[Lake Kanayama in Minamifurano] Man-made Lake Has Rich Nature and Facilities

Lake Kanayama

Lake Kanayama (かなやま湖) is a man-made lake in Minamifurano town located in the southern part of Furano city. Kanayama Dam was built in 1967, and the lake was born. It stretches east-west along Hokkaido Road 465, and the watere surface area is 9.2 km2, and the lake is the Japan's 8th largest dam lake. The kanayama Dam is the only concrete hollow gravity dam with about 57 m in height in Hokkaido, and was chosen as "100 Best Dam Lake in Japan", too. Kanayamako Lookout (かなやま湖展望台) and Kanayanamako Forest Park (かなやま湖森林公園) are around the lake, and 740,000 toursits visit here. Kanayamako Lake Water Festival is held on the last Saturday and Sunday of July. Admission free. A parking lot is free of charge.

The center of the Minamifurano is at east part of the lake, and restraunts, cafes, and convenience stores are built there. Hoshino Resort (星野リゾート), Rokugo Forest (麓郷の森), Akaiwa Seigan-kyo (赤岩青巌峡) and Yunosawa Onsen (湯の沢温泉) are relatively near here, too. By the way, speaking of the tasty restraunts in the Minamifurano, Kanayamako Log Hotel Larch (かなやま湖ログホテルラーチ), Farm & Cafe Berries and Fortun Bagels (フォーチュンベーグルズ) are popular in particular.

Tomamu Unkai Terrace

Hoshino Resort Unkai Terrace (星野リゾート 雲海テラス) is a popular sightseeing spot in Tomamu, Shimukappu village located in the northwestern part of Obihiro city and is famous as a resort that tourists can enjoy a golf in a summer, a ski and a snowboarding in a winter. In 2005, they started the unkai terrace that utilized a ski-lift in a summer, it became a popular tourist attraction in an instant. Yunosawa Onsen

Yunosawa Onsen (湯ノ沢温泉) is a hot spring place in Shimukappu village located between Sapporo city and Obihiro city. Only Mori-no-Shiki (森の四季) is built near Furano National Route (National Route 237) at aroud 400 m above sea level in a mountain. The distance is around 10 km far away from the center of the Shimukappu, and restraunts, cafes, souvenir shops and convenience stores are not built. Speaking of the Shimukappu, Hoshino Resort Tomamu is famous, and a ski resort, a sea of clouds and Ice Village are popular. In the Shimukappu, various activities are served, and a rafting trip, rock-climbing and hiking can be enjoyed from summer to autumn, and ski, snowboard and snowshoes can be enjoyed in a winter. Yezo Spruce and Sakhalin Fir grow thick around the lake, clear lake water is very calm. There are Kanayamako Rest Center (かなやま湖保養センター), Kanayamakohan Campsite (かなやま湖畔キャンプ場), Kanayamako Auto Campsite (かなやま湖オートキャンプ場), a go-cart course, bungalows, Log House Village, Kanayamakohan Tennis Court (かなやま湖畔テニスコート), a lavender garden, Shikanosawagawa-joryu Park (鹿の沢川上流公園) and Kanayama Fureai Hiroba Park Golf Course (金山ふれあい広場パークゴルフ場) on the lakeside, and leisure facilities are rich, too.

The lake has rich nature, and Itou fish called a phantom fish, Dolly Varden, Rainbow Trout and Smelt Pond inhabit the lake. Hokkaido Newspaper introduced that the Itou of 116 cm in height was catched in 1992. In a summer, fresh green, lavenders and hunting stag beetle or Japanese horned beetle can be enjoyed, Fall foliage can be enjoyed in an autumn, snow views and fishing smelt pond can be enjoyed in a winter, and canoe, the go-cart, fishing and sports can be enjoyed from a spring to the autumn. The lavender fields on the lakeside is the only lavender fields facing the lake in the Furano region, and are in full bloom in July.
