Beautiful Viewing Spot That Is Representative Flower Island -Momoiwa Observatory in Rishiri Island-
October 18th, 2015
Momoiwa Observatory (桃岩展望台) is located in the southwestern part of Rebun Island (礼文島). Tourists must go up a hill from Kafuka Port (香深港) to Momoiwa Observatory and will considerably have a hard time on foots or by bicycles. I was dead tired. But coming back was a breeze. There is Momoiwa Observatory on the hill at 228 m above sea level, and the tourists can enjoy 360-degree view. Momoiwa Rock (桃岩 * Momo means a peach in Japanese and iwa means a rock in Japanese) like the shape of a peach is in front of their eyes, Nekoiwa Rock (猫岩 * Neko means a cat in Japanese language) like the shape of a cat back in the sea and Rishiri Island (利尻島) can be seen. Admission free. A parking lot is free of charge.
Momoiwa walking path (桃岩遊歩道 * about 2.5 km in length) from the Momoiwa Observatory to Motochi Lighthouse (元地トダイ) is called the another name "Rebun Flower Road (礼文フラワーロード)". Plants are different in different environmental such as a grassy plain and a rocky place, tourists can see 300 kinds of flowers along the walking path. The flowers are in full bloom from July to August. By the way, there are no facilities except a parking lot and a restroom.
