[Utoro Onsen in Shiretoko Shari] Day Trip Bath and Sightseeing Spots Can Be Enjoyed

Utoro Onsen

Utoro Onsen (ウトロ温泉) is a hot-spring place in Utoro, Shari town located in the middle of Shiretoko Peninsula (知床半島) and is called another name Shiretoko Onsen (知床温泉), and there are about 16 hot spring facilities. Utoro is one of the 3 major superb views in Hokkaido together with Shakotan and Benbe Rebun (Rebunge, Toyoura), and has been well-known as a scenic area since a long time ago. Hot springs were succeeded in drilling in 1971, and the Utoro Onsen has been developed as a tourist hub for Shiretoko Goko Lakes and Kamuiwakka Hot Falls, etc. in the north side of the Shiretoko Peninsula, and is a popular hot-spring resort for enjoying the sun set over the Sea of Okhotsk and mountains of Rausu.

The hot-spring place is roughly divided into 2 parts, the fishing port side and the hill side, and there are Road Station "Utoro シリエトク", souvenir shops, seafood shops, restaurants, convenience stores, gas stations, Oronkoiwa Rock (オロンコ岩) and a cruise ship pier at the fishing port side, and there are Yuhidai Lookout (夕陽台), Shiretoko National Campsite (知床国設野営場), Footbath "シリエトク (シリエトク)" and restaurants at the hill side. Utoro Gyokyo Fujinbu Shokudo (ウトロ漁協婦人部食堂), Banya (番屋), Namishibuki (波飛沫) and Araiso Ryori Kumanoya (荒磯料理 くまのや) are popular in particular. Because the hot-spring place is surrounded by nature, a deer or a bear are sometimes seen. When you take a walk in the early morning, Please be mindful of the bear.

In a summer and an autumn, Shiretoko Sightseeing Cruises and Nature Trekking can be enjoyed, and in a winter, Drift Ice Cruises, Drift Ice Walk and Snowshoes can be enjoyed. As for an event, Shiretoko Ryuhyo Festival (知床流氷フェス) is held in the winter. By the way, a nonstop bus, Eagle Liner (イーグルライナー), runs between Sapporo and Utoro.

Oronkoiwa Rock

Oronkoiwa Rock (オロンコ岩) is a huge rock with 60 m in height in Utoro, Shari town, Shiretoko Peninsula. There is the Oronkoiwa Rock near Utoro Port (ウトロ港), and there are Godzillaiwa Rock (ゴジラ岩) and Triangle Rock (三角岩) near the Utoro Port, too. There are a lot of huge rocks at this area. This Oronkoiwa Rock has a legend that mischievous tribe called Oronko people made this huge rock as a fort, they seem to play a trick on Ainu people in old days. The Ainu people that angried at the Oronko people seemed to punishment them with a structure trap by using an imitation of a whale. This story is a legend that is told in the Ainu people. But the Oronko people is an actual tribe. They live in Sakhalin, Russian now. This might be a true story. Admission free. A parking lot is free of charge. Article is here

Shiretoko Goko Lakes

Shiretoko Goko Lakes (知床五湖) in Shiretoko Peninsula (知床半島) are famous sightseeing spots that tourists can enjoy a scenery of 5 lakes surrounded by virgin forests, and are famous as an unexplored region. About 500,000 people visited here as a place that untouched nature can be enjoyed. It is closed in a winter. The tourists can look around the sightseeing spots from May to November. In the site, walking paths are roughly divided into 2 types of the walking paths, an elevated wooden path and a ground pathway, and there are 2 facilities, Shiretoko Goko Lakes Field House (知床五湖フィールドハウス) and Park Service Center (パークサービスセンター). Kamuiwakka Hot Falls

