Rare Atmosphere and Rare Types of Hot Springs in Hokkaido -Meakan Onsen in Ashoro-

August 31st, 2014

Meakan Onsen

Meakan Onsen (雌阿寒温泉) is a hot-spring place in Ashoro town located in the northwestern part of Kushiro city. Only 3 buildings, Nonaka Onsen (野中温泉), Nonaka Onsen Annex (野中温泉別館) and Kiefuku (景福), stand around an entrance of Lake Onneto (オンネトー). Because there is a trailhead to Mt. Meakandake (雌阿寒岳), a lot of mountain climbers come. The Lake Onneto, mountain climbing to Mt. Meakandake and rare type of hot springs are popular highlights.

Yama-no-Yado Nonaka Onsen Annex

Nonaka Onsen is a long-established hot spring ryokan and has opened a business since 1914. They have a main building, former youth hostel, and an annex. A building of the annex is larger than the main building, and visitors can stay only at the annex currently. It is well-known that World's Oldest Man Mr. Shozo Nonaka (野中正造), the second-generation president, lives, too. It could probably say long living hot springs because he says "thanks to Onsen, I live long". High quality hot springs have a good reputation for onsen experts, too.

There are 1 indoor bath that about 10 people can take a bath and 1 open-air bath that about 4 people can take a bath at a bathroom. The bathroom is not so large, and its walls, floor and bathtub are made of woods, so those remind me of historical onsen in Honshu. In addition, the floor is slippery. Showers and faucets are not provided, so please wash your body with pouring hot water on yourself with a pail before entering the bathtub. The hot springs are fresh free flowing, and its yielding is large, so bathers can enjoy the overflowing hot springs. But, Do not take a long bath to prevent from hydrogen sulfide toxication at the bathroom.

The outdoor baths are different in men and women. I know only the outdoor bath for men. That is surrounded by rocks and has not a roof. I think that the bathers can feel a sense of openness.

The hot springs are sulfur and calcium and sodium chloride sulfate spring, and are milky white and have harsh taste and hydrogen sulfide odor. The sum total of the hot spring ingredients are 4.022 g. The hot springs are drinkable, and a drinking hot spring facility is provided. It tasted the harsh taste like a medicine when I drinked it. It seems to be effective for Chronic digestive diseases, Chronic constipation, Diabetes, Gout, Chronic gallbladder flame, Cholelithiasis, Obesity disease. Shampoos and body soaps are not provided at the bathroom. Because a restroom is not installed at a dressing room, you should get a wash beforehand at the restroom along a corridor. A staying is possible, too.

[Closing]Onneto Onsen Keifuku

Onneto Onsen Keifuku is closing a business now. This is an article before closing.

Keifuku is a hot-spring ryokan that opens only in a summer. A staying is possible, and a lot of mountain climbers come. There are 2 bathhouses, and there is 1 indoor bath at the bathhouse and is 1 open-air bath at another bathhouse, bathhouses are away from each. Bathers must move from the bathhouse to the bathhouse in their clothes.

Appearance of Building

At first about indoor bath, At the bathhouse, both walls and a floor are made of trees and it has a rare atmosphere in Hokkaido. The indoor bath is the size that approximately 3 people take a bath. It is not large generally including the bathhouse. A bathtub is made of rocks, and gravels are spread over the bottom of the bathtub, and fresh hot springs are gushing out from the bottom. The bathtub connected directly with the hot spring source is very rare bathtub in Japane. In addition, the clear hot springs in the bathtub looking like a pond is very beautiful.

The hot springs are sulfur and magnesium and calcium and sodium chloride sulfate spring, and are clear and colorless and have bitter taste and a little sulfur smell. The sum total of the hot spring ingredients are 3.798 g. It has 1,365 g of ion sulfate. It was taste such as a medicine when I drank the hot springs that gushed out from a pipe with my hands. However, the bathers must not drink the hot springs very much because much sulfur seems to dissolve their stomaches.

Color of Floor Board Changes by Hot Spring Ingredients

Successively about open-air bath, a bathtub is surrounded by rocks, and it is the size that approximately 10 people take a bath. It was a large mixed bathing open-air bath in old days, but the bathtubs for men and women are divided with a partition now. Because there is not an obstruction in my view other than this partition, I can enjoy a senery of openness very much. The hot springs are sulfur and magnesium and calcium and sodium chloride sulfate spring, and are opaque and emerald green and have bitter taste and a little sulfur smell. Each type of the hot springs was the same, but I was surprised at the difference of color. When the hot springs are oxidized on contact with an air, it seems to change into such a color. Besides, rocks changed into white by the hot spring ingredients. A large quantity of the hot springs flowed to an outlet. I enjoyed the free-flowing hot springs. In addition, because there are no shower or bath amenities such as a shampoo, the bathers must take a bath after pouring the hot springs on their body with a water tub and rinse off their surface dirt and sweat. Because there are not restrooms at the dressing rooms, you should get a wash beforehand at the restroom at a corridor.
