[Aoba Head Office in Asahikawa] Traditional Soy Sauce Broth Ramen
CONTENTS
Aoba
Asahikawa Ramen Aoba (旭川らぅめん 青葉) is a famous long-established ramen restaurant founded in 1947 in Asahikawa city. Mr. Yuichi Murayama (村山 有一) is a ramen restaurant owner at present. The foundation year is same as Hachiya (蜂屋), a famous long-established ramen restaurant in the Asahikawa, and the Aoba is well-known as one of the root of Asahikawa Ramen. The head office facing Midoribashi street (緑橋通り) is relatively near Asahikawa Station, and a branch ramen restaurant opens a business at Asahikawa Ramen Village (旭川ラーメン村).

My visited place is the head office. An orange shop curtain is eye-catching, so it is easy to find it. The ramen restaurant is not large, and the interior decoration is shibui. A wall is covered by cards for autographs. Except for some tables, seats are counter seats. I guess that family customers might not enjoy meals in busy hour because of small tables.
ASAHIKAWA
Asahikawa (旭川) that about 340,000 people live is the 2nd largest commercial city in Hokkaido, and has flourished as the center of the North Hokkaido area. Woodworks have been prosperous since the old days, and furniture is famous. Because water is clear, a liquor such as sake of Otokoyama (男山) and Godo Shusei (合同酒精) are famous, too. Popular tourist attractions such as Asahiyama Zoo (旭山動物園) and Biei (美瑛) are around the Asahikawa, so a lot of tourists use tourist bases in the North Hokkaido. As for a climate, the Asahikawa is located in Kamikawa Basin, the largest basin in the Hokkaido, so it is hot that temperature rises to 30 degrees C in a summer, and it is cold that temperature falls to -25 degrees C in a winter, and it snow very hard, too. So a winter festival using the snow is famous. Read More

Ramen of Hokkaido
Ramen is a noodle soup dish topped with ingredients. It is said that Chinese noodles is the root of the ramen, and there are various theories, for example, Mr. Mistukuni Tokugawa (徳川光圀 * Mitokomon (水戸黄門)) ate the ramen in 1697 for the first time in Japan or the first ramen was that Keitaimen noodles (経帯麺) served in 1488 was written in Biryueken Diary (蔭涼軒日録). Noodle soup dishes were spread out in Japan because Nanking noodles (南京そば) was served in various China Towns, Japan. In Hakodate with a China Town, Yowaken (養和軒) served the Nanking noodles in 1884. In Sapporo, it is a root of Sapporo Ramen that a noodle soup dish was cooked by Mr. Wang Wen Zai (王 文彩), a chief chef of Takeya Shokudo (竹家食堂), in 1922. Houran (芳蘭), a branch of the Takeya Shokudo, opened a business in 1933 in Asahikawa. Asahikawa Ramen, Sapporo Ramen and Hakodate Ramen called the 3 Major Ramen in Hokkaido were born. But current ramen do not succeed to the taste of those ramen. Read More

Soy Sauce Broth Ramen
When I visited here around 15:00 on a weekday, they just started afternoon business hours, and a lot of visitors already formed a line in front of the ramen restraunt. The ramen restaurant was full just before my turn came. Therefore, I waited in front of the ramen restraunt. When I waited outside, a waiter asked me "What will you order?", so I ordered the most popular Soy Sauce Broth Ramen (正油らぅめん). The price was JPY 750.

Customers came one after another while I was waiting. A person next to me was a South Korean tourist, and he asked the waitress Hangul menu. A lot of oversea visitors seem to come, so an English menu is provided, too. After all, the Aoba become widely known.

I sat a couner seat after waiting for about 20 minutes. The Soy Sauce Broth Ramen was served after taking the seat for about 3 minutes. A large roasted pork fillet, bamboo shoots, a dried laver and green onions were on noodles. First of all, an octopus printed on the dried laver caught my eyes. In case of looking at a picture on the internet, the picture looks like a photoshoped picture.

I ate a sip of soup immediately. The soup was covered with lard oil, and was very hot, and it was the taste of just traditional Asahikawa Ramen. The soup was not salty than it looked, and I felt light taste. Double soup (ダブルスープ), traditional Asahikawa ramen soup, that was made broth from seafood and mountain food went well with soy sauce. It was tasty!

The homemade noodles were tough, and were nice texture, so I enjoyed chewy texture. When I drank up the soup, letters of thanks (感謝) in Japanese appeared on the bottom of a bowl. No, thank YOU! Thanks for the tasty ramen!

By the way, Club Tourism (クラブツーリズム), a Japanese tour travel agency, provides various types of tours such as day trip tours or ordinary tours. In the case of bus tours, tourists do not drive their cars themselves, so they can savor alcohol. Choosen tourist attractions are national parks such as Rishiri and Rebun, Shiretoko, and popular tourist places such as Furano and Biei, and some activities such as hiking and fruit picking are also enjoyed depending on seasons. If you are interested in tour trips, you should visit the club tourism's website for details.