Kamuiwakka Hot Falls (カムイワッカ湯の滝) in Shiretoko Peninsula (知床半島) that has designed as the World Natural Heritage site are natural open-air baths that are few falls in Japan. Hot springs flow into Kamuiwakka River (カムイワッカ湯の滝) and hot falls flow, and waterfall basins are born. Now those are natural bathtubs. There are 4 waterfall basins in total, but tourists can only reach to the nearest basin, Ichi-no-Taki (一の滝), in danger of falling rocks now. Admission free. A parking lot is free of charge. Furepe Falls

Furepe Falls (フレペの滝) in Shari town, Shiretoko Peninsula (知床半島) are famous waterfalls that groundwater have flew out from cracks of steep cliffs with about 100 m in height and those are called "Tears of Young Girl (乙女の涙)". Because the flowing waterfalls looks sad, it is called so. A scenery is very good and it is a sightseeing spot that Utorozaki Lighthouse (ウトロ崎灯台) and the Sea of Okhotsk (オホーツク海) look very beautiful. Oshinkoshin Falls

Oshinkoshin Falls (オシンコシンの滝) are famous waterfalls in Shari town, Shiretoko Peninsula (知床半島). Because Charassenai River (チャラッセナイ川) dropping 80 m is divided into 2 ways, it is called "Forked Beautiful Waterfall (双美の滝」)". Water hits rocks and bubbles, and it is interesting in looking white. Because it is chosen as "100 Selections of Japanese Waterfalls", it is very powerful. Toursists get wet by spraya splash on a upper observatory deck, please be careful. There is a tourist attraction along the National Road Route 334, tourists are easy to drop in. There are a restroom and a stall in the site. Admission free. A parking lot is free of charge. Cape Puyuni

Cape Puyuni (プユニ岬は) pushes out into the Sea of Okhotsk. Tourists can look over Utoro Port (ウトロ港) from here and it is a viewing spot that Oronkoiwa Rock and Godzilla Rock are fitted to a picture. Many people come for a famous sunset location. A winter scenery that drift ice spread over the whole sea looks grand, too. Admission free. Article is here

Utoro Gyokyo Fujinbu Shokudo

Utoro Gyokyo Fujinbu Shokudo (ウトロ漁協婦人部食堂) is a popular restraunt at Utoro port, Shari town. There is a building on the foot of Godzilla-iwa Rock (ゴジラ岩) near Oronko-iwa rock (オロンコ岩). The restraunt has an atomosphere such as a typical port restraunt and is not so large. There are only counter seats. Article is here

Day Trip Onsen

Visitors can take a day trip bath at Yuhidai-no-Yu (夕陽台の湯), Shiretoko Grand Hotel "Kita-kobushi" (知床グランドホテル 北こぶし), Shiretoko Dai-Ichi Hotel (知床第一ホテル), Shiretoko Prince Hotel "Kaze-Namiki" (知床プリンスホテル 風なみ季), Kokuminshukusha Katsurada (国民宿舎 桂田), Hotel Shiretoko (ホテル知床), Shiretoko Village (しれとこ村) and Yuhinoataruie (夕陽のあたる家). On the other hand, accommodations without taking a day trip bath are Shiretoko Nobel Hotel (知床ノーブルホテル), Iruka Hotel (いるかホテル), Hotel kifuu Club Shireotko (ホテル季風クラブ 知床), Onsen Minsyuku Tanpopo (温泉民宿 たんぽぽ), Minssuku Shiretokoso (民宿 知床荘), Minssuku Ishiyama (民宿いしやま), Shiretoko Pekere (しれとこペレケ) and Bon's Home (ボンズホーム). In addition, there seems to be Akazawa Onsen Private Onsen, too.

Yuhidai-no-Yu

Yuhidai-no-Yu located on a hill is a public bath, and opens a business only in a summer from June to October. There is the Shiretoko National Campsite that is famous for enjoying the beautiful setting sun near a building. The visitors are almost campsite users, and the pabulic bath is crowded with them during summer vacation in particular. An entrance fee to the bath facility is JPY 500. There are a resting place and a coin laundry at the building.

