Only Zoo Has Elephant in Hokkaido -Obihiro Zoo-

Obihiro Zoo

Obihiro Zoo (帯広動物園) is the second oldest zoo after Maruyama Zoo (円山動物園) in Hokkaido and was opened in 1963. It is known as a zoo that was established a method to breed tropical animals in cold Hokkaido for the first time in Japan. About 73 kinds of 400 animals are bred at the Obihiro Zoo. In addition, there is an amusement park at the zoo, and Mini Steam Locomotion Benkeigo (弁慶号) goes around the amusement park. Strollers and wheelchairs are provided, too, and those are free rental.

Around Birds House

Small birds such as Fantail Pigeon, Japanese Hawfinch, European Greenfinch and Brown-eared Bulbul are bred at the Birds House (鳥類舎). Blue Peacock, Fantail Pigeon, Mandarin Duck, Pelican and Flamingo are bred around the Birds House. The Fantail Pigeon is a domestic animal that a domestic pigeon was improved ornamental and is bred in groups. A figure with opening their wings resembled Indian Peacock, and it was named so. Originally they inhabit in the India. White appearance looks beautiful. 3 Blue Peacocks, 1 male and 2 famales, are bred at the Blue Peacock House. Originally they inhabit in the India. An individual seems to live for 20 years. It is famous for having beautiful male decoration wings. The male that opens its wings is only courtship. It has most courtship from May to June.

2 Pelicans, mated pair, are bred at the Pelican House. They originally live in the North Africa, the Southeastern Africa and the Asia. 3 kinds of Flamingos, Phoenicopterus Ruber, European Flamingo and Chilean Flamingo are bred at the Flamingo House. They originally inhabit in the West Asia, the Africa, the South America. The Chilean Flamingo is in danger of dying out.

Indian Elephant House

Indian Elephant is a representative animal of the Obihiro Zoo and is only one Elephant in Hokkaido. Her name is Nana. They inhabit in the South India originally and are in danger of extinction. She came to the Obihiro Zoo in 1964. Because half a century passes soon, I am amazed by long time. An individual seems to live for 80 years.

Somali Giraffe and Chapman's Zebra House

3 Somali Giraffe and 1 Chapman's Zebra are bred at Somali Giraffe and Chapman's Zebra House (アミメキリンとチャップマンシマウマ舎). As for names of the Somali Giraffe, male is Musashi and female is Ribbon. A child was born recently. They are in danger of extinction, and this is glad news. They inhabit in the Africa originally. The name of the Chapman's Zebra is Chantilly. They inhabit in the South Africa originally. Their skin is not a striped pattern if hair of the Zebra is shaved. Colors of the hair itself are the striped pattern.
