Shokanbetsu Teuri Yagishiri Quasi-National Park (暑寒別天売焼尻国定公園) that extends north and south is located in the northern part of Hokkaido along the Sea of Japan (日本海). Its total is 43,559 ha. The size is the 8th size in 57 quasi-national parks (not include national parks) in Japan. Shokanbetsu Teuri Yagishiri Quasi-National Park is roughly divided into 2 areas, SHokanbetsu Area (暑寒別エリア) and Teuri Yagishiri Area (天売焼尻エリア), and the SHokanbetsu Area has Shokanbetsudake Mountain Range (暑寒別岳連峰), Uryunuma-shitsugen Wetland (雨竜沼湿原) and seaside of Ofuyu (雄冬), Hamamasu (浜益) and Atsuta (厚田), and the Teuri Yagishiri Area has Teuri Island (天売島) and Yagishiri Island. (焼尻島) In the SHokanbetsu Area, points worthy of note are climbing Mt. Gunbetsudake (群別岳), Mt. Hamamasudake (浜益岳), Mt. Ofuyu (雄冬山), Mt. Minamishokanbetsudake (南暑寒岳) and the Uryunuma-shitsugen Wetland (雨竜沼湿原) and Shape cliffs of Ofuyu, Hamamasu and Atsuta. Teuri Island is a small island with about 12 km in circumference. Teuri Ferry Port is located in the northern part of the island, and local people live in the northern part of the island and in the eastern part of the island. There are accommodations such as ryokan in the northern part of the island and in the eastern part of the island, too. As for sightseeing of Teuri Island, superb views in the southern part of the island and bird-watching in the central part of the island are main tourist attractions. Guillemots (オロロン鳥), endangered species, and cerorhinca monocerata (ウトウ) are seen. Because a road in the western part of the island changes the one way road from June to August, toursits should see clockwise sights. There are Kusrosaki Beach (黒崎海岸), Akaiwa Obseravatory (赤岩展望台), Chidorigaura-enchi (千鳥ヶ浦園地) and Kannonzaki Observatory (観音崎展望台) as a famous scenic spot.

Nature and Tourist Attractions
Beautiful sceneries and breeding places for seabirds from the southern coast to the western coast of Teuri Island can be seen. Artifacts like floating on the sea are picturesque.
Akaiwa Observatory (赤岩展望台) is located on the south end of Teuri Island (天売島) and is famous as breeding grounds of Rhinoceros Auklet (ウトウ) and Common Murre (オロロン鳥). 800,000 Rhinoceros Auklets have digged myriads of holes around Akaiwa Lighthouse (赤岩灯台). A scenery is very strange, and tourists will get a mysterious impression. A visitor route is built on the site, and the visitors can observe the breeding grounds of Rhinoceros Auklet closely. The breeding season is from June through August. I was not able to watch the Rhinoceros Auklets when I came, but I watched a situation that a young Rhinoceros Auklet was eaten by a crow. I felt sad about that. There are a free parking lot and a restroom at the site. Admission free and the parking lot is free of charge. Article is here

A view from a parking lot is nice, and Yezo Lily flower along a path with about 100 m in length to the Seabird Observation Hut and the scenery with the blue sea is very nice, too. I am sure that this sea is very beautiful blue even if I compare the color of this sea with the sea of Shakotan (積丹) and the sea of Rebun Island and Rishiri Island (利尻礼文). A telescope that visitors can observe breeding grounds of seabirds freely is provided at the Seabird Observation Hut just like floating on the sea. The breeding season is from June through August. A local speciality of the Teuri Island is a sea urchin. Many sea urchins grow surely on quays of the port. Such as the live sea urchins can be eaten beside the Teuri Ferry Terminal.
Sea urchins for souvenirs are sold and live sea urchin can be eaten at a souvenir shop beside the Teuri Ferry Port. As for the price, an extra large sea urchin is JPY 500, and a large sea urchin is JPY 300, and a regular sea urchin is JPY 200. I ate the large sea urchin and the regular sea urchin. The edible part of the sea urchin are ovaries and testicles, and it was difficult to eat only sea urchins because those ovaries and testicles had sands, but my mouth was full of the taste of the sea.
