[Asahi Observation Deck in Otaru] Comfortable Views of Otaru Can Be Enjoyed at Real-Life Location of The Last Love Song on This Little Planet
Asahi Observation Deck
Asahi Observation Deck (旭展望台) is an observation platform on a hill at about 190 m above sea level in the back side of Otaru Station (小樽駅), and visitors can look over Otaru city. It is well-known as a real-life location of The Last Love Song on This Little Planet (最終兵器彼女), a popular anime, and is also famous as a good place to enjoy a night view in the Otaru, one of the best night viwes in Hokkaido. A literary monument of Mr. Takiji Kobayashi (小林多喜二), a novelist, and a monument inscribed with a poem of Mr. Kankei Oda (小田觀螢), a poet, are built at the site, and there are a public restroom and benches beside a parking lot. 18 walks named "Walks around Asahi Observation Deck (旭展望台周辺遊歩道)" with 14 km length in total are built, and nature walk can be enjoyed, too. Admission free. The parking lot is free of charge. A mark is Otaru Commercial High School (小樽商業高校) along Jigoku-zaka Slope (地獄坂), and the visitors turn right in front of the school, and advance along a road, and reach to the Asahi Observation Deck. Be careful not to over a precipice, because the road is narrow. The road is closed in a winter.
A highway bus "Otaru-go (おたる号)" runs between the Otaru and the Sapporo. Unfortunately, the express bus does not run between New Chitose Airport and the Otaru. Besides, Rent-a-car can be rented around Otaru Station.
Otaru (小樽) that 120,000 people live is the 9th largest port city in Hokkaido, and is located in the northwestern direction of Sapporo city. It takes about 30 minutes from the Sapporo to the Otaru by a train. The Otaru is one of most popular tourist cities in the Hokkaido, and about 8 million people visit here. It is also well-known as a city with a lot of slopes, and there are 30 slopes with its name, so the Otaru has a lot of slope lands, and has a lot of narrow roads. It is famous as a city with a lot of sushi restaurants, too, and more than 100 sushi restaurants open their businesses. Fresh seafood caught in the Sea of Japan facing the Otaru or caought in various places of the Hokkaido can be enjoyed. As for a climate, the Otaru has calm climate, it is cold in a summer, and it snow hard. The Otaru was called an inaccessible land in the old days because all transportation facilities paralyzed by a heavy snow. Read More
Look of Asahi Observation Deck
A hut like a gazebo is built at an observation platform. Its altitude is lower than Mt. Tenguyama (天狗山), so whole downtown of the Otaru can not be viwed, but buildings are moderately close to the observation deck, and a view is comfortable. The beautiful morning sun can be seen in the early morning. A few visitors come here, so here is a good little-known tourist attractions.

By the way, Club Tourism (クラブツーリズム), a Japanese tour travel agency, provides various types of tours such as day trip tours or ordinary tours. In the case of bus tours, tourists do not drive their cars themselves, so they can savor alcohol. Choosen tourist attractions are national parks such as Rishiri and Rebun, Shiretoko, and popular tourist places such as Furano and Biei, and some activities such as hiking and fruit picking are also enjoyed depending on seasons. If you are interested in tour trips, you should visit the club tourism's website for details.
