April 30th, 2015

Shikabe Onsen

Shikabe Onsen (鹿部温泉) is a hot spring town in Shikabe town located in the northeastern part of Hakodate city. 5 hot spring facilities are built around the center of the Shikabe along Hokkaido Road 43. Restaurants, cafes, convenience stores, Izakaya and bars with a surcharge are built, too, and it is good location. There is Intermittent Spring Park (間欠泉公園) near there, and tourists can enjoy an intermittent spring. In addition, Lake Onuma is relatively near.

It is the origin of the Shikabe Onsen that Mr. Gengoro Ito (伊藤源五郎) saw a damaged deer at a spring pond, and built an onsen hut in 1666. It is very historical onsen in Hokkaido. Water temperature of hot spring sources from 50 C to 90 C are very high, and a type of the hot springs is almost sodium chloride spring spring, so it may be said that it is typical hot spring. Speaking of the Shikabe, seafood such as cod roe or kelp is famous. Shikabe Tarako Festival (鹿部たらこ祭り) is held in late February, Shikabe Ebi and Tusbu Spring Festibval (鹿部春のえびつぶ祭り) is held in late May, Shikabe Sea and Onsen Festival (しかべ海といでゆのまつり) is held in late August, and Shikabe Sukeso Festival (『しかべのスケソだよ!』フェスタ!!) is held in early December.

Intermittent Spring Park

Intermittent Spring Park is one of the 3 major intermittent springs in Hokkaido together with Rausu and Noboribetsu. Hot springs of 100 C gush forth to an altitude of about 15 m every 10 minutes. Tourists can take a footbath using the intermittent spring. But visitors must pay an admission fee to observe the intermittent spring.

Onuma Quasi-National Park

Onuma Quasi-National Park (大沼国定公園) has area of 9,083 ha on the foot of Mt. Komagatake (駒ヶ岳) and is composed of Lake Ounma (大沼湖), Lake Konuma (小沼湖), Junsai Swamp (蓴菜沼) and Mt. Komagatake, an active volcano with 1,131 m in height. When Mt. Komagatake erupted from 50,000 to 30,000 years ago, a river was dammed by flowing mud flood, and these wetlands were born. The wetlands have been designed as the Ramsar Convention wetland, wild waterfowls such as Goose and Duck rest their wings on the surface of the lake. Article is here

List of Day Trip Onsen

Visitors can take a day trip bath at Onsen Ryokan Shika-no-Yu (温泉旅館 鹿の湯), Onsen Ryokan Kichi-no-Yu (温泉旅館 吉の湯), Onsen Ryokan Konishi (温泉旅館 こにし) and Kame-no-Yu (亀の湯). On the other hand, an accommodation without taking a day trip bath is Shikabe Royal Hotel (鹿部ロイヤルホテル) and Ryokan Kurashiki (旅館倉敷).

Onsen Ryokan Shika-no-Yu

Onsen Ryokan Shika-no-Yu is a small-sized long-established onsen ryokan with 10 guest rooms along Hokkaido Road 43 nearby Shikabe Fishing Port, and has opened a business since 1918, and owns 3 hot spring sources. Water temperature of the hot spring sources is very high, so a heat exchanger lower the water temperature. The appearance and the interior decoration are like a high-class Japanese-style restaurant. A public bathhouse was renewed in 2017. An entrance fee to the bath facility is JPY 500. A staying is possible, too.

There are 1 open-air bath and 1 indoor bath at the bathhouse. The tiled bathhouse is not so large, but the sunny bathhouse with a lot of windows is feeling good.

Large rocks catch bather's eyes first. The hot springs gush out from the rocks, and a lot of the hot springs overflow from the bath in succession. I think that the bathers never get tired of a view. The hot springs ingredients have precipitated on the rocks. The indoor bath is the size that about 10 people can take a bath.

The open-air bath surrounded by rocks looks like a pond of Japanese-style garden, and is the size that about 4 people can take a bath, and uses natural free flowing hot springs with adding water. The open-air bath is hotter than the indoor bath. Blind fencess obstructed the bather's view, so a view is not good. But a roof is not provided, and a sense of opneness can be felt. The open-air bath has a faucet for cold water, so it is allowed to add the water for lowering the water temperature.
