 5 minutes later, the Soy Sauce Broth Ramen was served. Roasted pork fillets, bamboo shoots and green onions were on the noodles. I had a sip of soup immediately. The soup had a thick taste and a good old taste, and it was just right for the Asahikawa Ramen. In the north of Asahikawa, burnt lard oil seems to be the secret of ramen to making it so delicious. The soup might be like the soup of Hachiya (蜂屋) by the burnt lard oil.
While I ate the ramen, the owner asked me repeatedly whether I ate rice. I told her that my stomach was too full, but in fact, it was recommended to sop the rice in the soup and eat. Though I had her recommendation, I did something really awful to her. I told her that I went for a long drive when I went back, and she gave me a energy drink to shake off my sleepiness. She is very nice. This is one of the New Home Run's charms, and I think that it is a popular secret. When I visit here next, I certainly order the rice!
