Fish Designated as National Monument Range Inhabit at Panke SWamp with Reddish Brown Water -Pankenuma-enchi in Horonobe-
October 24th, 2015
Pankenuma Swamp (パンケ沼) is a brackish swamp in the northern part of Shimosarobetsu-genya (下サロベツ原野) located in the southern part of Sarobetsu Plain, Rishiri‐Rebun‐Sarobetsu National Park (利尻礼文サロベツ国立公園). The perimeter of the swamp is about 8 km and is the relatively large swamp. Because iron of the peat bed permeated water and was oxidized, color of the water changed reddish brown. Common Gold Fishes, Comet Goldfish and Corbicula inhabit there. Because the Comet Goldfish in the Uotorinuma Swamp, Miyagi prefecture has been designated as the National Monument, rare fishes seem to inhabit, too. The area around Pankenuma Swamp is called Pankenuma-enchi (パンケ沼園地), tourists can go around there along wooden paths for about 20 minutes. There are a gazebo, a bird watching hut and a restroom at the site.
When I read Tweets, Pankenuma-enchi seems to be popular.
pic.twitter.com/OOqiTDfJYn— YURA (@yuragawa) 2015年10月7日
There are 3 viewing platforms along wooden paths, and hygrophytes or wild birds can be observed from June to September. The wild birds such as Yellow-Breasted Bunting, Siberian Rubythroat, Latham's Snipe and Grey Heron and flowers such as Yezo Lily and Iris Ensata are often seen.
