December 4th, 2015

Obihiro Onsen

Obihiro Onsen (帯広温泉) is a hot spring place in Obihiro city in the eastern part of Hokkaido. Some hot spring facilities for day trip onsen are built in residential areas that about 170,000 people live in, and is popular for enjoying moor hot spring. Speaking of Tokachi, I imagine brown hot springs after all. Obihiro is a unique city in Hokkaido, and has many rare charms, for example tourist attractions such as Obihiro Banei Horse Racing that is an only horse racing in the world and nature that spreads over Tokachi plain, sweets such as Ryugetsu and Rokkatei, tasty foods such as pork rice bowl and chinese chirashi, onsen such as moor hot springs that are brown hot springs. Obihiro is one of the most popular tourist resorts. That makes sense.

The moor spring is brown spring that gushes out from a peat bed or a lignitic bed, and contains a lot of organics of plant origin, so it has slippery touch, and is good for a skin, and is called beauty hot spring (美人の湯), too. The moor spring is different from usual types of the hot springs, and the hot springs are recognized as the moor spring if those contain humus.

OBIHIRO

Obihiro that 170,000 people live is the sixth largest city in Hokkaido and is a regional hub city of the Eastern Hokkaido area. It has flourished as the center of the Tokachi district. As for climate, it is hot that temperature rises to nearly 30 degrees in a summer, and it is cold that temperature falls to nearly -20 degrees in a winter. It features that the temperature difference is extreme and there is little snow in Hokkaido. Therefore skating is prosperous in the winter. Mr. Hiroyasu Shimizu, Olympic Gold Medalist, come from Obihiro city, there is much competition population of the skating. Article is here

The hot springs seemed to be drinkable, and it was mellow taste. Indications of drinking is unknown, but it has an atmosphere such as good effect for something.

Yayoi-no-Yu Onsen

Yayoi-no-Yu Onsen is a hot spring facility for day trip onsen near Hakurindai Park (柏林台公園). A building has been renewed since 2011, so it is new. When I visited here, I saw that it is very popular to be crowded with local people. A restraunt is at the building, too. An entrance fee to the bath facility is JPY 440. It is said that this hot spring is not the moor spring in the Obihiro for a change. By the way, a photography is prohibited at the bathroom and the dressing room. Bad luck!

  1. good! hokkaido! says:

    Hi, Ian Lockett san,

    Welcome to Hokkaido!
Nearest Onsen for a day use is Tokachi Gardens Hotel so far as I know.
    https://good-hokkaido.info/en/obihiro-onsen/#Tokachi_Gardens_Hotel

Unfortunately, other hotspring facilities (Sento: public bath) are a little far on foot.

    Have a nice trip!

  2. Ian Lockett says:

Can you please tell me which onsens are easy to walk to from APA Hotel Obihiro Ekimae. My wife and I will be staying there 9th February 2017.

    Thankyou
