September 3rd, 2014

Yoroushi Onsen

Yoroushi Onsen (養老牛温泉) is a hot-spring place in Nakashibetsu town located between Lake Mashu (摩周湖) and Notsuke Peninsula (野付半島). 2 onsen ryokan, Hotel Yoroushi (ホテル養老牛) and Yuyado Daiichi (湯宿だいいち) are built along Hokkaido Route 505, and Karamatsu-no-Yu (からまつの湯), a mixed bathing open-air bath for free, is a little away from the center of the Yoroushi Onsen. Unfortunately, restraunts, cafes, cafes, souvenir shops and convenience stores are not built. The hot-spring place is surrounded by nature, and rare animals such as Blakiston's Fish Owl and Japanese sable inhabit a forest, so those animals sometimes appear at the accommodations. There are Yoro Falls (養老の滝), Kaiyodai Observatory (開陽台) and Lake Mashu (摩周湖) around the Yoroushi Onsen.

Movie of Yoro Falls

As legend goes, Ainu people used the Yoroushi Onsen in 1600s, so the onsen has a long history. Yoroushi means "It is soaked in water" in Ainu language, and I want to know what it is. It is said that the basement of the Yoroushi Onsen is that Mr.Takeshige Nishimura (西村武重) opened an onsen ryokan in 1920. A stream fishing, cycling, fresh green and trekking can be enjoyed in a summer, fall foliage can be enjoyed in an autumn, and snowshoes can be enjoyed in a winter. Hotel guests can be lend a bicycle and the snowshoes at each accommodations. By the way, there is a free parking lot at the center of the Yoroushi Onsen. But except taking a rest, I think that purpose of use is nothing. Nonstop buses for common visitors do not run.

Kaiyodai Hill

Kaiyodai Hill (開陽台) is a hill in Nakashibetsu town is located in the northwestern part of Nemuro city. A round observation deck is built on the hilltop at about 270 m above sea level, and is famous for looking over 330 degrees view along the horizon. I wondered why it was not 360 degree. On investigation, the horizon looks round in 330 degree. The other 30 degree may be the back side. Kaiyodai Ranch (開陽台牧場) with area of about 780 ha is built on the hill, too, and 1000 milk cows are put out to pasture. A walk with the total length of 2.6 km and Kaiyodai Ranch Fureai Park (開陽台牧場ふれあい広場) are built along the ranch, and a walking is available. Bell of Happiness (幸せの鐘) and Figures of Dairy Cow (乳牛の像) are built, too. By the way, the straight road "North 19 Line" in front of the Kaiyodai Hill is called Milk Road (ミルクロード) because most tank trucks for milk run on the road, and it is popular with motor tour riders. Uramashu Observation Deck

Uramashu Observation Deck (裏摩周展望台) is a viewing point at the end of Hokkaido Road 150 in northeastern part of Lake Mashu. In Akan Mashu National Park, it built on a somma of the Lake Mashu at about 580 m above sea level, and is in the other side of Mashu 1st Observation Deck (摩周第一展望台) and Mashu 3rd Observation Deck (摩周第三展望台) across the lake, too, and only Uramashu Observation Deck is in Kiyosato town. Uramashu 2nd Observation Deck used to be near here, too. Mt. Mashudake (摩周岳) can be seen on the left side and, Kamuisshu Island (カムイシュ島) can be seen on the right side. An observation deck, a souvenir shop, a rest place, a public restroom and a parking lot are built on the site. Admission free. A parking lot is free of charge. An entrance gate of the Uramashu Observation Deck is closed from November to late April. * Uramashu means "The back side of the Lake Mashu" in Japanese, and the Mashu 1st Observation Deck and the Mashu 3rd Observation Deck are called "The front side of the lake" because those are famous. Kaminoko Pond

Kaminoko Pond (神の子池) is a pond in Kiyosato town located in the northern part of Lake Mashu (摩周湖). In Akan Mashu National Park, the pond is in a primeval forest at about 280 m above sea level. After turning Hokkaido Road 1115 to a forestry road, visitors head the road for about 2 km, and reach to a parking lot. The perimeter of the pond is about 220 m. The maximum water depth is 5 m. The pond is very small. It is said that the Kaminoko Pond is connected to Lake Mashu under the ground, and water of 12,000 t a day spring out from the bottom of the pond. * There is another opinion that the Kaminoko Pond is not connected to the Lake Mashu, too. People in the old days thought of the pond as the son of the Lake Mashu meaned "A mountain god's lake" in Ainu language, and the pond was named "Kaminoko Pond (A son of the god in Japanese language)". * There are various opinions. Trees that sank into the pond have never rotted have a good reputation, and it becomes a popular tourist attraction as a spiritual place because of the mystery. There are the Kaminoko Pond, walks, a restroom and the parking lot on the site. Admission free. The parking lot is free of charge. Bears live around here, so you had better do not visite here in the early morning or the evening. By the way, snow is not removed on the forestry road, and the road might be closed almost from mid November to late April. Article is here

Karamatsu-no-Yu

Karamatsu-no-Yu is an open-air bath surrounded by a river and a forest, and is a little far from the center of Yoroushi Onsen. After going a head along a side road, a hut comes into sight near Karamatsu Bridge (からまつ橋). This onsen is displayed on a car navigation system, but it is hard to considerably find it if the visitors do not have the car navigation system. Regional Forest Officers that manage council-owned trees made the bathub surrounded by rocks to rinse their sweat and dirt off using hot springs and relax themselves. It became famous as a secret onsen, and has been open to the general public for free.

There is the mixed bathing open-air bath surrounded by the rocks along Baushibetsu River (バウシべツ川). Volunteers always keep the bath clean. The murmuring of the river make bathers very comfortable, and they can enjoy a sense of openness. But a lot of horseflya gadflies bug the bathers in a summer. When I visited here, a motorcycle tourist took a bath, so I get his permission to take a photo of his back. Thank you! There is 1 open-air bath limited groups along the upper stream, and the order of priority is prioritized, the 1st in order is a family, the 2nd in order is a couple, the 3rd in order is a female's group, and the 4th in order is a single male's group.

I favorited the mixed bathing open-air bath surrounded by the rocks and the seseragi-no-Yu in particular. The view that the Moshiribetsu River flow in front of the bather's eyes is splendid. The seseragi-no-yu is like a small room, and the bathers are able to concentrate on a scene of the river. I think that it has an atmosphere such as the tea-ceremony room.