A public bathhouse is not so large. There are 1 open-air bath surrounded by rocks and 1 indoor bath at the bathhouse. The each baths are the size that about 5 people can take a bath. Trees disturbed my view from the open-air bath, so unfortunately it was not good. I barely saw the Oronko rock and the sunset.

The hot springs are sodium chloride carbonated spring, and are clear and light yellow and have salty taste and no smell. A sum total of hot spring ingredients are 8.700 g/kg. When I took a bath in the hot springs, I felt smooth and slippery touch. As for the slippery touch, the indoor bath was stronger than the open-air bath. The hot springs seemed to be drinkable, but I could not find a drinking facility. Shampoos and body soaps are provided at the bathhouse. A restroom is installed at a dressing room.

Shiretoko Grand Hotel "Kita-kobushi"

Shiretoko Grand Hotel "Kita-kobushi" is a large-sized onsen hotel founded in 1960 near Utoro Port. Kita-kobushi group runs it. An open-air bath on the rooftop is popular for good view. An entrance fee to the bath facility is JPY 1000. West Hall has Outlook Large Public Bathhouse "Onunabara" (展望大浴場「大海原」) and Large Public Outdoor Bathhouse "Shion" (大浴場内露天スペース「汐音」) on the 8th floor, and has Sky Open-air Public Bath "Hoshi-no-Yu" (空中露天風呂「星の湯」) on the rooftop of the West Hall. The 8th floor is linked with the rooftop by a staircase, so bathers can go up and down without wearing clothes. In addition, a photography was prohibited at the bathhouse and a dressing room.

Shiretoko Dai-Ichi Hotel is a large-sized onsen hotel founded in 1971 on a hill. Dai-Ichi Hotel group runs it. An entrance fee to the bath facility is JPY 1250. The hotel is popular for large public bathhouses, Large Public Bathhouse "Mole" (大浴場モーレ) on the 1st floor and Large Public Bathhouse "Rocha" (大浴場ローシャ) on the 2nd floor. In addition, they lend 2 chartered baths for JPY 2160 per hour. Fresh free flowing hot springs are used at an outdoor bath and the chartered baths.

Shiretoko Prince Hotel "Kaze-Namiki"

Shiretoko Prince Hotel "Kaze-Namiki" is a large-sized onsen hotel founded in 1972 on a hill. Shiretoko Grand Hotel "Kita-Kobushi" runs this hotel. An entrance fee to the bath facility is JPY 1000. There is sex-segregated Large Public Bathhouses "Seiryu" (清流) on the 1st floor. An open-air bath surrounded by rocks is named Garden Open-air Public Bath "Hoshi-no-Shizuku" (庭園露天風呂「星の雫」), and fresh free flowing hot springs are used at that. The Large Bathhouses "Seiryu" for men or women are replaced everyday. In addition, a bedrock bath for women is provided.

Shiretoko Village

Shiretoko Village is a middle-sized onsen ryokan founded in 1985 on a hill, and is away from the center of Utoro Onsen. They have 4 buildings, Main Building, Annex Building, New Building and Large Public Bathhouse, and are well-known for enjoying 100% natural free flowing hot springs. An entrance fee to the bath facility is JPY 600. There is 1 indoor bath at the large public bathhouse named "Kuma-no-Yu" (大浴場「熊の湯」).

The hot springs are sodium chloride carbonated spring, and are slightly opaque and light Khaki color and have salty taste and metallic odor. The sum total of the hot spring ingredients are 8.970 g/kg. Shampoos and body soaps are provided at the bathhouse. A hair dryer is installed at a dressing room.

Shiretoko Yuhinoataruie

Shiretoko Yuhinoataruie (知床 夕陽のあたる家) is a small-sized onsen hotel run by Kitakobushi group on a hill. It used to be a youth hostel, and has an aged building beside Yuhidai Lookout and Shiretoko National Campsite, and is famous for enjoying the sun set over the Sea of Okhotsk from a public bathhouse or guest rooms. A staying is possible, too, and meals are served at Shiretoko Grand Hotel "Kitakobushi". An entrance fee to the bath facility is JPY 600.
