Karamatsu-no-Yu and Great Open-air Baths -Youroushi Onsen in Nakashibetsu-

September 3rd, 2014

Yoroushi Onsen

Yoroushi Onsen (養老牛温泉) is a hot-spring place in Nakashibetsu town located between Lake Mashu (摩周湖) and Notsuke Peninsula (野付半島). It is said that Yoroushi Onsen was discovered by Ainu people about 300 years ago. There are only 2 accommodations, Hotel Yorouushi (ホテル養老牛) and Yuyado Daiichi (湯宿だいいち), and there is the Karamatsu-no-Yu (からまつの湯) that is mixed bathing open-air spa and is free of charge is a little far away. Owls inhabit a forest and it is known for watching the owls at each hotel. There is Yoro Falls near the hotels.

Karamatsu-no-Yu

Karamatsu-no-Yu is a little far from the hot-spring place. When tourists follow a head along a side road, there is a building near Karamatsu bridge. This onsen is displayed on a car navigation system, but it is hard to considerably find if the tourists do not have the car navigation system. There is the mixed bathing open-air bath along Baushibetsu River. A bathtub is surrounded by rocks and is managed very neatly. The murmuring river make me very comfortable. Bathers can enjoy a sense of openness.

Hot springs are sodium and calcium chloride sulfate spring, and are clear and colorless and have a little salty taste and no smell. Because a washbowl are provided near the bath, let's take a bath after pouring the hot springs on your body to washed off your sweat and dirt. By the way, the bathers can not take a bath in their swimsuits and seem to take a bath in wrapping body with bath towel. Sex-segregated dressing rooms are provided near the bath.

Yuyado Daiichi

Yuyado Daiichi is a popular hot-spring ryokan and opened a business in 1972. It is famous for having splendid open-air baths. Tourists can take a day trip bath from 13:00 to 15:00 and from 19:00 to 21:00. An entrance fee to the bath facility is JPY 600. There are 1 mixed bathing open-air bath, 5 or 6 open-air baths, 3 indoor baths, 1 cold bath and 2 saunas at a bathhouse. The bathhouse for women seems to have a bedrock bath. Interior decoration of the bathhouse is made of hinoki, the relaxed atmosphere of the bathhouse was very good. The warmth of woods made me feel comfortable.

As for well‐known open-air baths, the open-air baths were located like ponds of a garden. I could enjoy the open-air bath surrounded by rocks, the mixed bathing open-air bath surrounded by rocks, 2 open-air log baths, the open-air bath lying, 2 seseragi-no-yu bath and a mist sauna using hot springs. It had a sense of openness, and a view was wonderfull, too. Moshiribetsu River flowed along the open-air baths, and the murmuring of the river and trees made me feel comfortable. I in particular favorited the mixed bathing open-air bath surrounded by rocks and the seseragi-no-Yu. The view that the Moshiribetsu River flowed in front of my eyes was splendid. The seseragi-no-yu were built under a resting place, but I was able to concentrate on a scene of the river, because it was small size. I thought that it had an atmosphere such as the tea-ceremony room.
